Can anyone give advice to a new Apple Mac user who has just converted from years of Windows use and beginning to think she made a mistake? Is it possible to load Windows on to a Mac?

Hi Emma-

you certainly haven't made a mistake! It's possibly the best decision you have made in your life. Things might seem all very new and different, alien even, but you'll quickly discover that your mac is far cooler, friendlier and more powerful than a Windows PC.

Firstly, ask yourself what it is that is troubling you. If you used your Windows boxes for general work use, then many applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, are available for the Mac. Except it works a lot better (Microsoft's own words). Alternatively, iWork is a brilliant alternative, featuring Keynote, which blows Powerpoint out of the water. It retails for about £60.

If you want to use your Mac for your own personal creative projects, then you are in a far better position than you were with a Windows PC. iLife is just the start, there are myriad different creative applications that either exist exclusively on the Mac, or in more advanced versions than their PC counterparts.

You could join a Mac usergroup if you're stuck. People will be friendly and welcoming, and not a bit patronising - try http://www.ymug.org/ for instance. Or there's loads of people on here using Macs.

To answer your question regarding running Windows on a Mac - software emulation IS possible, with Virtual PC, although having to emulate a different processor architecture means high level apps, e.g. games, will be slow.

Hope that helps. PM me if you need any help.

Defstat's right, macs rule. They are easier to use and maintain than a pc and don't go wrong. It won't take long to get used to the small differences and when you do you'll wonder how you you ever coped with you old windows machine.

I don't know anything about the emulation software, I never even considered using it.

I've used mac's for years and a few people I know have converted to macs.
There are some limitations with regards to the amout of software availible but that is more than made up for with the ease of use and reliability.
I've had no virus, spyware or trogans in the 11 years I've been using the net.

Is there something specific you're having problems with? Is there something you can't work out? Software you can't get the hang of?

Let us know and we'll try to help.

Given that intel are now making Mac processors it's theoretically (very theoretically) possible to get windows running in a Mac.... but why would anyone want to?

Macs are ace - I use both PCs and Macs regularly and can see the pros and cons of both, but for sheer ease of use Macs win out every time. Plus they're much harder to bugger up than PCs...
