View Full Version : Help, I need a chiropodist or something
I've got a nasty ingrowing toenail and it's getting pretty gruesome with infection. Went to the docs, got some antibiotics and made an appointment to have it cut but when I went today they'd made a mess of the appointment and told me to come back in a week.
I can't do that (got 4 month old twins need to be able to walk/drive/cope) so I need a chiropodist ASAP just to cut off the corner that's digging in then I can deal with the gruesome bits later.
Can they do it while it's infected? Will they tell me to go to my docs? Any ideas, any recommendations?
My son went to a place in Chesterfield, can't remember the name the something chiropractic centre/clinic. They were very good, I am sure there will be somewhere in Sheffield, but you may need to get the infection down first. If they remove part of the nail, you could be out of action for a few days though. Good luck, I know how painful it can be. xx

Arrr ... twins how cute, double the trouble though.
There is a good one on Wostenholme road at Sharrow. You have to go in through "Cedrics" hairdressers as he works behind there.

His name is Sean lambert and his number is 2552205. Good man and reasonable price. If you're in Westfield it costs about £15 and you can claim about a tenner back.
My friend and I have both had bad experiences with this. The doctors have done it and it didn't resolve anything. In my case he used an unsterile pair of scissors and it just made it worse. I totally wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing but I've done mine myself and haven't had a problem since.
NatalieSheff 16-02-2006, 12:44 i know a few people that go to the lady in hillsbrough, apparently very good even if you have tickly feet
Tried doing it myself but there's a bit I can't get to, it's been so infected that there's some extra tissue grown over the top.
Just been to see Healthy Feet in town but they said it would be minor surgery for sure at a cost of £200 and we're not with Westfield. (Can't join now either, 3 month buffer zone required).
Bother bother bother!
lizzmobile 16-02-2006, 14:00 If you don't react badly to it, (some people are very sensitive to it) a drop of tea tree oil onto your toe would help with the infection in the short term.
Thanks but I am waaaay past the tea tree stage, there's a whopping bit piece of nail that needs to come out so I can walk, after that the tea treee will help.

Think I know where you've been going wrong.... it seems to me as though you need a good veterinary surgeon. :D
Haha, I'm sure my fella would agree... having said that they might just get on with it instead of all the faffing around the NHS do.
Now where's the number for our cats' vet..?
:D :D
I'd say same advice as I gave someone the other day - get up to the Hallamshire Walk In (sorry! ;) ) Clinic to be seen quickly. It's not fair of your doctor to leave you unable to walk just because they've messed up their appointments! Especially if you have young kids to see to.
And in the meantime try bathing it in a bowl of warm salty water - but be prepared for it to sting! This may help to 'draw' the pus. :gag:
After calling NHS direct for advice, visiting a chiropodist who mentioned £200 as a minimum price, going to the Walk (or hobble) In clinic at the Hallamshire and a quick trip to A&E (under advice from NHS direct - nutters) I finally ended up with a lovely lady named Lisa Shaw in Chapeltown.
She butchered said nail (without anaesthetic! eek), removed a large ragged piece, sorted the other side and checked my other foot before removing a bit more, popping silver nitrate on the granuloma and iodine over the lot. I can walk again, albeit with some pain but hurrah! :) :) :)
And a big YAH BOO to the doc! :loopy:
Hmm that's interesting. Although I've removed the offending piece of nail I can't get rid of the granuloma, does anyone know if you can get silver nitrate over the counter?
Not sure about that but maybe you could. If not, I'm told that eventually the granuloma becomes reabsorbed into the flesh and levels out.
You could always try e-Bay, weirder things have been sold on there!

Ha ha, I think Ill stick to trying Boots tomorrow and also ask the pharmacist to make sure I don't end up poisoning myself or anything.
Glad you got yours sorted I know exactly how painful they can get to be
footdoctor 26-05-2006, 08:57 Glad you feel better. The hypergranulation tissue will receed on its own. You can't buy silver nitrate over the counter.
I think they prefer to be called Podiatrists these days.
