I know the weather looks bleak at the moment and the idea of being out on the water may not seem that appealing ..... but on calm days the water is excellent ...... and when it gets to the balmy days of summer it's fantastic.

If you are already sporty, this could be for you.

I'm afraid you need to be a woman to row in our crew. Sorry.

How often do you train and what sort of fitness level are you looking for?

and how much does it cost?

Reasonable fitness levels - you might cycle or run or use a gym rowing machine on a regular basis. But what is more important initially is being available each week to learn the technique. Good technique makes each stroke more efficient.

We will coach for free. If you decided to commit then you would have to join the rowing club which is £12 a month. We would hope to do around 8 sessions a month on the water as a crew - weather dependent, so this is cheap considering the value of the equipment that we use.

Do you train on particular days? And evenings or in the day?

Saturdays 10am, weekday still to be decided but likely to be Tues start between 6-6.30pm. A full session is approx 2 hours or dusk. But we are a crew not a squad so we sometimes vary as we decide amongst ourselves.

Sounds like a big commitment

We are flexible though. We might now have a crew of 4 for weekday rowing but still have space for a new crew member on Saturdays. It gets a bit addictive once you start. By the way we don't row if it is as rough as it was on Sunday at the boat race.

Generally I need to know stuff below;
From Rotherham it could take you 40 mins to get to Damflask.

Fitness levels are not as important as technique initially, and to get the right technique takes time on the water - so we are looking for someone with time at the weekends and to maybe sub in during the week.

We have another rower who has done a little sculling but is still very much a beginner so we are looking to bring two rowers on through the summer.

What is your height, weight, age ? Rowers are categorised by weight and age. Height gives an idea of stroke length. Flexibility is prob more important than aerobic fitness initially.
Have you done other sports? Can you swim 100 meters in light clothing? Rowers don't wear life jackets, but coxes do.

We've got a couple of new rowers trying out over Easter - but if you are still interested I can put you on a list or recommend other ways that you can get into rowing on water in SY.

Dear all,

In addition to Want_to_row's crew, there is also a Senior Women's Squad at City of Sheffield Rowing club.

If you are an experienced rower at a reasonably high level we would love to hear from you. We ask a lot of commitment (approx 4 sessions a week, land and water) but we expect to win races and pots this season!

If you're interested please get in touch and I will give you more details.
