View Full Version : Any decent restaurants?
alwanbap 30-03-2004, 17:53 Hi folks, just moving to Sheffield next week and love good food of any type! Any must do's you know of? It would be greatly appreciated
Above all I like a good Italian or a good vilage pub/bistro type.
Many thanks!
Whereabouts in Sheff are you moving to? In Hillsborough there's 2 really good Italians, there's La Dolce Vita on Bradfield Road next to the petrol station and the La Vida Loca at Hillsborough corner opposite HSBC bank.
There's another one in Hillsborough as well, on Middlewood road above the Co-Op, excellent that one.
JonHarrison 01-04-2004, 12:20 Again, near the Hillsborough area, on South Road, Walkley, Vito's. An excellent reputation.
evildrneil 01-04-2004, 12:27 The Canton Orchard out on Fulwood Road does the most wonderfull Chinese Food :)
alwanbap 01-04-2004, 13:07 Cheers, keep 'em coming!
Also in Hillsborough there's Mr Tse's for chinese, next door to the Deep End pub (the former Hillsborough baths), I can recommend their "All you can eat" offer, it's cheap and if you like chinese grub, a bargain!
Dionysus 01-04-2004, 14:06 Would highly recommend any of these:
Marias (Crookes) - Italian/New Cuisine
Excelsier(Hillsborough) - Chineese
Bahn Nah Thai Restaurant - Broomhill
Have been to all and been very impressed.
magicgem 01-04-2004, 15:29 I went to maria last night yum yum yum yum! You can also take your own wine too!
I recently went to the new Japenese restaurant called WasabiSabi on London Road. Had the teppanyaki menu which was lovely and entertaining at the same time. Would definately recommend
alwanbap 01-04-2004, 15:48 Hi, Rich, only just secured a place to stay! Someone said there are some good places on London Rd too?
Many thanks, my mouth's already watering!
*Twinkle* 01-04-2004, 15:50 BB's - devonshire green area.... Mmmm lovely food, nice waiters and brill prices... You have to go!
Yeah there's several places down on London Road, mostly Asian grub, like Indian and Chinese although there is a couple of Pizza places.
Chinese food - try Candy Town on london Road (opposite Bed Nightclub) Especially there duck pancakes - as they strip a duck in front of you in 10 seconds flat!
Also zing Vaa on the moor is also good, tiny but family run with good atmosphere
Itailian - Barbarellas at the end of London road (Near Candytown)- Nice layout, great food (especially the bacon pasta) starter
- Ka Pasa at the Top of west street - Family run business, very busy so book in advance, there carbonara spag rocks!
Best of the rest -
Noodle bar - On london Road - Take away or eat in, Great meals reasonably priced with set menus that are great
Takapuna Bar / Rest - (Bottom of west street) Specials that change fortnightly, great venue, try Takapuna Special Pasta
Lions Lare - Near Coles in City centre - There posh Fish & Chips rock with pea cavaiar. Also have b.b.q from £5 with salad buffet and outdoor eating area with Jazz band on a Sunday in the summer
Ask - Near coles in town - Great for pizzas and pastas very romantic with candles on each table
Pizza Express - Devonshire Street - Watch your food being cooked in the open plan kitchen, great place - Salad Niscoise is gorg!
IF ELSE FAILS -
Devonshire chippy - The best chips in sheffield -Devonshire street
Royle Flame - London Road - The best kebebs in town with home made pitta breads, Try the Chicken cooked in front of you
Macdonalds - They do chicken sandwhiches for 99p you know!
DODGE AT ALL ACCOUNTS! -
Any food from the wicker!
Burger / Sweat fan thats outside kingdom on a weekwend
Any chain Southern Fried Chickens ( Sorry know some people are fans but there food hygiene leaves a lot to be desired!)
Happy Noshing! XXXXX
I have to say that WasabiSabi is a place that's purely "all style and no substance". They charge stupidly expensive prices because they're the only Japanese restaurant in Sheffield.
I was so looking forward to going there aswell, such a disappointment. I absolutely love Japanese food and it would have been brilliant if Sheffield had a decent Japanese restaurant. (Not so greeat for my wallet.) Though I guess it may be a bit much to ask, it takes years of training and discipline. The Japanese people I know don't like the place at all.
