View Full Version : Car Dealerships
This is going back a few years, and it may have been covered on a previous thread, but can you remember the car dealerships in Sheffield? Here is my list.
Ford had three/four: Autoways at the end of Shoreham Street, next to Kennings; Brook Shaw, on the corner of Union Street/ Norfolk Street and Charles Street (this was before they moved to Gibralter Street) and T.C. Harrison on London Road. Sheaf Motors on Sheaf Street also sold Fords.
Austin was sold by Freeman Oaks, at the top of Fitwilliam Street
Morris/ Riley /Wolsely was represented by the Kenning Group in that huge building at Shoreham Street and Paternoster Row. (later, they sold the full range of BMC cars and British Leyland Products)
Vauxhall (General Motors) were sold by Bentley Brother, in the Wicker and On Savile Street.
Jaguar, Standard and Triumph were sold by Hadfield's at the far end of Brown Street (before they moved to Sharrow Vale)
Rover were sold by Crabtree and Nichols up on Pinston Street, opposite the Peace Gardens and behind on Cross burgess Street(?)
Rootes Products (Hillman/Humber) was sold by Pickfords on Ecclesall Road
Singer was sold by a dealership on Ellen's Street (just off the bottom of the Moor) I think their name was Batty but I'm not sure. Later Singer was taken over by Rootes Group.
Gilders sold Volkswagen in Cambridge Street - before they moved the business to Banner Cross.
I can't remember who sold Jowett Cars or Lanchester.
Have I left any body out ?
Vauxall Turrets - Ecclesall Road
bigbifter 12-02-2006, 22:24 Gilders also sold jowett cars.
they were at cambridge street, john street then banner cross.
Before the war there was a place on Sharrow Vale Road that had been a large commercial laundry. When I was a lad (1936-37) they sold Chryslers.
heeley bridge garage broadfield road sold bmc , bentleys shoreham street reliant .
Marky Baby 13-02-2006, 12:30 I remember "Brocklehursts" on the roundabout at Meadowhead across from the Bernie.
Can't remember what cars they sold though.

I think they were a Ford dealer - at least they were at their branch in Chesterfield.
I am sure Dad bought his first new car from there - it was a Ford Consul - as my grandmother lived in Chesterfield I am not sure whether it woudl have been the Meadowhead branch or the one at Whittington Moor
I thought Brocklehurst's sold Rootes and then Chrylser products. I remember going to their showroom on Whittington Moor in 72/73 to look at a Simca that was being imported by Chrylser. When did they go out of business?

It starting to come back to me...the guy who owned it was Ernest Brocklehurst - during the late 50's and early 60's (which is when Dad bought his car) he had a couple of places in Chestefield and the one at Meadowhead - I think where the petrol station is now. Not sure when that closed down but sometime in the late 60's, early 70's I think. Everything moved to Chesterfield and I think cus of competition from TC Harrison and Brook Shaw they changed dealerships.
By the early 80's they had moved a couple of times and had just one spot in Whittington Moor - dont know the precise date when they finally closed.
jackandclaud 13-02-2006, 19:48 Bentleys had a dealership at Crosspool and Kennings had a dealership at Broomhill, on the road next to the Broomhill Tavern. Pearl Motors on East Bank Road was also an official Rootes dealership - there was still a 'Singer' sign there well into the nineties. If you look up at the right place, near the junction of John St and Bramall Lane you can still see the Gilders VW sign on the end of the building they used. Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but there was a dealership roughly where Staples is at the bottom of the Moor ; in the sixties one half of it was Simca the other was Rolls Royce. Does anyone remember where the Wartburg and Moskvich dealers were in the sixties. My dad always used to consider them when buying new cars (he was a member of the communist party!) then go and buy a Vauxhall anyway.

Brocklehurst's sold Chrysler / Talbot products up till at least the early 80's, I remember my uncle buying a brand new Talbot Horizon from them on the then new A reg plate.
thes_cat_man 04-03-2006, 19:59 D.C Cook had a Datsun/Nissan dealership where the Netto is now stood at Sheffield Lane Top
Broclkehursts were the fisrt car dealers that I can remember advertising on TV in the 60's.

From Brocklehursts of Sheffield"

Ousetunes 07-03-2006, 10:02 Interesting thread:thumbsup:
I remember Bentley's (Vauxhall) showroom on Upper Hanover Street (or is it Hanover Way - where the University tram-stop is between Glossop Road and University roundabout). As you travelled from University roundabout it was on your left, when the road was a single carriageway. It was demolished to make the road into a dual carriageway, I'd guess around 1980.
The Jaguar dealership on Brown Street - Hadfields. My dad owned a Jag or two in his time and I recall going there on a number of occasions. Did it have a second floor showroom also?
Rolls Royce on Peel Street, Broomhill - Kenning? They also had a garage where the Alldays supermarket is now opposite Lloyds TSB. My dad also owned a couple of Rollies and probably got at least one of them from here, as I remember sitting inside one and being incredibly impressed.
Europa Mercedez, bottom of Hanover Way. My dad (you'll see he liked his cars) bought a Mercedez 450SEL in 1978 from a dealership just beyond the Prince of Wales pub, Banner Cross, IIRC.
In 1976 we bought a Toyota Celica from a dealership situated near to where Staples is today (as someone else has rightly pointed out). We also looked at Audi at Banner Cross (which is now a VW dealership?).
It's quite surprising how many of these garages have disappeared. Most of them sold petrol too on their forecourt.
Keep the memories rolling in!
bullerboY 06-04-2009, 22:54 Hoffmans at the bottom of Ecclesall Rd sold Mercs and Rippn bros sold Rollers,Waldot middlewood sold Wartburgs, volvo, rootes,NSU reliant and Volkies.Charlie May on Backfields sold Moscovitch Moorhouse and metcalfe sold a few makes and Credlands Sheffield Lane Top sold Ford as did Terminus Garage at Midlewood which was owned by John Hardy.Standard vanguard was also sold by Sammy Wilsons on West St.

