View Full Version : Tollerfield Family
Hi, my name is Sallie Lewis and with my dad, I'm currently researching my family tree and i was wondering if anybody has heard of, or knew, the Tollerfield family in Sheffield.
Tollerfield is not the most common of surnames, and as far as I know, our branch of the Tollerfield family are the only ones to reside in Sheffield.
My great grandfather was Herbert Tollerfield, also known as Robert. He was born in Burton Street in Nether Hallam in 1879. He was the son of John and Ellen Tollerfield. My great great grandfather was a tailor in Sheffield.
Ellen remarried in 1884 after the death of John, to someone called William Smith. In the 1891 census, they were living at 12 Carter Road in Heeley.
My great grandfather had six brothers: William, Frederick, Daniel, Harry, George and Job. Although both George and Job died very young.
William Tollerfield lived with his wife Matilda and their children Ellen and William at 100 Denmark Road in 1901.
Harry lived at 207 Richard's Road in Heeley in 1901 with his wife Fanny and their daughter Annie. Harry may also have been known as Henry.
Daniel as far as we know was away fighting in South Africa in 1901, but did come back to Sheffield, as he married there in 1902. Daniel was a police constable.
My great grandfather however did not remain in Sheffield and moved to Suffolk before 1901.
If anybody out there has any information to offer or anything else, I would be most grateful.
Thanks everyone!
Sallie

Directorys not always complete may be other Tollerfiels.
Byeee,
David Tollerfield use to manage the White Lion on Heely Bottom in the 80's and his son David use to manage the Red Lion until a few years ago...I think he has now got a pub on Derbyshire Lane.
Hi Shullie,
Thanks for the reply regarding the two David Tollerfields running the two aforementioned pubs.
Do you know either of these David Tollerfields? And, if so, is there any way that they can be contacted?
Also, does the below link show the two pubs that you are actually referring to?
http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/pubs/heeley.htm
Thanks very much for your reply :)
Sallie
Hi Hutch,
Thank you very much for your reply regarding Daniel Tollerfield's whereabouts in 1927 and 1938.
I believe that the first one that you talk of is actually my great great uncle Daniel, living at Anns Road with his wife Emily.
I think that the other one however is his son Daniel. Though I could be wrong on this, as my great great uncle was a press forge hand at one time during his early years, but he was a police constable later on in his life. I will go and check the records for a death for the elder Daniel Tollerfield though.
By the way, how do you go about coming across such directories? I'm pretty intrigued by this!
Again, thank you very much for your reply :)
Sallie

I know this guy's son Adam..well I did last year. The pub they own is the Sportsman on Warminster/Harveyclough Roads as far as I am aware, but I seem to remember them possibly moving in the last few months. Could this be who you mean?
Hello there Mark,
First of all, I would like to thank you for replying to me. I have to say that I was very surprised to hear that you are related to the Tollerfield family of Sheffield. It wasn't something that I was expecting from my posting on here really.
As you have already read, I am the great granddaughter of Herbert Tollerfield.
And, I think from what you've told me in your replying post, that you are the great grandson of Harry Tollerfield (Herbert's older brother). Is this correct?
It would be nice to hear some more from you, if of course you wanted to correspond some more with me that is. I have a lot that I could tell you about and a few photos to show you if you were at all interested.
Thanks once again for your reply.
Best Wishes,
Sallie

Hi Mark,
Thanks for replying to me once again, I'm very pleased to hear from you :).
I'm glad to hear that your mum read the report that I put up on the Tollerfield family. Was she aware beforehand that there was a Herbert or Robert Tollerfield in your family? (My great grandfather preferred to be called Robert)
Here in Hull, we only have two of the Tollerfield children alive now, they are my great uncle Bernard and my great auntie Betty. The other Tollerfield children were Gertrude, Nellie (My grandma), Robert, Harry (Named after your great grandfather) and Ida. I'm not sure if any of them have ever met any of the Tollerfield family in Sheffield, but my grandma did say that her dad made a few trips over to Sheffield to see his family.
I have quite a few photos of my grandma and her siblings. I also have an old photograph of Herbert and Harry's brother, Daniel, which I obtain a few months ago. All for your perusal :).
Unfortunately, however, there is no known photo of my great grandfather. There was one which my great grandma had over the fire of him dressed in army uniform, wearing all of his medals. However, after my great grandma died, the man who she lived with pull the photograph off the wall and threw it into the fire, apparently. Whether this is actually true or not, I'm not sure though.
Best Wishes,
Sallie
Hi Sallie
Just found this and I dont know if you are still looking into this but My name is David Harry Tollerfield, My dad is David Tollerfield, (who ran the red lion). My Grandad is also David Tollerfield (ran the White lion). My great Grandad is Harry Tollerfield, named after his dad Harry Tollerfield (my great Great Grandfather) which is where my middle name comes from.. He had a brother called Herbert!!. Your great Grandfather!!!
Hope this is of use to you.
If you need anymore information just post back ill be glad to help.
Dave Tollerfield
Hi Dave,
Thanks for replying to me here. I guess that there must be some sort of word of mouth going on in relation to my post on here!
Your post surprised me, and it also made me very happy. I told my dad about your post, with which he displayed the same high level of enthusiasm as I did. I have received another post from another Tollerfield in Sheffield on here, as you can see, who is also descended from your great great grandfather Harry Tollerfield.
Of course, I would love to hear about anything that you could tell me. I too have a lot of stuff that you may want to look at, if you are interested.
Best Wishes,
Sallie Lewis
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there's a shot of Burton Street in the film 'The Full Monty'? I read somewhere that there was, but as I'm not sure. Could anyone help me out on this?
If Mark or Dave are reading this, I hope that you are still interested in conversing over the Tollerfield family?
Thanks all.
If you do a search on this site for "Burton Street", you will find a few references to the "Full Monty".
Also the scene where Robert Carlyle "Gaz" is taking is young son "Nathan" (William Snape) to school was filmed on Burton Street.
Must find the video out and take another look.
Thanks for the information, Pietro. I will check out my Full Monty DVD tonight.
I'm not entirely sure where you mean, but I'm sure I'll find it :).
Regards,
Sallie.

Hi Mark,
It's great that you're still interested :) and I'm very happy at this news.
At the moment, I'm also trying to get all of my family history stuff together. A hard task on some sides, as it goes back as far as 1590.
Will look very much forward to hearing from you!
Regards,
Sallie
P.S. : Did I give you my email address, and if not, would you like it?
SolidsSister 27-08-2004, 11:26 Hi
If anyone else is interested in the Burton St/ Hillsborough/ Owlerton areas of Sheffield have a look at the Burton St Community History Project's website www.burtonstreet.org.uk (click on the History Project logo on the front page)
Hi SolidsSister,
If you are part of the Burton Street Project, I have to say that I love your site! I showed my dad and he was very impressed!
I would definitely recommend this site to anyone who hasn't been there. The pictures on it and the stories are very wonderful to read.
Regards,
Sallie
Hi everyone,
I recently went to my local library to look through the bmd's to see what I could find in regards to the Tollerfield family in Sheffield.
I found the following, and I'm wondering if anyone recognises the names of any of these Tollerfields:
Wilfred Tollerfield (Died 1942 aged 38 )
Hilda Tollerfield (Died 1966 aged 59)
Harry Tollerfield (Died 1966 aged 62)
All the following are births of Tollerfields in Sheffield (Bar Freddie Tollerfield, who was born in Wortley). All of the following have mother's maiden name down as Thorpe, which really doesn't help me much as to which Tollerfield they belong to, as at least three of my great great uncles married ladies with the surname Thorpe!
Daniel Tollerfield (Born 1911)
Arthur Tollerfield (Born 1911)
May Tollerfield (Born 1912)
Freddie Tollerfield (Born 1913)
Dora Tollerfield (Born 1916)
Edna Tollerfield (Born 1920)
Ken Tollerfield (Born 1923)
If anyone out there can shed any light on the above names, I'd love to hear from you and would appreciate it immensely.
Regards,
Sallie

Hello Sallie,
Although I have not seen it myself there is a book called 'Sheffield at the Front' which consists of photographs of c500 Sheffield men who served in the Boer War. I HAVE seen the index which was posted to a genealogical forum some time ago, and it includes the following:
Tollerfield Daniel PC 162 Highland Light Inf. [page]34
So this looks like a source of a photo of your gr grandfather !
The Sheffield library copy seems to be missing :-(. If you would like I can see if I can get a scan from the person who posted the index. I *think* he actually owns a copy.

Cantdance,
Do you have two sisters called Jane and Brigitte? If so, great, I used to hang around with Marcus Williamson who lived across the road. Jane Tollerfield was the most beautiful girl I ever saw, Brigitte was lovely too, but in a different age group to me.
Cheers

Hello Andrew,
Sorry for my taking so long to reply. I reformatted my computer and forgot all about checking my board on here!
I'm at a bit of tiff with the Tollerfield family history, so any help would be very much appreciated. I am gathering a tree of the Sheffield Tollerfields together, so if you would like a copy, please say so.
Would like to stay in touch if possible?
Best wishes,
Sallie

Hello there Hugh
The Daniel Tollerfield of whom you speak is my great grandfather's elder brother.
I also came across this information a while back and got in touch with the guy who had the copy of the book. The picture of Daniel is of a very handsome man, whom according to my great aunt Betty looks very much like my great grandfather.
Thanks very much for the reply though, it is much appreciated :).
Best wishes,

would love a copy of your work and please let me know if you have any missing info.
Happy for you to keep in touch.

Hi Andrew,
Have sent a copy of the Tollerfield work to your email address. It may be a little difficult to understand as it's only a very primative piece of work, but I obviously intend to capitalise on it with the more information that I receive.
Best wishes,
Sallie

Are you still looking at the Tollerfield family tree?
Paul_Jones 26-12-2007, 22:12 Hi
My name is Paul Jones, grandson of Edna Tollerfield (Jones) whose father was Daniel Tollerfield. He was indeed a police officer and my father has his truncheon along with photos of Daniel and his wife Emily.
I only found this site a few weeks ago and was fascinated to find out more about the family history.
Daniel Tollerfield married Emily Thorpe who we think was related to Matilda Thorpe who married William Tollerfield. Interesting to see that on one of the censuses Matilda is listed as being the family servant.
I continue to dig around ancestry.co.uk so all extra information welcome. I also see there is a big article on Gertrude Tollerfield on the BBC website.
Regards for now and would be really interested in speaking with Sallie if she is still around to swap notes.
Paul
Hi,
have a look on friends reunited - I was at school with Ian Tollerfield, Newfield School left tween 81 & 83 I'm sure he's on that site. Apologies if you already have the link.

Hello Paul,
I am still VERY interested and am still doing the family research.
I have a couple of photographs of Daniel and what I believe are some of his children, which I would really like verification on who they are.
The Gertrude Tollerfield article on the BBC website was written by me - she was my grandma's elder sister. However, I didn't give my permission for it to be placed on the BBC website as I originally composed it for a different site entirely.
William, Daniel and another brother Harry all married sisters.
I would really appreciate any photographs that you could offer which I could exchange any information for.
Hope that you get this response.
Best wishes,
Sallie

EmmahLouise 13-10-2010, 10:39 Hello. I am sure that the family you are looking for is mine.
My mothers family are Tollerfields from Sheffield.
My Grandad John Tollerfield was born in sheffield 1939, he worked up to become Cheif engineer in the Navy and then for the Merchant Navy he currently lives in Scotland with his wife Christine Tollerfield (Needham) they have 5 children (in Order of birth)-:Marie,Adele,John,Rachel(my mum), Michael.
His Brother is David Tollerfield and they had a half brother Leslie who had a child whom we don't know.
My Grandads dad was Harry Tollerfield he was a Painter and Decorator. He had a sister named known as Gwen who married a man called George they had no children. Harry had more brothers and sisters though i am sure of their names at the moment.
My Grandad has made a family tree and managed to track back to the early 1800s.
I recognise many of the names posted from memory of the family tree-:
William Tollerfield and Matilda tollerfield (Thorpe) they were my Grandads,GrandParents.
The Harry i mentioned would have been you're Grandads Brother.
So if this is correct then i would be you're Fourth Cousin. and my Grandad would Be you're Second.
Please send E-mail to emma-warrender@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested and i will send you a copy of my Grandads Family Tree or get you in contact with him as he will know more then my mother and me.
