PARK HOUSE SCHOOL

Hi,

Did anybody go to Park House School?, it has closed down now. It was on Bawtry Road in Tinsley. Would love to hear any old stories from the past. I left in 1990 myself, had five great years there. It closed down soon after that. Will be waiting to hear your stories, bye for now.

Regards,
Ash

:hihi: What school?

Woodhouse Grammar School, after Kiveton Park Primary and Junior schools, and left WGS in ... 1957, I think.

Since closed, and those from the outer villages moved to other schools.
The ole school was still being used for some college classes when I visited a couple of years ago..2004..strange thing is the school looked smaller than I remember back in the 60s..I played football for Kiveton youth club with DAVID CLARK back then too..my biggest achievement at Woodhouse was not getting kicked out.. oh well that was then and I have great memories of the school and old friends..mike hayes

I'm Sheffield born & although I left when I joined the Royal navy in 1949 it's still my home town. My junior school was Hatfield House Lane, then Firth Park Grammar, the red caps, when I last visited 2yrs ago it had been flattened. In 1946 I trasferred to the city Technical School, now derelict. I joined the RN as a Stoker, When I retired from the RN I was an Engineer Lieutenent. My Sheffield schooling did me well!

I visited my old schools 2 yrs. ago. Horror, Firth Park a demolition site, the Tech. still there but derelict, a sad sight.

Me too. Started at Lydgate Infants 1948 and left King Teds Xmas 1959. My teacher for the last couple of years at Lydgate was Mr Savile. He may have still been there when you attended. I remember Messrs Ainsworth, Doughty, Mrs Pollard and Misses Wagstaff and Urquhart. And Mrs Black from the Infants.
Edit. Just seen you on another thread. You knew Ronald Peck, the Head.

yes, that's right!!! Mr Peck retired about 1976 from Lydgate Middle - I got his autograph before he left....(!!!) I don't know any of the names you suggest except there was a Miss Wagland - she taught my mother as well, about the late 1930s/early 1940s, so I'm guessing she was still there when you were, she taught spelling and sewing and the 2 things we can both do are Spell and Sew!!!!! Hi Blitzer,Not sure when the cane went in Sheffield but I know it was still being wielded by Miss Roberts quite a few years later. Before it died out completely in England I think it was around at least to the end of the 50's.
Getting my sums wrong and opening my mouth were the reasons I got it and everyone in the class too at some time. She used to stand behind the blackboard and we would stand in a queue for our turn!I left in 1947
Now you must be a Sharrow boy.I lived in Mount St

Hi Eileen,
I certainly am a Sharrow boy,and I was pleasantly surprised to find you used to live in Mount Street. Crikey! I lived in Ashley Road, with the back entrance to the house in Mount St. Sadly Ashley rd was demolished many years ago and replaced with a block of flats, but one side of the old Mount St still survives. I had three friends who lived in Mount St. Have you had a look at the district courtesy of Google Earth? Never seen so much greenery. Mount St stands out quite well. I have'nt been for some years now. You put me to shame by visiting so often from so far. Which side of Mount St did you live?

Went to Woodthorpe infants' and juniors' 1944 to 1950 and then on to Nether Edge Grammar 1950 to 1956. Moved away from Sheffield in 1959 when called up for national service. My siblings and mother still live in the area.

My friend Pat asks me to post about Newfield School, and her memories of going there.
She says
"I was one of the very first pupils there, in the first year, when it opened, in 1959. I was in class 1P, and my teacher was Miss Cawood. The headmistress was Miss Topliss (who, I think, married and became Mrs Tully.)

In winter, as we girls had to walk down the long drive past the boys' school, we got pelted by snowballs. They used to dig a trench through the snow, and it was like walking through a corridor, with high walls of snow.

I remember the gales of '62, and part of the roof of the boys' school coming off. We were sent home early , and had to walk down the drive in "fours" linking arms, so as not to be blown away.

One girl got blown over, and lost all her schoolbooks. She was blown down a bank, and had to cling on to the goalposts on the football pitch. "

ALLEN look at thread Grammar schools in 1950, I attended the RED CAPS in 1945-6 before going to the Central Tech. Recently I visited Sheffield and went for a nostalgic look at Firth Park. It was just a building site, when was it finally closed. I was also hoping to take a photo ,alas not possible, do you happen to have one. My paternal grandma lived in the corner house opposite the school ,if we kicked a ball into her garden my mates used to send me to get it back, we never did , she had a cupboard full of balls.

Yes I saw Mr Edley in Tescos on Berkley Precinct a couple of years ago.

I remember Mrs Carr & Miss Needle she always wore a shorter than short skirt all the time, she was a PT teacher for the girls.
I remember her very well, I scratched my back with a ruler & she called me out to the front & caned me with the thickest cane in the school, that hard she dislocated my fingers & I was in agony for months, if it was today maybe I could have sued her for gbh.

Micky Schofield was another mate of mine, he was one of the last 'Little mesters' left in the city, I don't know if he's still working tho'.
He was the best long distance runner in the school & I was the worse, so when we set off I used to jump on his back to slow him down, it used to give us a giggle.

Hi Dozey..... I knew all those you mentioned, as I recall 'Biff' was a gentle giant, we once squared up for a fight but thank goodness it never took off.
Barry was in my class all thro' school, nice kid.
John Radford, I never got on with him at all, sorry to hear he's not well.
Neville seemed to grow up quicker than us & yes he did seem to have acne at the time.
I knocked about with Bernard for a while after we left school but then footie took up most of his time & that wasn't for me, when he retired from 'the funny old game' he bought a pub & I used to go & see him there but not seen him for years.
Do you remember Ian Smith, he was very overweight, which I think was a genetic disorder, a really nice kid, he committed suicide just after he left school, I don't think he could stand the jibes & jokes about his weight, poor kid, he was a good friend.
Terry Christian, George Priest, Allan (Mutch) Miller, Ronald Baldwin, Tommy Purcell, Mickey Taylor who was knocked down & killed at 16, these were all very close mates of mine & who were the two twins that lived off Adlington Rd?

Graham Kayler (now dead), Cyril Putland, Barry Bagshaw, Johnny Corcker, John Chalford, Johnny Ratcliff, Ron Bradshaw, Ron Mottershed....... ok I'll stop now.

Some girls I remember were Margaret Duffin (aah bless), Irean Weaver, Joan Priest, Linda Rushby, didn't John Radford marry her?

Right here we go then, girls names i remember, yes Margaret Duffin poor lass dint she get bullied, i seem to remember she always looked sad or upset,Irene Weaver, faintly remember that name, remember Joan Priest as i don't think we got on very well, other girls i remember are Pauline Green,Brenda Broughton and going back to juniors Daisy Marshall? is the surname correct, anyway i remember she died very young god bless her.Don't remember Linda Rushby,Graham Kaylor,Johnny Corker,John Chalford,Ron Mottershed,George Priest or John Ratcliffe.Do remember Ronnie Baldwin, good lad, also remember Terry Christian,(was his nickname Charlie),he used to bully me occasionally,Allan Miller,Cyril Putland an old mate, and Ian Smith, yes he did kill himself poor lad, must have been all of 17 years old,his brother Rodney married Cyril Putland's sister Sandra. There is at least one other name i'm missing and iv'e just remembered the surname, been racking my brain all day trying to remember, his sister was called Valerie Newsome but i can't remember his first name, was it Mick? maybe you can recall, and the surname Furnace/Furness. And the twins lived on the same road as me,Adlington Crescent, they were Trevor and Victor Yellott,Cyril Putland and Alan Miller also lived on the crescent as did Ian Smith.Oh and yes i remember Tommy Purcell as well, good kid.Do you remember Douglas Wright,Jack Grant,Dennis Hyatt, Malcolm West.??? Bennett.I wish my memory was as good as yours, lost a lot of brain cells since our schooldays, dint have that many to start with.If i remember any more names i'll let you know.Just remembered more names,Brian Clarkson,Ken Dickinson,Alan Peacock.

Hi again Dozey...... thanks for all those names, I remember most of them.

Pauline Green lived near me, her brother was on the back of a motor bike coming back from Fox Hill & they crashed, his mate was killed & Pete was never the same.
Joan Priest was one of a family of 10 girls & 2 boys, her sister Sandra, at about 13 fell in the hot bath & received 1st degree burns, suffered badly & never came out of hospital & died a few years later, Joan was my 1st girlfriend.
Brenda Broughton had a crush on me but I was always too shy.
Lynda Rushby was the school stunner, I think she became a beauty queen, we used to go out together & hang around with Trev & Vic Yellot & thier girlfriends.
Johnny Corcker was from the grocery family.
Another kid second name Bradshaw who owns a friut business.
John Chalford owns the CC Cleaning Company.
Graham Kayler lived opposite St Bernards church, him & his mates were playing with a weejee board & brought spirits into his mums house, they had to exorcise the house because strange things were happening, one of his mates went loopy because of it & Graham went off the rails & died of a drug overdose, aged about 30.
I called Terry Christian 'Chuck'.
Douggie Wright lived at the bottom of Adlington Rd right on the corner, another good kid & Jack Grant.
Malc West..... we knocked about together for years.
BC, KD, AP... yes I remember them all.
The Heath family lived on Symons Crescent, we went to school with the son who now owns the funeral company, he was a quiet kid, a bit too posh for us.
Mickey Taylors dad had the only car on Parson Cross at the time, we all used to just stare at it, in amazement.

Eee memories....... & my memory is not the same either, I'm suprised I managed to bang this lot out.

Keep in touch Dozey.

I'm at it again Dozey.

Graham Sargent, a bit older than me, I think he was in the music business.
Little Lynne Bradshaw, I think she died young.
The O'brian family, The Walker family, The Bensons..... I used to work with 'Benny', he came to work with a 'chain letter' & one of the lads destroyed it, next day Benny's wife dropped dead.
Gerald Cotton lived next door to Pauline Green.
David Ward became a milkman.
Mick Williams a brainy guy.
Graham Metcalf who nearly burnt his mothers house down.
Chris Lee, now a bus driver.
Another friend, not sure of his name, nice kid, his mum was going out with an american soldier, he stabbed her to death in his sleep, but did not know he'd done it, the kid's mum woke him up dripping in blood, told him to call for help, then she dropped dead, he ran to our house, which was a few streets away, I remember his face when I opened the door to him, my dad ran to the phone box over Southey Hill to call the police.

All these kids were around my age.

Sorry for being a bit morbid but these memories stick out in my mind.

Hi datal.
The name Sargent rings a bell but i don't remember Lynne Bradshaw but the name Bradshaw sounds familier,i remember Margaret O'Brian though, didn't she have ginger hair? Walker and Benson don't sound familier,Gerald Cotton, was his nickname Bobbin.Do you remember Lewis Major,i used to know a relative of his when i frequented the 5 Arches pub about 10-12 years ago.
Yes i remember David Ward and Mick Williams,Graham Metcalf didn't he hang around with Gerald Cotton and Graham Holt, they were younger than me by a year or two i think,a friend of my neighbour told me Graham Holt died a few years ago.Chris Lee,yes, i was always reminded of him in later years when ever a Dracula film was shown due to him having the same name as the guy who played Dracula.Since you mentioned someone being around your age,how old are you?i was 62 in January.
PS.You said Chris Lee IS a bus driver,do you know if he still is?also i remember Jack Grant being a bus driver but that would be about late 60s early 70s?Don't remember the lad who's mother was stabbed. Also didn't Malc West work on the buses, never saw him after we left school but John Radford told me he used to be a bus conductor,he also said he'd got a bit thin on top.

Hi Dozey.
Graham Sargent lived on Symons Crescent I'm sure he was in a band.
Next door they had one of those Chow dogs with a purple tongue, it used to growl every time you went near it, I was frightened to death of the thing.
Lynne Bradshaw lived next door to those with the 'devil dog', she was a slip of girl, always ill bless her, I think she died & thinking about it now, she may have had Cystic Fibrosis, but they didn't know about it in those days.
Graham Metcalf was a bit rotund & lived on Falstaff opposite Mickey Williams.
Tommy Purcell lived down there, I remember his father-in-law came screaming to my dad when he got stung by a wasp on his bottom lip & with his mouth dribbling expected my dad to suck out the poison. (bless)

