View Full Version : Top 5 Albums of all time!

1. Searching For The Young Soul Rebels - Dexy's Midnight Runners.
The finest and most-overlooked album from one of the most over-looked bands ever. The trouble was that after bringing out this stunning soul/punk hybrid album, they went all daft and brought out Come On Eileen. After that they were doomed to be looked on as a novelty act. But in 1979, they were real contenders. This album is so good it makes me cry.

2. Otis Blue - Otis Reading.
The best soul album ever recorded by the greatest soul singer of all time!

3. Sandinista - The Clash.
I was going to choose London Calling, but for the sheer brashness and foolishness of bringing out a triple album I award third spot to Sandinista. As with all the greatest Clash material, its blend of punk, funk & reggae is mind-blowing. Check out the Magnificent 7. Awesome.

4. The Best of Bobby Darrin.
Better than Sinitra? I reckon.

5. Any Northern Soul compilation.
Uplifting vocals, pounding beats, heart-stopping intros. Northern Soul really is the best! Ghost in My House, The Snake, Girls Are Out To Get You, Move On Up, The Bottle, the list is endless. Hurray for Northern Soul!

The 'public' would say things like OK Computer, Nevermind, Definitely Maybe, Sgt Pepper etc. All of which are good albums, but are they REALLY people's personal faves? My personal favourites are:

Fuzzbox - Big Bang
The greatest girl group ever and when I was 9 years old I just LOVED this to pieces

Roxette - Look Sharp
Aaaah the mighty Roxette. Could have been any album of theirs (except the crap ones no-one bought) but this probably just clinches it.

Catatonia - International Velvet
Torn between this and Way Beyond Blue but I Am the Mob is on this one, so that sways it.

My Life Story - The Golden Mile
A favourite when at college and still great to put on before a night out

Kylie Minogue - Kylie
The first album I ever bought and still a classic

And even though we're only allowed five, special mentions for Beth Orton - Trailer Park, Dubstar - Disgraceful, B52s - Cosmic Thing, Alanis - Jagged Little Pill/Under Rug Swept and Belly - Sweet Ride (best of), all of which are regular fixtures on the stereo. I could go on....

As you get older you don't listen to whole albums anymore whereas when you were a nipper, you'd play the 10 you'd got over and over again.
So mine are:
Housemartins London 0 Hull 4
Stone Roses The Stone Roses
Jam All mod cons or Snap! for all the singles.
Stereophonics Word gets around
Brand new heavies Brand new heavies
With a special mention to Tracey Ullman's You broke my heart in seventeen places as it was possibly the most played ever album by me.

Tough one. I'll have a crack, in no particular order;

Joy Division; Unknown Pleasures
It's bleak yet warm, depressing yet uplifting. Absolutely beautiful album.

Aphex Twin; The Richard D James Album
I could have picked almost any Aphex album really, but I seem to be listening to this alot recently. I don't think there's anyone alive that can touch this guy.

Bob Dylan; The Freewheelin'
My first and still my favourite Dylan album.

The Sex Pistols; Never Mind The ******** Here's The Sex Pistols
Still as searing as it was nearly 30 years ago.

Squarepusher; Go! Plastic
The sound of a restrained mentalist. My Red Hot Car is one of the best singles ever released too.

Jeff Buckley - Grace
Give yourself up to Jeff and he delivers in spades, Zeppelin mixed with er, Tim Buckley.

Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Mature but not safe, clear understanding of human condition/herself, rich, complex, enduring.

Can - Ege Bamyasi
Ah to be a member of Can and live in a castle while inventing the music styles of the next 30 years.

Various Artists - Roots 'n' Culture [21 Mighty Reggae Cuts]
Almost faultless compilation, along with the Frontline series turned me onto Reggae in big way. "I'm a rebel, soul rebel"

The Afghan Whigs - Gentleman
Beauty and discord mix with raw emotion as band struggle (and succeed) to make altRock classic.

The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The B*llocks, Heres The Sex Pistols
Still one of the most powerful albums of the 20th century! Every time you put the record on it still sounds as fresh as what It must have sounded like in the 70's...

The Verve - Urban Hymns
An incredible album. Richard Ashcroft proved he is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, with some of the most beautifully crafted songs ever written.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Whatever happened to the good old fashioned concept album?! This was Pink Floyd at their most creative. A breathtaking record, that takes you on a journey everytime you hear it.

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
A stonking album! So much energy and passion, that have rarely been captured on a studio album.

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Northern Soul meets Rock n Roll... Everyone always cites "Exile On Main Street" as the best Stones album; but for me Sticky Fingers is a far greater piece of work.

This is a tricky Q...but I take the challenge!!

The Prodigy - The experience - difficult to choose just one - love em all!! Can't listen without flinging arms round, moving feet and general feel good.

Orbital - Insides - again difficult to choose - those tracks just do it everytime!!

Happy Mondays - Pills Thrills - always makes me smile!

Lamb - Debut - again hard to choose - I love em all, but this does have a few fav's, can dance to or whatever? !!

Last one...The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses - easy to listen to anytime, whatever the mood.

Fuzzbox - Big Bang
The greatest girl group ever and when I was 9 years old I just LOVED this to pieces

AHHH! I used to work with Jo Dunne who was the bass player with Fuzzbox - she was Vicky the lead singers sister. I worked with her in the carphone warehouse of all places! She's a top chick - I'll email her and tell her she has a fan, she used to get ever so embarrassed about her days in the 'box but she lived a fairly annonymous existence til i outed her!

