A friend is trying to decide which city to spend her birthday in, and the essential ingredient for the night is some late 80's glam:banana: :headbang:

It'll be a saturday night in the middle of May, so shall I tell her Sheffield is a good place to be, or can anybody recommend anything better?

80s glam? Sheffield has a very good scene for that kind of thing afaik, not sure if the 80s bars on West St and Leopold St are still open though.

I love Razor Stiletto, but it plays about 2 or 3 80s glam rock tracks if you're lucky.

I'd stick with Corporation (starting off maybe in The Moorfoot or Nelson) as the biggest room is host to mostly 70s and 80s rock. Plenty glam (esp the first couple ofn hours) You can expect to hear Poison, Cinderella, GNR, Skidrow, Ratt etc etc.

Alternatively - Nottingham Rock City is fantastic on a saturday, and it also has a classic rock room.

Glam rock, you say ?
Well, I'm not aware of any places in Sheffield that solely do this type of music... esp on a Sat night.

However, I did went to see a glam rock tribute band in Moathouse Hotel before for a colleague's hen night ! It was quite cool, actually. ;) I would try and ring around hotels and things to see if they do any kind of nights like that, if your mate is interested.

Btw, you can always see listings of events in the Guardian on a weekend. It definitely covers Sheffield. As well as the Sheffield Telegraph. Other than that, if it's a large group of people, I'd probably try and find a DJ that plays this type of music and hire a private function room.

Thanks for the offer Bago :)

Was it actually a 70's glam band though? I've never come across a tribute band for an 80's rock band (well, I suppose ther must be a Guns n' Roses one somewhere, and Queen were about through both decades)

I've just started putting on bands at the Moorfoot, so to hear the pre recorded stuff means waiting for intervals for me to stick the glam stuff on. You might enjoy listening to Blitz on 25th March, they play all the good old sing along rock, not really glam but you'll know all the tunes.

I'll ask her if she fancies changing her birthdate by deedpoll then ;)
Sounds like a good night!

You may know it better as hair metal - spandex, big hair, silk scarfs - posion, motley crue etc etc - it was massive in sheffield in the mid/late 80s where Roxys would pull in 2000 people on a monday night to its monthly rock night.

Lets Rock!

Oh dear, this is where I'm poo at music trivia.

Well, if I recall, the band had black hair, sparkling spandex, painted white faces, heavy eye make-ups and sang songs like 'Spirits in the Sky' ?? (Wasn't that an 80's song ? Even I remember that on TOTP. lol. ) I've no idea whether they're meant to be a 70s band or an 80s one. But it was a fun night cos all the ladies (i.e. female managers/secretaries etc) was oggling at the singers, and almost stripping as well ! :D

No doubt about it try the Corporation on Saturday night -Res Rox big room, not biased but I do the night, it can vary from genre to genre, but by far and away the most popular stuff we play is Glam,Sleaze, Hard Rock - Motley Crue, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, Pretty Boy Flloyd, GnR, Cinderella, Tigertailz, Quireboys, Skid Row, Hanoi Rocks, Aerosmith etc etc etc. Genrally a good laugh and the booze is good too. Tell your mate we also have poles on the stage so if she's feeling particularly flexible, she can have a go. Best Regards.

Lol, marvellous!!!

Don't suppose there's any chance of getting some Rancid played on a Saturday is there?? (or would Friday be the required night for that??!!):) - actually, seeing as there's probably only me that would get up and dance to it, scratch that!!(I've seen it happen at Corp before where only one person likes something enough to dance - it made me cringe just watching it, especially when the song got pulled halfway through!!:P )

I play all this music down at the Moorfoot in between the band playing. Cheap tickets also on sale for the Corp too, so call in before heading up there!

We are trying to add a little more variety on Saturday nights - not at all getting rid of the 80's/70's rock but also adding newer and more alternative stuff like, FNM, RHCP, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Greenday etc - Stuff that whilst not cutting edge has the relevance to a general rock night. But regarding Rancid - Friday night not a problem at all getting it played, Saturday might be a little harder - but ask me and we can see whose down and if the times right - you never know (likely to be Timb Bomb though).

Cheers:headbang:

Cool, thanks - Time Bomb would do nicely!!

Trying to change Reservoir Rocks somewhat has been mooted for a good few years hasn't it (even going back to when I worked there!!), but it's never really happened (must be all those old glam rockers stuck in their ways!!:P ), but good luck at trying to get some more 'general' stuff played too!:headbang:

I know Res Rocks is always busy and you're pretty much guaranteed a great night out because everyone knows what is gonna be played and there is something to be said for 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' BUT I think it's the only room/club night there that never really has/ has had any variety. Penny to a pound the playlist is pretty much the same as the last time I went, which is almost four years ago now.

Surely there has to come a point where they HAVE to start introducing some new songs (if only for the DJ's sanity!!;) :P ) as all the other rooms constantly evolve with what's popular now as well as choosing from a selection of past good stuff - why does Reservoir Rocks 'have' to stay stuck in it's own little niche (not that it's a particularly bad niche - I love Res Rocks, always have done, always will do) but surely a few different tunes will only make it better!!??:D

Yeah they should play different songs, but still by the older glam/metal/classic rock bands. That's what people go for.

It's the 17th June. Def Leppard are playing the arena that night, so will town be a bit quiet at these venues?

What bands are on elsewhere?

Does anybody recommend the route we should crawl through town?

BIG HAIR!!!! OH that was classic! You could get knocked out by BIG hair styles on the bus to town on Saturday nights....For some reason this fashion seemed to die out in the early 90's........BRING BACK BIG HAIR!!!

Strix
31-05-2006, 12:38
It probably died out due to all the back-combing causing hair loss ;)

Aw, come on! I cannot believe that Buffy is the only one in Sheffield playing Rock on a Saturday night!!!

Where else should we go?

Is anybody else on here NOT going to Def Leppard tonight?