Bradshaws had that friut shop on Chaple walk, I never got on with the bloke & often saw him when I went past the shop, but I never bought anything there, I don't think Lynne was related to him.
Gerald Cotton had a three wheeler trike, I was really jealous, so I knocked about with him just so I could ride about on it, he was always spoilt.
Graham Holt lived near me, Graham Cole lived opposite to them, his mum was a right character.
I used to see Chris Lee often years after, as I was a bus fitter at Leadmill garage, he was always a nice guy, he may not be a driver now tho'.
My memory of Jack Grant was that we used to go sledging together at Longley Park, I remember those days, when it was often thick with snow for weeks.
The lad & his mum who was stabbed used to come round to our house when they first moved into the area, she was so proud of the GI she was going out with, until he killed her, I don't know what happend to the poor lad afterwards, I was about 13 at the time.
I knocked about with Malc West a few years after we left school, I'm not sure if he worked on the buses tho'..... maybe he did.

You are slightly older than me I'm affraid...... by a month!!! I'm a very YOUNG 62 in a weeks time...... Uhh!!! don't remind me.

Thanks Dozey for exercising my brain too..... maybe we're not as forgetful as we thought we were.
All the best to you in the future.

Keep in touch...... Datal

Dozey I'm sure we'll know each other & thanks for stirring the memories.

I knew a Ron Baldwin from Sheffield who lived in Australia , How old would your Ron Baldwin be ??????

I went to Firshill Infants and left in 1977 when my family moved to South Wales. I only have vague memories (being eight at the time) but my teacher was called Mrs Jackson and I think there was also a teacher called Mrs McGrath who had a daughter Julia. There were girls called Yasmin and Melanie (surnames escape me) and Joanna Stephenson I think, and boys called Jonathan Hill, Nigel Worne (?) and Russell Bedford.

I still have family living in Kirton Road and in Swallownest and Brinsworth.

If anyone else left the top school in that year I'd love to hear from you.

I started school in Sept 1950 at Pomona St , we had a great teacher called Miss Lofthouse who was a right little so & so but we all remember her. I passed my eleven plus & went to Nether Edge Grammar for the first year then we all upped sticks and went to Abbeydale Boys' Grammar. We had some amazing teachers who still stay fresh in my memory as though it were yesterday.Rabbi the scripture master, Charlie Simpson the french master who used to dish out the slipper a lot but we all liked him. I left in 1962. Howard Wilkinson went to our school & was a great footballer but a right miserable git, he didn't change much as a bloke.

I don't think i've got any pics but i'll look. i know the walk you mention i used to go down to manor park centre on that path. the special school that you mention if it's what i think. it was some pre-fab buildings behind the juniors that we knew as the annex it was where the kids who were a bit SLOW were put. most of them that went in there were trouble causers, the playing fields are still there albeit a bit overgrown, the canteen is now a workshop. when you walked up spring lane to your right was an oap's home called hillcrest that shut down and is now a young offenders place, it used to be a good area but not any more

According to Google Earth , the special school section is still there . It is the long narrow part of the building ( south end ?? ) with a separate playground . The playground would have been between the juniors and senior buildings . I'll see if I can find my pics although they are of class photos and don't show much of the school .

The playground would have been between the juniors and senior buildings . I'll see if I can find my pics although they are of class photos and don't show much of the school .

as i look at the pic from google the school is like hmmm 2 flags at about 90deg canteen top left i'm assuming then that you are referring to the left flag pole, the play ground we called the top yard ,the rooms were the cookery room and the woodwork room with 2 sets of double doors leading out onto the top yard the set on the left opened out onto steps where a water fountain was put . hope you understand what i mean.
p.s. if you type into google brimmesfield road uk. you will get the view that i'm looking at

Exactly , that used to be the special school , for kids with physical handicaps . I may be incorrect , but I think the special school closed in 1956 . I had heard that it was used for cookery and woodwork at a later date .

Woodhouse West Primary 53 to 59 then on to Brincliffe Grammar 59 to 64.
Didn't realise until I discovered this site that Brincliffe was only open for 5 years I was there...came across article written by Peter Spinks thanks to this forum.
