The Sheffield & District league has tried to prevent its clubs from communicating with the local paper until it agrees not to publish any results in which the score exceeds 14 goals.

What a pathetic attempt by the Sheffield & District league to protect their own backs. If there are teams in the league who are losing by as many as 29 goals then the teams are so obviously mis-matched. Attempting to gag the press to cover up their imcompetance is just not on.
A total farce! It's so disheartening for the kids that lost, but the organisers really are to blame as pointed out. Maybe the losers were a newly formed team?
The farce is not the attempt to not publish, but the fact that football allows one sided matches to happen.
I coach, and referee mini and junior rugby, and the RFU have a clear guideline that a game is to be shortened if one team is clearly being outplayed. The whole point of kids playing sport is enjoyment and being thrashed is not helping anyone.
I have been at clubs who clearly don't understand this concept - for them, the win is everything, but fortunately most rugby clubs seem to understand what fun means.

Do you think it will catch on. I can see Sheffield Wednesday doing the same next season if they don't improve.
ps, I'm not a United fan.
And it wont work
Any team losing by 14 something will henceforth always be asked "What was the real score? What did you really lose by?"
And will the goalkeeper feel any better?
How much better is it only to let 14 in instead of 30?
No better at all
They should make sure kids teams are well-matched. If Arsenal played Stocksbridge, they might beat them 25 nil.
All that would demonstrate would be the stupidity of the league.
