1975-1977 - Nether Green 1st
1977-1981 - Nether Green Middle
1981-1983 - King Edward Lower
1983-1985 - COLDITZ (aka King Edward Upper)

All in all, and with that wonderful benefit of hindsight, I enjoyed school. Infact, sometimes I wish I was still there, but with the PC brigade of today I probably wouldn't fit in....

And even if it did, it would probably be seperate changing rooms for PE etc so it wouldn't be anything to get your hopes up for.

I was at Greenlands until 1984 (part of which got set on fire by one of the support staff, apparently!); Waltheof until 1988 (which was later famously torched); and then Stradbroke College (at the old Richmond College/Brook School sites, which were vandalished and then demolished...)

Still makes me shudder to think of a teacher at Greenlands called (I think) Mr Albaya - a really large guy, with the longest finger nails, that he would stick in your neck for no reason! Like a human version of Wolverine...

It's wiered because apparently she went to the same junior school as me (Todwick J&I) but I just can't picture her face. Her name does sound familiar though. So when did you leave then? Would you have been there whilst I was there? Was that guy the one who had a massive painting of himself in the dining hall?

2cnd copy

Have mentioned this elsewhere in the forum, but still have not seen my school mentioned: Hadfield House Lane Sec Mod.
I left there in 1960.
First school was Beck Road Juniors (Shiregreen) which has been mentioned by someone else earlier in the topic.

LOVED school as I am a hog for knowledge (still) and realised that sooner or later I would be out spending time doing work that I might not enjoy, simply to get money and that this free, (to me) access to information was therefore not going to last. `Make hay` etc.

Had a couple of `interesting`, teachers - like `Killer` Willock, an ex javelin thrower, with a short fuse and a love of using his knuckle to hammer one in the temple with it in cadence with the list of errors you had committed.. and a manner of speech that included `blessed`. ie " I`ll throw you through the blessed window you blessed worm". He had a V shaped scar in the centre of his forhead that turned red(ish) with anger so you had warning.
He had a fist fight finally with a quiet spoken, biggish classmate called Furness ( details available if encouraged generously???) and was gone by the next day. Heard later that he was teaching invisible people in a rubber room.

Music teacher had no chance; Mr Jessop was the victims name. Had to suffer an hour of smuggled in alarm clocks; footy ratchets; bike bells and horns etc etc which were passed around through his futile searches. Best class of the week, but not for him, poor bloke. Where I learned about group dynamics and anarchy. I believe they sent him to Hinde House in 58 or 59, as woosies were more his style. (writer grins boyishly)

Miss Meehan, English star teacher; Mr Jennings, Geography; 'Reich', Marshall was in charge of 'Early Introduction to Fascism, Mind Control and the Joys of Creating Pain in Defenseless Smaller People', believe he had 5 types of cane.

BTW. Sheffeld seems to have accumulated property in the 38 years since I left.. Isle of Wight..Cumbria..talk about encroachment.. ;)D

Still miss the place...but now I hear Blair has given you 1984!!
The I.D. card and retina scans...oh dear me!

Hi jayjay,

Just working out the numbers and it seems I could have been at Beck around the same time as your rels.
I can smell the aroma of the corridors even now!! (don`t ask me how?) thought it was a lovely smell then and still do.

Is Hadfield(Hatfield??) still of the same name or is that the Firthpark/Brushes to which you refer??

AHA! Headmaster at Hadfield was Mr Postlethwaite, who was a good man and a second one who`s name I have forgotten unfortunately, was also of the `old school`.

I was told a few years ago (via snailmail) that Miss Meehan had gone to live in County Cork, but exact address unknown.

If you can remember the doctors surgery, almost at the corner of Bellhouse and Beck that was owned by Dr Hudson (with two daughters, Penny and Judy) also had a Dr Rapinet as a locum I think...I used to live 3 doors down towards Beck. Neighbours were Mrs Cook, the Rhodes, and Kershaws. No: 1 Beck was Billy Smith I think. Memory is very foggy but there is still hope!!

I have had a look at Beck and Bellhouse and area via Multimap UK, which is on the net and free to use to a degree(or was). Find the place of interest and zoom in then click on the `photo button to see a pretty good aerial `photo of the place.

After Midnight here so will shut up soon for zzzzzeds. 3.30pm your time right?

Thanks for your response jayjay

Hi Pauline
In answer to your PM here is the email Wybourn school sent out.
========================================
Calling all ex-Wybourn pupils!!

We are writing to tell you about an exciting event happening at Wybourn Community
Primary School.

Over the last 2 years, the school has undergone some major refurbishments and as
a celebration of this we are holding a special day of celebrations and memories.

On Wednesday 29th June 2005 we are inviting you as an ex-pupil to come and join
our celebration. The day will start with a guided tour of the school. You are
then invited to join us in the canteen for a school dinner. Rounding off the day
will be a special performance of ‘Wybourn The Musical’ at The Mega Centre on
Bernard Road.

This is a chance for ex pupils to reunite and see how the school has changed and
also to join in the celebrations with Wybourn’s current staff and pupils.

Please reply to tell us what you think about this.

We are keen to involve you in the planning stages of our performance and would
greatly welcome any information you can provide. If you have any memories of the
school that you would be willing to share with us, if you wish to find out more
or just express an interest in attending then please contact us in one of the
following ways:

* Reply to this email
* Email the school directly on enquiries@wybourncommuinity.sch.uk
* Visit the school website on www.wybourncommunity.ik.org
* Write to us at Wybourn Community Primary School
Manor Oaks Road
Sheffield
S2 5ED
(Please address letters or e-mails to ‘Wybourn Reunion Celebration’)

We would be grateful if you could spread the word to any more ex-pupils (or staff)
who you are still in contact with. We will be keeping you updated and sending you
more information on how to get tickets for the event nearer the time.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message and we hope to hear from you
soon.

From all at Wybourn Community Primary School.

Hi Faerie
I started there in 47 and Sister Marie Piiere was head to be replaced by Sister Monica. I remember one or two Sister Marys. no Sister Gerard
The school was run entirely by the Notre Dane Nuns as you say, and they were quite strict. Over the entrance was written Notre dame High School for young ladies and I remember the nuns pointing it out to us scholarship girls. We were taught up in the attics, what I would think had been the serrvants quarters in days gone by.
Was the the big room still called La Salle where we did music and wet weather dancing. And did you have Miss Jowett for music. Still threw chalk and the blackboard rubber did she.
Hi Poppins
Yes we wore bottle green knickers and mine had a posket in. but over them we wore, for gym, pale green dresses so we didn't expose to much. we were the only school to play our netball fixtures in dresses. No wonder I'm so modest now.

Hi Hazel
yes I remember Miss Jowett and yes the salle was still as you remember it when I went there!
yes they were strict and Sister Monica was head when I went. The chalk throwing continued but the teaching in the attics had stopped and they were store-rooms again.
Agamus!

I went to Bluestones Primary School at Norfolk Park till about '74 then to Hillsborough Primary and Middle. Then on to Chaucer which I left in '85. I was pretty disappointed with that as all my friends from Hillsborough were going to Myers Grove. I've always thought that I'd have got a better education if I'd gone there, but reading these posts is making me change my mind!!

Went to buy a pc the other day and got chatting to the lad serving me. He left Chaucer School about 5 years ago and loads of the teachers were still there that taught me! Mr Crowe, Mr Bainbridge etc. Does anyone remember Mrs Marsden?

My first school was Castle Hills near Doncaster (1967 to 1968). I used to get battered by a big girl (6 y.o.) there! She was rough! Escaped to Kiveton Park Infants (Dec 1968 to 1970);the schools on both sides of Station Road. I remember the whole school turning-out to watch the Queen's train pass through Kiveton Bridge Station and watching the Fire Brigade hosing down the front of the "new" school in an exercise. Then to Kiveton Park Meadows Juniors (1970 to Feb 1973). We kids coundn't say all that and called it "Meadow Park". Christmas 1970: I built a nativity scene in the middle of the clock-room floor. The whole class had to walk around it until it was photographed. I think the photo was published in "The Star". 1971: I went head-over-heels in the playground and got concussion. One of my classmates at the time, John Turner, lives just down the road from here, in East Grinstead!
1972; plague of caterpillars on the playing field. My coat peg number in Sept 1970 was 15. In Sept 1971, in a different classroom, by coincidence, it was also 15. That made an impression on me at the time and now one of my Lottery numbers is always 15. My teachers then were Mrs Doncaster, Mrs Ward and Mrs Sharpe. In Feb 1973 my family moved to Burncross and I spent the last term and a half at Windmill Hill Juniors. The standard of education at the new school (Mrs Taylor's class) was in a different league and I found myself out-of-my depth until we moved-up to secondary school at Ecclesfield Comprehensive (1973 to 1978).....
At Ecclesfield Forms: 1R, 2R and 3R (Mrs Bloomfield) and 4C4 and 5C4 (Mr O'Neill). Anybody match these schools and years? Kevin Taylor. PS. I don't know why a smilie face appears where the 8's are in this text!

I went to Meadowhead, left to cross Dyche Lane and enter the college in 1992... and became a resident there for bloody years, much to the chagrin of Halliwell and the other art dept. bods. they were a grand lot, as were some of the teachers at Meadowhead... I actually look back on some of them with an awful lot of fondness, especially Mrs Benham - everyone seemed to hate her, but in all actuality I think she was about the best teacher I ever had :)

Ok, there was also Miss Wilson who taught Humanities back in my first year... damn, she was foxy ;)

Hello everyone, I went to Longley Primary when Miss Patterson was the headteacher. Other teachers I remember were Mr Mason, Mr Shorton, Miss Marriot who loved dishing out the slipper! My friends there were Leslie Tipper, Rosamund Noble, and Anne Wilkinson. I also remember Terence Bacon and Terence Milner who I had a soft spot for as the teachers were always getting at him for things that were not his fault. I remember once bursting into tears when he was being caned for taking a few wax crayons home with him, bless him!:( I left there in 1960 when my father died and I was adopted. I then went to Penistone Grammar School, Manchester Uni and much later Nottingham Trent Uni.
I still love Sheffield and have wonderful memories of the Whit Walk, Millhouses Park and Longley Park. Great times and happy days:clap: I am now 55 years old and would love to return to look round Longley School.:D
