View Full Version : What Media Player Do You Use?
i've always stuck with windows media player and windvd for dvd's
however i find myself putting real media and quicktime on my computer as there seems to be a hell of a lot of people that put videos in that format, then i delete them again as i'm not fond of them and they seem to take up a lot of space.
isnt there a all singing all dancing cross-breed somewhere?
I tend to stick with WMP, but that's because I don't really use it for anything other than playing music. I have Real Player installed, but hardly use it.
I've heard that Winamp is supposed to be good. It can be downloaded from here (http://www.download-it-free.com/winamp4/), but I'm not sure what formats it actually covers.

although im far from a teccie i've heard real player takes up so much resources on your computer that it's a waste of space. That's why I don't have it anymore, it's only quicktime that I seem to end up putting back on after I take it off.
spyro2000 13-02-2006, 08:30 I also tend just to stick with WMP, not because its the best out there, but because I have it and why change, it does the job. Is especially good once you have got all the codecs installed.
Im sure there are all singing dancing players out there. There is a thread somewhere. I will see if I can dig it up.
I use Windows Media Classic, I find it plays better than WMP
It also plays quicktime movs too :)
winamp...just seem to get on with it better, and you can skin it to however you want, so you can make it really tiny :P

So does my WMP ;)
OxenTwins 13-02-2006, 09:05 I use mediamonkey which acts as a plugin for winamp, with the izotope ozone plugin, I do have WMP, quicktime player, , but I use winamp the most.
Phanerothyme 13-02-2006, 11:06 J-Blaze pointed me towards foobar (www.foobar2000.com). The lite install is lesst han a meg. It plays everything audio, and supports winamp DSP. Written by Justin Frankel, (author of Winamp) it does everything winamp does, except better and without the bloat. The heavy install includes mass tagging and multiple rename tools, cd burning tools, line in recording, all audio formats supported (flac/ogg/mp3/aac/wma).
Generally it dumps on the competition from a great height.
For video, I use a dedicated player - frequently the new DivX player.
Bellacboy 13-02-2006, 11:21 I use VLC player. Its free and plays pretty much everything. No spyware either, which puts it ahead of any windows or real player imo.
LesMcQueen 13-02-2006, 12:14 Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative are, erm, alternatives to the Real and Quicktime players (?!?)
They both use Media Player Classic, and are loads better than the bloaty cack they replace.

Winamp - all music related files
Media Player Classic - all video related files
foobar2000 - just for replaygaining my files

Thats what I use  :D
Winamp for music and WMP for video. I do use quicktime as its a good medium for render output withi its support for 32bit stream :)

^^ This. VLC will play just about anything you throw at it, which seems to me to be the kinda thing you'd be lookin' for. You can get it here (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/).
I don't use it that often though...my personal choices are Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/) for video files, and Foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) for audio.
OGG Vorbis files for teh win.
I use Winamp with the WMP Skin - Looks/ Feels like WMP, but with the power of WinAmp
Savannah2 13-02-2006, 22:52 Winamp and VLC player for me,even on my Windoze box i have uninstalled WMP and as for Real player...that belongs in the trash can.
On Debian GNU/Linux i use VLC
SpiderPete 13-02-2006, 22:59 I use winamp, for both songs and films.
I use XMMS (www.xmms.org) and MPD (http://www.musicpd.org) for music, being indexed by Ampache (www.ampache.org)
As for video, Xine (http://xinehq.de) and MPlayer (http://mplayerhq.hu) do for me.
Joel
I use teh software from DivX.com to play most of my video files.