The funny thing is that it's actually run by Malaysian people!
However, good points: Japanese food! The only place in sheff that's dedicated to Japanese food. Also, nice venue... looks quite flash... good place to "pose" in... and close to where I live. (Means I also have all of the places on London Rd at my disposal, hehe.)
Oh yes, insider information: I believe that Canton Orchard is not especially hygienic... (Heard from someone who used to work there.)
******
Now for my recommendations.
Chinese:
Tim Po Moor - London Rd (Across the road from Bed)
Excellent food, very friendly staff and it's BYOB. I especially like them since their food is absolutely authentic chinese food. (Being chinese myself, it's something I truly appreciate.) I can ask them to cook up anything I want. You really need to ask about their specialities and what is especially fresh that day. (Ask for Ma Po Tofu.... yummy)
They're also an excellent choice for vegetarians, I believe that they've made quite a name for themselves amongst vegetarians and vegans. Their Salt & Pepper Tofu is especially recommended, I have yet to try a place that does them any better.
However, I'd say that the most important thing for me is that since they're a family-run business and try to be as authentic as possible, they use very little MSG and food colourings. If you're used to your typical english chinese takeaway/restaurant, then you may find their food quite different... It wil lack the alarming bright colours and the salty "bite" of being too heavy-handed with the MSG... For me, it's a health issue, but at the same time it allows the light, natural flavour of the fresh ingredients to speak for themselves.
Bad points: It's in a pretty crummy venue... though renovations means that it looks a whole lot better than it did before. It used to be in a smaller shop further up London Rd. and being in a bigger brighter venue means that it's lost it's cosy feeling...
The toilets are *COLD*.... but I guess it means you don't linger... they're perfectly clean, but the dim lighting and dodgy decor serves to make it feel a bit like the loo in a broken down service station.
Western/English:
Rafters
Very very good food, imaginative dishes... lovely cosy little restaurant. It looks quite inconspicuous from the outside, but once inside the warm colours and the interesting windows and of course the rafters makes for a very comforting atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it's expensive which makes it a bit less easy for me to go there on a frequent basis. It being far away and in an obscure place doesn't help either...
Champs - Ecclesall Rd.
An american style sports bar/restaurant... I'm not a sports fan... at all... so for me, the whole sports thing is a BIG turn off... however, the food is good and their selection of cocktails is brilliant... it makes for a very enjoyable night out with a bunch of people... definitely not one to go to for a cosy romantic evening.
Pizza:
Le Pizza - 0114-263 0106, 478 Fulwood Rd
They have to be the best pizza place in Sheffield. I hate pizzas from take-aways... your averge pizza place does pizza with mushy doughy base that feels like it's still raw, blech. Anyway, this place is different... the food is quality. However, they don't do deliveries so you have to make the trek all the way there to get it yourself., but believe me, it's well worth it. (Speaking as a person who lives in Sharrow.)
Other Italian :
I'd agree with a previous comment, BB's is very good. I also like Mama's and Leonies (Next to the Winter Gardens. Very nice food, cosy venue... and I especially like the Diner-style bar where you can sit if you're on your own... it also open directly into the kitchen so you can see exactly what's going on...
Try Sola on North Church Street. Its just had a bit of a refurb, went there on Saturday night and the place was buzzing, great food.
Also Lions Lair has a fantastic menu, i hear that its going to be sheffields first pub to be mentioned in the Michelin Guide

Sorry just had to add my 2p but Pizza Express is the worst place I've ever been in my life - stupidly expensive, disgraceful portions and not particularly nice either.
Classic Rock 18-10-2005, 23:41 This may be the wrong thread to add this to, but we went for a meal at Hui Moon Chinese restaurant on Middlewood Rd and it was one of the worst Chinese meals I've ever experienced.
The service was slow despite there only being a handful of people in and we ended up leaving one of the starters as it was literally a dinner plate of sweetcorn covered in tasteless brown gluey sauce.
