IT IS a milestone in the fight against cancer: in the US the total number of cancer deaths has dropped for the first time since records began in 1930. The biggest cause is a decline in the number of smokers. The announcement coincides with a meeting of more than 110 countries to try to reduce smoking's impact on health, especially in developing nations, where increasing numbers of people are taking up the habit.
Just thought that this might be of interest.
It's of interest to me Cyclone. Thank you, I hadn't heard. Smoking kills. No one in our house smokes. I'd have the odd ciggy now and again when I was younger, but gave it up for good more than 20 years ago.
Strict anti-smoking laws are enforced here, and it's virtually illegal to smoke just about anywhere in public.
It stinks up your house, your car, and your clothing. It'll ruin your teeth and it cost money. Bleh. Why would anyone want to smoke?

Have you seen the smoking banned in pubs thread Sierra.
Apparently it's a vile and perfidious attack on the rights of freedom loving smokers everywhere.
They all have the right to smoke wherever they wish and be dammed with the rights of non-smokers.... Apparently.
I have seen the thread, but I didn't really read all of it. The reason is that the same thing happened here. Restaurants and bars started out with non-smoking sections, and of course, someone lights up and someone else sitting ten feet away complains because of the smoke drifting their way, and the fight is on!
There's just no way to make everyone happy in that situation, so everything was made non-smoking. People can still smoke in their houses and cars, if they wish. Some small places refuse to comply, and still allow smoking. You are really at a disadvantage if you smoke here in California. I try not to be rabid about it, and I've never said anything to anyone, but then...I've never had to. Usually the employees or other patrons bear down on the smoker like a freight train. You'd be better off telling people you torture kittens, than admitting you smoke. :hihi:
