Manchester United can no longer brag that they are the richest club in the world.

Having topped the world football rich list for the past eight years, Real Madrid have eclipsed them as the game's wealthiest outfit, coining in £186.2 million in 2004/05.

That represents a £20 million lead on United, who saw their earnings drop from £171.5 million to £166.4 million.

The figures are largely dictated by the success of clubs' commercial departments, and they reflect a surge in the popularity of Real merchandise around the globe.

A boom in shirt sales has been spearheaded by the arrival from United of the iconic David Beckham, and his Old Trafford exit has had a massive influence on the statistics.

Milan remain in third place (£158 million), with Juventus (£154.9 million) fourth, while Chelsea (£149.1 million) slip a place to fifth.

The top ten is completed by Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Inter and Arsenal, while Newcastle feature in twelfth place, Tottenham thirteenth, Celtic sixteenth, Manchester City seventeenth and Everton feature at number eighteen.

Who cares? United never spent it on players anyway!

United are increasing their capacity to 75,000 next season, which will help.

Additionally I think the Park signing will sell a lot of shirts in Korea!
(Cynics might say that was the intention all along)

The information is on the sky sports website under the Man Utd section.

I was going to post this earlier but I didnt want to bore you all further with any Man Utd related news :hihi:

Real Madrid are only #1 because they got beckham from us otherwise it would be a different picture entirely.

It is going to get worse for ManUre, as the results where for the season 2004/05. It does not take into account ManUre's eary champions league exit and the debt associated with the Glazier take over, it will be interesting to see what next seasons results will be.

Please explain to me how is it going to get worse?

We are increasing our stadium size to 75,000 from next season, we have 1 if not 2 new midfielders coming into bolster the squad in the summer and we also have 2 players who when they have finished adjusting to the premiership will do fantastically well for us.

Not to mention the talent we have that is still coming through the ranks ie: Rossi who is developing into quite a player and also the continued growth of Ronaldo, Park and Rooney.

Also, the new sponsor will be known soon and I would be surprised if it wasnt a big name sponsoring our shirts from next season onwards.

Bad? - Things are looking quite nice for us at the moment next season.

I was listening to a discusion on 5live about this. The general concensus was that the 2005/06 financial results will be even worse because of the performance in the champions league. Not only was there a loss of direct of income from the champions league they also speculated that there will be a big loss of advertising revenue and merchandise sales.

They also thought that the loss of the prestige of being the richest Football team would also cost Manure Advertising revenue and merchandise sales.

Add to this the cost of having to service the £100s of millions of debt that came with the Glaziers' takeover all explain how potentialy ManUre are going to slip down the Football clubs richlists.

Maybe the extra 10 000 fans will cover some of the short fall, but prices will have to increase at old trafford to cover the short fall. Traditionally old trafford has some of the lowest ticket prices in the premier league, so will old trafford sell out with more expensive tickets?

Intrestingly Arsenal seem to think that they will make more of a profit from their new 60 000 seated stadium than ManUre will make from their 75 000 seated stadium due to the ticket pricing policy.

How does that song go? "there may trouble ahead......."

The figures are simply based on turnover, not profit, else Chelski wouldn't be 5th having posted the record breaking losses that they've recently done.

The figures are actually based upon income through business and doesn't include any transfer dealings or outgoings like saleries etc.