The main course was really bland and starchy and full of monosodium glutomate - moreso than any Chinese I've had. The sauces were nasty and the green veg seemed to glow radioactively.
Avoid this place.

The Old Vicerage already has a Michelin Star.
My Faves would have to be:
Thyme in Crosspool (quality contemporary English/ French)
Froggies Bistro on London Rd (Francais all the way. They do a great deal where you get two courses and a glass of wine for £17.50 if you eat before 7.30)
Dim Sum on London Rd- recent convert. Tried it about 2 years ago when it had just opened and I was distinctly unimpressed. Gave it a second chance recently, after hearing some rave reviews here and still pining the closure of the Golden Dragon, and haven't looked back. Superb homemade Dim Sum.
New India Garden- Very good Indian and a local of mine. All the dishes I've tried have had the freshest ingredients. Doesn't afflict me with the old Delhi belly like most Indian cuisine either. Though if you're a fan of Dahls then theirs is not the best you can get in the city.

I have to say they are two of the worse places I've ever eaten.
I would recommend most of the places on London Road, especailly Wasabisabi and Froggies Bistro.
Greenback 19-10-2005, 10:20 My do's and dont's:
Do go to:
Froggie's – there's a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, the prices are reasonable, the food's had a bit of thought put into it and BYOB is always a bonus.
Thyme Café – a little different to your average restaurant, but I can't fault this place at all. The food is rustic but well presented, the portions are huge and the skill level is high.
Blue Fin, Hunter's Bar – took a while to get going, and it took a bit of a bashing from the trendy set at first. But they've turned the place round recently and the (sea)food is superb. Think Slammers but without the pretentions.
Don't go to:
Antibo – Admittedly it's been a while, but the service was the most abysmal I've encountered anywhere in or out of Sheffield. The food's mediocre and overpriced, while the drinks prices have to be seen to be believed.
Que Tal – Not good food and not good service. Instantly forgettable.
genesiscouch 19-10-2005, 10:51 The Lounge on West Street (across from the swim inn) has excellent food, but only serve lunch and breakfast. A lot of it is homemade and all of it is very reasonably priced. Everything I have eaten there has been delicious, and I'm not usually very easy to please.
DaBouncer 19-10-2005, 10:56 The Blue Room Bistro on Woodseats is AMAZING.
Excellent food, relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff and attentive service.
It's not cheap though so be warned.
They do a mix of foods from Steaks, Fish to Chinese and French food.
It's definately a lovely place to go especially if you want a romantic meal with the other half.
I eat out mosy nights, so here goes. You'll have to forgive the lack of / incorrect locations as I'm an out of towner:
Italian:
I've had 3 meals in Antibos (West One). Service has been variable but the food and wine is very good.
Enjoyed the pizza at Ask and the fresh orange is terriffic but they are completely incapable of making 'al dente' pasta even when specifically asked. Stick to the pizza.
Predicably good pizza's from Pizza Express.
Piccolos by Nirmals was pretty good, though make sure the manager serves you and not the waiter! Excellent Tirimisu.
Worse Italian visited so far has been Mama's and Leonies. The pizza was badly presented and had far too much cheese on it. Not at all impressed. Seem to remember they didn't have a "no smoking" section either.
Bars:
Usually try to avoid these as it tends to be ready meals unless you know what you're doing. Did have a very pleasant meal in Takapuna though. All Bar One also okay.
Indian:
Current favourite is Cafe Guru (Westfield St?). Been there about 4 times so far this month. Very nice atmosphere and great food. Food can be a little slow to arrive but it is worth the wait. Peshwari nan is lovely.
Nirmals also comes highly recommended by so long as you don't mind Nirmal doing a hard sell on side dishes!
Everest (London Road?) was very good the first time but extremely poor on the last visit: food so-so and terrible service. Won't be going back.
BJ's (think that was the name) was okay though was somewhat lacking in ambience.
The Indian opposite Tesco's on West Street was passable but I won't be returning.
Other:
Iguana (West One). Nice atmosphere, service good and the chicken fajitas are pretty tasty. Not as good as La Mancha's (West Street) though, which serves better nosh than you might expect.
Enjoyed a couple of noodle dishes at the Noodle Bar (West One), though can't recommend the Thai green curry. Then again I guess it is a noodle bar! Extremely quick, you can be in and out in 15 minutes.
Nandos is just an upmarket KFC, though it's fine if you want something quick.
That's me restauranted out for now. BBs, The Forum and Sheiks should get a visit shortly. :)
Sam @ Dearne 20-10-2005, 08:30 Just noticed someone said
"don't buy any food from the Wicker area"
Now thats a sweeping statement, but from my experience there is one gem down there that I always visit after a pub crawl.
kEBABISH
The food is excellent, freshly cooked in front of you and the little thing that is a good pointer, the 'locals' eat there, I am normally the only caucasian when I go in, I like that feeling, a sign of quality.
I brought a mate up from London once and just happened to mention it and he went wild !!!
"You have a Kebabish, wow, we must go there, my local one is great"
It didn't disappoint. From this I gathered there must be a few about.
Anyway, I can thoroughly recommend it, can't comment on any of the others though
Sam

I agree Slinky. The Wicker houses two good curry houses in the Mangla and The Gulshan.
muddycoffee 20-10-2005, 11:59 Polish
I recently visited the Polonia restraunt on Abbeydale road, just 100 yards from London road. It is a Polish resteraunt and absolutely lovely.
The young Polish waiter was absolutely charming, the food was fresh and wonderful and very reasonable, and we sampled three different polish beers and they were all great.
When we finished they gave us a book with info about Polish cuisine and how too make it yourself. It is open for lunch every day too and we will be going there again soon.
Indian
Last month we visited seven spices Balti, and it was fantastic too. Good service, great food.
Lebonese
We tried the lebonese resteraunt on Glossop road about 6 months ago and I found my meat based dishes a little dissapoining but my friend who had vegitarian food had a great meal. Other than that it was an interesting experience and worth visiting again and I am always keen to try new food and will try other stuff next time.
StillWaters 08-11-2005, 23:58 Regarding good meals, I second the comments on Froggies, good modern European food, friendly service and atmosphere and all round a delightful experience. There's The Supper Club (used to be Carriages) in Abbeydale Road South which is excellent too and along similar lines, plus it has a Claridges trained chef. If you're looking for nice gastropubs there's The Druids Inn at Birchover and The Bull's Head in Ashford in The Water.
Regarding less good meals, The Blue Room I think is over-rated - last time I went I was fairly unimpressed by the service and mediocre (semi-cold) food. I got the feeling the chef had thrown a Gordon that evening, so maybe they were having an off night, but friends who ate their recently said the same. Thyme in Crosspool is a friendly and good food but over-priced in my experience, and is also very difficult to get into (whenever I call they only seem to have tables for 6pm or 10pm, and the bar area where you have to wait is cramped and unwelcoming). Thyme Cafe in Broomhill seems like a better bet to me, in that the food is just as good and the service very friendly without the prices, although it admittedly doesn't have the ambience (or parking). One to avoid is UK Mama in Broomhill - oh no no no no no no, unless you like beans on deep fried toast or fancy being given an (ex Job Centre/STD clinic?) customer satisfaction questionnaire at the end asking if you were offered a private consultation room!

I totally agree with this. When Hui Moon was being renovated I couldn't wait for it to open (it is right behind my house!) however, it was absolutely disgusting! It was so full of MSG that I literally blew up like a baloon - I couldn't even get my rings on. It took about 3 days to go back to normal. I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant!
The food at Viva Tequila gleadless is really nice, the service is great and prices aren't bad too. 2 for 1 on Mondays and Sundays.

I rate it as one of the worst places i've ever eaten.
laughalot 10-11-2005, 20:29 sorry, i know this is a bit of advertising but our bistro Seasons on abbeydale Road got 5 stars in the Star paper. If you like english, good food at affordable prices then give us a try. Not much further to walk than London Road, opposite Threshers.
Otherwise Blue Fin do some good lunch and t-time deals, 2 courses and glass of wine for a tenner on eccy road:D :D
ridgeracer 11-11-2005, 08:52 Try the Blue Room at Woodseats ace place:clap:
