I used to live at Duchess Road School. The back entrance was opposite the old Drill Hall. My grandmother used to wait on in the officers mess there years ago.

My goodness! Edmund Road Drill Hall is a place I’d almost forgotten about. I think it would be around 1938-39 when I went there with my father to see my first pro boxing match. The main event was a middleweight contest between ‘Ginger’ Sadd — then an area champion — and his challenger Ernie “Butcher’ Gasgoigne (spelling may be wrong). Sadd won, I believe on points.
Looking back, they were both probably at the end of their fighting career and Ernie — a Rotherham man who I believe worked at Steel, Peach and Tozer’s — was definitely a bit on the fat side. Good fight though!

Edmund Rd drill hall used to have the chrysanthemum show evey year, a fantastic event. Why do let events like that die out?

My first experience of the Drill Hall would be about 1947 when my dad took me a TA 'open day' - lots of impressive equipment for a young lad to mess around on :D

In later years I remember lots of 'shows' there, - cats, dogs, flowers, budgies...even meeces and rabbits. Pretty sure they're still held there, - well dog shows anyway.

Jauntyone - unfortunately my grandmother is now dead but she was 92 when she died. I don't think the same sergeant would hve been there then!

thanks egglou for answering my thread, I to used too work in the offices mess with joe glover on many a officers function, they were really good and I always managed to get a good drink while working lol, was good grounding for me as I went on to work behind a bar for many years.

I do remember Stewart Glover, he was a very nice chap. At one camp he was the driver of the 3tonner what we went to tenby on.

The night before we were going back to sheffield all drivers were told not go to go out, but stewart went with us on the night, naught I know, we had a good night out, stewart was drinking god knows what. we stayed up that night to look after him. The next morning he drove a three ton truck back to sheffield. It was a hairy ride for us all that day...

We all enjoyed the camp at Tenby though. I remember Paul O' Leary, as far as I can remember he was a very tall guy and a brilliant sense of humour, ask him if he remembers going to the camp inLeak, Staffordshire, when there was a confrontation with some of the local youths, what a night.

If you get chance ask your uncle or Stewart if he remembers me, my name is Private Jim Garbutt.

Hi gingercat1

I was in the army cadet force around the same time as yourself, 271 field artillery at edmund road. I was private Garbutt, I went on to be corpral.
I went on a lot of weekend camps like the ones at Strensil, they were really great.
I remember a really good friend of mine was a lad called Lambert, he went on to be Sargent.

After the cadets I went on to join the TA's, we went to the big L7o's, anti aircraft guns, firing range at Manobeer,(think thats how they spell it), had some really good time there. The last camp I went on was in South Wales, Tenby,.

I had a brill job toward the end of my service, I worked in the offices mess, waiting table and working the bar at the big functions, good times.

Hope to here from you gingercat1

Its Manorbier.
I think, but I could be wrong, that when I was in the Sea Cadets we used to shoot at ERDH, or maybe we just did band practice there, I cant remember, in any case I remember going to several shows there, both Sheffield Show and Ideal Home exhibition.

So Floridablade, will you be telling us the secret of how to cut string without a knife, or is this some military technique only ever to be revealed by big jolly sergeants to their underlings.

Does any one remember Sgt jealous? he used to run the dances and other functions at the drill hall, a most excellent chap, he was a long distance lorry driver by trade and on drill nights and week-end camps could be relied upon to provide cheap fags and booze, from whence they came i no not where, but he did go to london docks quite alot.
I spent quite alot of time at the drill hall ( i lived on Edmund rd ) played in there as a child and years later joined 271 Lt A D regt RA.
Had my first driving in a 10 ton matador there, but thats another tale for another time.

Sorry magneteer,a long lost art,I was and still am a complete shambles when it comes to party tricks, but it entails wrapping the string around your hands in such a way that with a sharp pull the string cuts itself. All I ever managed to do is cut my hands.

No 3 div. went to Suez from Colchester,Essex,I sailed on an old tramp steamer from Barry docks in S. Wales, the stevedors stole most of the stuff off the ship before we sailed but we didn't know it until we unloaded what was left. Every single wireless battery was missing, every kitbag had been emptied onto the decks and the civvy stuff stolen.

Were you with 3 div at colchester?
My brother was a sergeant in 3 div there, he was demobbed in 1955 after five years. Most of the time the Div was in Egypt.

I,m picking up this thread after 6 years or so, but I remember Edmund Road Drill Hall well, from my young days.
My dad had a dance band and played there every weekend 1940s' and into the 1950s';. If mum and dad couldnt get a sitter I would be taken there and played under the stage .

Anyone any recollections of Dances in this era?

I remember, must have been in the late 1940s going to the drill hall with my school, and their were other local schools there as well to see the late and great Sir Stanley Matthews who showcased his skills and I remember he dribbled a ball past about 6 or 8 kids like a knife through butter, at a guess I would have been about 9 or ten years old.

I was in the ACF there in the early fifties, I can remember firing on the shooting range they had in there.
We used .202 rifles that were set in .303 stocks to get the feel..

I remember late 40s' early 50s', when you entered the Drill Hall, on the left was the Bar, and to the right in the back corner was a Sleigh , probably used in Winter to pull a horse with a Father Xmas.

Anyone remember the Sleigh?

Bullerboy,

Seem to think somewhere down the line Forest Marshman was a relative. Think he may have lived Grindleford . Correct me if I'm wrong. I seem to recall my mum and dad George and Peggy Marshman meeting up with Forest Marshman maybe 50/60's . Didnt he have a motor accessory shop?
Also believe a Marshman was the headmaster of City Grammer School , maybe 1930/40's . May have the dates wrong but someone may correct that one also?

I vaguely recall that Zephyr convertible, since they were a rare item in the 70s' when I ran a TR6. I had last of the Mk2 Saloons 1965 to 1968, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cant say I came across Forest Marshman on the Motor Club circuit. I was a member of North Midland Motor Club in the 60s' , with meetings at the Old Hall, Hope. Being on the commitee , my forte was organising driving tests .
Although a poor member, I did compete in Sprints and Hill climbs in a supercharged Mini, but didnt come across Forest. Do you know which club he was in ?

Anyone know if their are any archive records relating to the hall ?

I am particularly interested in the showing of Chrysanthemums ( is that spelt correctly ? ) prior to the war.
