After much agonising, for obvious reasons, I have decided to accept a house on the Manor, near Manor Top. It wasnt an easy decision, but after trying everything and a very long wait, in a very overcrowded household, it seems like this is our best hope. It is not a life sentance, we will stay on the list, but for the next few years, this is us!

The house is on one of the newer North British houses built there, on a cul de sac off Wulfric Road. I have been 5 times at various times of the day and evening to stake the area out and havent seen anything that has worried me yet. The house backs on to 3 pensioners bungalows and is a very large semi with a large corner garden and is a very nice house indeed. Most of the houses around there look OK, there is just the odd one with a bit of rubbish in the garden, none of which are next to mine.

A few questions:
1. If you live around there, what exactly are the problems in that area?
2. Are the local shops no go areas? Can I walk there safely?
3. Infant Schools. Which do you recommend?
4. Doctors. Which do you recommend?

The manor is full of good people and suffers from a stuck like glue bad rep.I think its best to make your own mind up based on your own experience. I worked in that area for about 8 years-but you need a local to give you the spec on docs and schools because these things are always changing.Just be open and talk to folk-you'll find good people and good nieghbours .

Thanks ant and hunnibunni, that is most encouraging. I think its probably not as bad as people make out, there are lots of other places which are much worse. I am looking forward to making new friends there.

My father in law was in fact born on Windy House Lane and grew up around that area, my mother in law was from the Arbourthorne, not far away. My partner went to St Teresas School. So in a way we have come full circle I suppose. But what is so odd, is that the in laws are the very ones who have said "dont go there".

my mum works and lives in the area. my little brother goes to norfolk community primary school and his dad is the chair of the teacher/parent goveners.
i myself went to pipworth school.
the manor estate has come on leaps and bounds in the regeneration projects that has been happening in the area.
i agree with the others that if you talk to the local people and go there without prejudice then you may be pleasantly surprised

I wonder if we are in the catchment for Norfolk primary. Thats the new school isnt it. I think the nearest is Prince Edward which didnt have such a good OFSTED, a lot of staff were leaving at one time. Thank you for your encouraging remarks.

The manor estate is no worse than any other estate. I used to live on the estate next door to the manor, (Base Green). I lived there for 18 years, so its can't be that bad an area.

The best shops to go to is the big super market at manor top, (Summerfields), or you will be on the route for the super tram, this will take you into the city centre. The trams are every 10 mins.
The shopping area around manor top is ok and well light at night time.

There is a school at manor top, which is wthin walking distance of Wulfric Road, I think it will be fine for your child/children, its no worse than any other school.

I think you will be fine living in Wulfic Road. I would just like to wish you happiness for your new home.

Take care
Best Wishes

This exchange sadly fell through. The lady in question couldnt make her mind up and was forever changing it.

So Im still looking.

What a shame! You must be really dissappointed. Hopefully something else will turn up soon.

This exchange seems to have revived itself but I am still unsure, as the woman offering the house is suddenly very keen (I smell desperation!).

Is there a problem round here with the mini bike/off road bike riders?

Will our cars be safe on our drive behind gates?

Where exactly on the upper manor do the youths/kids congregate?

Thank you!

i know down around wulfric road area is not very good or it wasnt, my son lived in the flats down there was only there a few weeks and gave his flat up but that is 3 years ago, 2 families that caused trouble got moved out of the houses that were just off wulfric road so i had been told by the housing as they had recieved several complaints, it could be better now. maybe they just want to move as the houses are dearer than council houses, if they are considering anywhere to move and your house is not cheaper to rent then i would think they are desperate to move. my mum lives in the flats on windyhouse lane just up from there and its ok around there, but not sure on the houses.

Hope the area has changed since we lived there 9 years ago,
It wasn't so much the really young kids then but the older ones
Including our neigbours. I wish you well

I think the wulfric road area is ok compared to some of the others on the manor. They have pulled half the houses down round there and since then it seems much better.

Thanks. Did you get your move BJS? I am thinking of turning this one down because there is something wrong, I dont know what. I cant understand this woman's desperation to move. I also dont really want my grandson to go to school round there. I heard Prince Edwards had had a lot of staff problems and it wasnt doing very well. It was only doing well for the children with SEN, and no offence, but our lad is very bright, but I can see he would soon be attracted to trouble makers.

I got my daughter in a school miles away, obviously it means traveling but if you don't want them to go to the catchment area school they don't have to. Yes I am moving in the next week or two, we are moving to Arbourthorne, another area everybody slags off, but the road we will be on seems ok . Hope it works out ok for you.

i'm on the arbourthorne just around the corner from the school on berners, its ok there had a few probs when we first moved on 2 years ago but seems ok now, my son is on top end of arbourthorne rd and its ik there so is on paddock where my other son lives. i have been told that its the end near city road thats the worse

My partner spent his early years on the Arbourthorne. It seems OK to me, but what do I know? My grandson is very happy in nursery at Beighton and its nice there, so we are starting to seriously think about staying put. The other option would be to send him to St Teresa's where my partner and his sis went, but they are not baptised yet, so thats all a bit uncertain.

Yellowrose, I've read several of your posts on different threads and I know how hard you've tried to get a bigger property. As you seem to be happy where you are, have you considered your daughter and grandchild perhaps getting a separate house near you, giving you all the room you need. I don't know your family circumstances, but she would get priority if you are classed as overcrowded?
