View Full Version : Herman Goering's staff car
StatisTYKE 30-03-2004, 14:31 An old girlfriend's father (from Sheffield) told me that this car was displayed in Sheffield after the war along with a german aircraft (Me 109?). Anyone remember seeing this?
Also were any german aircraft brought down in or near sheffield during the Blitz. I heard once that one was supposed to have come down near Grimethorpe.
sweetdexter 30-03-2004, 16:27 I was around in the early 40 s but I dont remember the car [But that does not mean a thing with the state of my memory these days]
There is a staff car of Hitler's in the War Museum in Ottawa. Canada
During the War..( I know, I sound like Uncle Albert) But during the war, when I was about 5 years old, there were two German aircraft on display on a bombsite near Fitzalan Square I think it was on the site of the bombed out Marples pub, but I could be wrong about that..anyway I can remember being lifted into the cockpit of one of the planes by a man in Air warden uniform.
I remember seeing it on display in Great Yarmouth in front of a car showroom at the top of the main street. It was open topped Mercedes and it was huge, weighing several tons. It was made from armour plate with a 1 1/2 thick bullet proof glass windscreen.
As aboy I was fascinated with a trap door which opened in the floor in front of the rear seats. The mind boggles thinking what that was for, although Herman was well known for his drinking!!
Quite a time after that it appeared on show in Sheffield.
Saw the car — yes, it was a Mercedes — at Kenningsin Sheffield. It weighed, I think, three tons and yes the windows were bullet-proof. Also saw the record speed-breaking Bluebird at Kennings, and he Silver Jubilee in the railway sidings just beyond the Wicker.
I did read somewhere that Goering used 11 different cars, I should think there will be enough around in the car museums for everyone to see one of his cars.
I do have a Swastika car mascot that was taken off a staff car outside the Gestapo Headquarters in Berlin.
An old buddie if mine was a driver for the British Army Intelligence and drove a team straight to the building as soon as they reached Berlin.
He stood outside waiting for them and just couldn't resist unscewing the mascot off the bonnet of one of the cars abandoned outside in the street.
Happy Days!
I remember seeing a car that belonged to a German General or whatever in the 40's, it was on a vacant block of land around where the hole in the road was, I don't know what make it was but it was a big black one, not unlike the gangsters used in the USA, it was bullet proof & had a hard top.

there was a german aircraft crashed in endcliffe woods I saw it
You could be right Arthur, I remember the thickness of the windows, it was built as strong as a tank and had chips in the glass caused by bulletts.
I was only a nipper at the time & was with my Mother & Aunt.

I saw one of them and Bluebird over Christmas at the Motor Car Museum at Beaulieu....:)

I think you'll find that was an American B17, called Mi Amigo, Arthur.
There's a thread somewhere on here that says according to the records no German aircraft came down near Shefffield in the blitz.
Some downed aircraft from the Battle of Britain were brought and exhibited in Barker's Pool.

Here's a photo of a Messerschmitt 109 that was shot down over Margate in September 1940 and displayed in Barker's Pool in aid of the Sheffield Newspapers War Fund: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/Me109.jpg

Yes, I think I posted on it.
There were indeed no German aircraft shot down in or anywhere near Sheffield.
The nearest were three Ju 88's and an He 111 that came down in the York and Bradford areas between May 1941 and March 1945.
Two of these were targeting Belfast and one was lost in a raid on York. The other was a Ju 88 G-6 nightfighter which was strafing the runways at Pocklington and Elvington and clipped a tree causing it to crash.
Several aircraft were lost during raids on Sheffield but these were all shot down along the coastal area between Whitby and the Humber estuary or came down over the North sea.

This is Bf 109 E 4 "White 5" of 3rd Gruppe/JG 53 (53rd Fighter wing), shot down over Kent on 6th September. The pilot was Unteroffizier Schulte and the aircraft crash landed near Manston airfield.
If you look at the tailplane you can see where the swastika has been painted out.
That was due to the Wing Commander, Kommodore Von Cramon marrying a girl who in Goering's opinion was not suitable, he therefore ordered the unit to remove their "Ace of Spades" mascot from the cowlings of their Messerschmitts.
In retaliation the unit overpainted the swastikas on the tailplanes of their machines and until Goering backed down in November that is how things stayed.
This aircraft was based on Guernsey at the time of it's loss I believe.

Greetings Pop T,
Where can I find confirmation that Goering used 11 cars?
I ask because I too have a swastika that my father removed from Goering's car. My father was a member of the OSS and chauffeur to Allen Dulles, chief of station in Berne Switzerland. I have more details but I need to do more research on Goering's car(s) before divulging any further information.
Regards,
SaFille

I wouldn't know where to find out about the Goering Cars as I would think they would have been sold by the British army after the war to private collectors. Maybe contacting a car magazine or a magazine that specialises in military vehicles. Have you tried google search?
I'm sorry I cannot help you further but maybe somone who reads this posting may be able to give you a lead.

I have been doing some work for a customer that owns a 1938 Buick (his is 2 door, Goering's was four door) and he is curious as to why Goering should drive an American vehicle. My customer has a photo of Goering in the car meeting Hitler and I have found others on the web, plus a Youtube video.
Regards
I can't post the links I found yesterday as I'm too new!!!

Goering was simply a lover of fast cars, there is no big reason why he'd have an American car, anymore than an Englishman today might buy a Ferrari or a Porsche.
Goering had several American friends pre-war such as Charles Lindbergh, he certainly would not have been prejudiced against US vehicles.
skyrocket 01-04-2010, 10:35 I remember being allowed to sit in this car around 1949 on a bomb site not far from Fitzallan Square. I thought it was open top but could be wrong as I was only 3.

The Mercedes staff car in the War Museum in Ottawa was in fact one of the cars which Hitler used. It was purchased by Canada in 1970 and at that time it was thought ot have been Herman Göring's car. In 1980 it was found by tracing the serial number back with Daimler Benz that the car was one of Hitler's fleet. The serial number is 429334. On July 19th 1940 Hitler was filmed in this car and it had plate number 148697 on it. He used the car several times. It is still on exhibition in ottawa and has been there in the War Museum since 1971

I lived in Sheffield through the blitz and 'yes' I can remember two German planes on display. Like you, I can remember being lifted into the cockpit of the ME 109E. I know that the other plane was a bomber - I think it was a Heinkel 111 but no one was allowed to go inside it.