Errm my top 5.

Revolver - The Beatles
OK Computer - Radiohead
What will the neighbours say? Girls Aloud
Return to Saturn - No Doubt
Light Years - Kylie

Represents my changing tastes in music over the years - from 60's retro chic - to 90's britpop indie to sublime pop!

Squeeeee!!!!!!!!! I thought she was Mags' sister...? Sigh that just shows how much of a sad Fuzzette I was. Tell her to do a reunion!!!!! Pink Sunshine is surely due the remix treatment soon... after all everything else I loved from that era (listen to Your Heart, Waiting For a Star etc) has been trashed by a dance mix that at least gets people to remember the class of the original.

Come on, Fuzzbox reunion, let's make it happen people (me suspects am on me own with this one)

My Life Story - The Golden Mile
A favourite when at college and still great to put on before a night out

Stunning album! I haven't listened to it in yonks, I should put it on.

As for my top 5, I'd say that I listen to on average 12+ hours of music a day this is stupidly difficult to put down as a solid thing. However, there have been a few standout albums which have defined the music I listen to today:

Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children
Seafood - When do we start fighting?
Sigur Rós - ágćtis byrjun
The Crocketts - The Great Brain Robbery
Pulp - His & Hers

hmm always tough...
(in no order)

Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
... Overproduced yet delicate, drug fuelled angelic noise. Quite simply one of the most unsuccessful expensive records ever made.
Pet Sounds - The Beach boys
... Was gonna pick another Beach Boys album- say, Today or Wild Honey or Sunflower. But I would have only been doing that to look different. This is awesome. Songs to save your life.
Second Guess - Reel People
... nu-soul/broken beat supergroup of sorts, amazing songwriting and production, quite simply seminal but with a rubbish distributor. Then Kenny Dope did a slightly worse mix of "Can't Stop" and everyone heard it on radio one, because this time somebody actually remembered to mail them a copy. Think this did/is getting a recent/soon re-release. Bo.
Vocalcity - Luomo
... Sublime scandanavian deep-house. Listen to it in the bath, or suspended from a tree over a waterfall. All the bleeps sound like robotic leprechauns.
There's a Riot Goin On - Sly & The Family Stone
... Yes

If I could use fractions between 1 and 5 also, I'd pick these:

C'est Chic - Chic
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
Amnesia - Mr Fingers
Come into my Room - Norma Jean Bell
Aja - Steely Dan
Innervisions - Stevie Wonder
Paradise - Inner City
Solitaire - Only Child
Trinity (Past, Present, Future) - Slum Village

Not in order but....

Beatles- Abbey Road/Revolver/Rubber Soul(i cant pick!! dont make me choose!!!) you know why- they changed music forever and are and always will be the best band in the world.

Jimi Hendrix- Are you experienced-This got the rulebook on music and shredded it! it changed guitar playing forever. his guitar playing is class!!!!the music is brilliant and the wild, unpredictabilty of the music and guitar playing is what i love best!

Coldplay- Parachutes- im not keen on it now as ive played the album to death but this was a first class album! it lasted me a whole summer holiday that did! the melodies and lyrics are sad and haunting and perhaps a little depressing but it makes you happy in a weird way.

Kinks- any with you really got me, well respected man......any of them cos not only were the kinks orignal they wrote very funny lyrics and with songs such as plastic man evryone knows someone like that! they wrote about stuff that we were going through(and its still relevant today) in a funny way. i also like them cos they're a bit insane which is always good for a band.

Arctic monkeys- ill probably get sick of this after a bit but was listening to it yesterday and i luved it!!! so its staying!!

all of these albums i like as well cos i like ALL ,or nearly all with possible exception of a couple, on the albums and that is very rare to find an album with evry track being brilliant!!

I'm the opposite; when I first bought it I thought it was dull and very average. Now after they're other two "excessively produced" albums, I think it is the best thing they have done. I have a lot more time for it than I did when it was first released.

Other favourite live album is Grateful Dead's "Live Dead"... and while I'm at it a mention for "Workingmans Dead" and "American Beauty". Has any band released two albums as good as this in the same year?

I'm with you!!!

Hmm, s'pose I should list 5 LP's while I'm here...er...

Orange Juice - You Can't Hide Your Love Forever - the record that taught me that "feeling" is way more important than technical brilliance

Adem - Homesongs - Just indescribably beautiful

Velvet Underground - 3rd Album - probably not as "cool" as the first two but sod being cool - I like pretty tunes.

Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy - Astounding combination of swoonsome songs and fearsome noise. Like listening to the Beach Boys whilst using a hairdryer.

Monkey Swallows The Universe - The Bright Carvings - Gorgeous folky pop songs with ace lyrics. And they're from Sheffield. Oh, and they're on my little record label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation (http://www.theespc.com)

Anyway, back to more pressing matters - When are gonna put Fuzzbox on!!!

Sonic Youth - Washing Machine. Not as cool as Daydream Nation but just as good.

The Beatles - The Beatles. I like the way they make you sit through the average songs, so at the end you can pick it apart and work out which bits you loved and which bits you hated. I don't see how anyone can say its "too long" - thats its beauty.

Jeff Buckley - Grace. Do i need to comment?

Damien Rice - O. Quiet is the new loud.

Mississippi John Hurt - The Last Sessions. The man can play.