My two cents worth is a bit off the topic. More about cars than dealerships. Anyhow your posting brought bk memories. Our first car was a 1957 powder blue Ford Anglia bought from Brook Shaws. A year or so later, dad traded it in for a used Singer Gazelle. Mahogany dashboard, leather seats. What a car. And it had a Singer engine in it, that being a good thing because they started to put Rootes engines in them after they were taken over. I think it was because maintenance costs were expensive that he eventually traded it in for a new Hillman Minx.
Every July we have a British antique car fair here. Models that I'd forgotten all about. Austin Cambridge, Standard Vanguard, early model Morris Minors. Remember the Morris Cowley? The "Baby Austin" that preceded the mini?

I think the Rootes Group one on Ellin Street you mention was the Deighton Motor Co.
Hillsborough Garage Hillsborough and Bramall Lane
bullerboY 07-04-2009, 18:49 Fred Wilsons on Hanover St sold vauxhall before being took over by Turrett.
My dad bought a brand new Hillman Avenger for £750 from Fred Wilson's in 1972, I think they were somewhere at Hillsborough then. He ran it until 1989!
IRONMONGER 07-04-2009, 19:02 I remember a Chrysler/Hillman/ Simca dealer on Bradfield Road, Hillsborough the name Fred Wilson seems to spring to mind. I remember winning a motoring competion on Radio Hallam sponsored by Wilson's and a group of us being taken to the Rootes factory at Ryton and seeing Hillman Avenger's being made. As I had an Avenger GT at the time I remember drooling over a V8 engined Avenger destined for Brazil.
I also remember Highfield Motors on London Road where I bought my Sunbeam Imp Sport in grasshopper green metallic.
The dealer in Glossop Road , Broomhill was called Hancocks (of Hathersage) I was in their showroom to witness the launch of the Ford Consul Classic.
As a schoolday I was also in the showroom of Ernest Hatfield on Norfolk Street at the back of the Peace Gardens to witness the unvieling of the .......................................JAGUAR E-TYPE !!!!!!!!
Rippon Bros. opposite Ecclesall Church sold Rolls-Royce, this later became Europa.
Joseph Tomlinson, bottom of Eccy Road - Above The Arcade, sold Standard.
Jack Clarke sold Volvo from a shop unit in Berkeley Precinct, also Eccy Road.
bullerboY 07-04-2009, 19:05 Hi escort1 he did have a small hillman dealership there and a repair shop at the bottom of herries rd.
IRONMONGER 09-04-2009, 18:57 How can we have forgotten Portland Autos on West Bar. I believe they sold cars from the eastern bloc before becoming the countries first Datsun (Nissan) dealer. I believe that I learnt to drive on one of the first Datsuns in Britain at Broomhill Driving School. It was a Datsun 1200 and sold for £888.
Another dealership I forgot was Sandygate Motors, when I was 13 my Dad went to look at a Morris Minor Estate (woody).
mally350z 09-04-2009, 22:03 Burton House (part of Dixon Motors) sold Rolls Royce down Attercliffe , later became Reossi selling motor bikes , was going to be dixon bikes , but didnt sound quite right does it !!
dicks on bikes
mally350z 09-04-2009, 22:08 central motors on scotland street , did mitsibushi .
machon bank motor co. did suzuki
Beesa rider 10-04-2009, 10:34 Sheaf Motors, mentioned earlier, were an official Ford Dealer at their Dyches Lane Garage at Coal Aston .
I well remember the Ford Capri arriving there "The Car You've Always Promised Yourself" circa 1968. To wet the appetite for the revolutionary new fastback design the advance brochure contained a cut out cardboard version of the car.
The first batch were kept hidden away for a day or 2 leading up to the launch but I, as an inquisitive 17 year old petrol head, found them under wraps in the old shed at the back of the garage.
Do you remember John Mason on city road, he bought a load of anglias to make a hire fleet, then had a load of reprobates driving them back from Dagenham I suppose, about 1964
andrejuan 11-04-2009, 16:18 I remember back in the 80s, I sold my car to a chap who came down from N.Yorks. He got chatting and it turns out he was one of the founders of Autoways (I think) He said it was the first dealership to offer hire purchase on new cars. He told me the whole history of him and two others getting started and growing it into a national dealership with branches all over the UK. They were responsible for allowing ordinary people to buy new cars. They sold it in the 70s for a couple of million (a lot in those days). He retired to spain and went into property just at the right time, one of the others started the Black book, and I can't remember what the third one did. He was getting on by the time I met him and had retired back to England. I'll always remember him turning up dripping in gold and driving a Rolls Royce. He said he wanted my car to take to his holiday home in Spain.
Bentleys had a dealership at Crosspool and Kennings had a dealership at Broomhill, on the road next to the Broomhill Tavern. My dad always used to consider them when buying new cars (he was a member of the communist party!) then go and buy a Vauxhall anyway.
Palmer Road garage were the agents for Wartburge and Moskvich also Saab , after we stopped dealing in Ford.
mally350z 13-04-2009, 15:45 Bentleys had a dealership at Crosspool
where was this ?
IRONMONGER 13-04-2009, 19:04 Another dealer we forgot - B.J.? Williams on both sides of Abbeydale Road, I think it is now Moonlight Textiles. They must have been Morris dealers because my dad bought a brand new Morris Minor Traveller there in 1960, reg. number 4501 WA.
He also bought a new Morris Oxford Estate in 1967. reg. number OWE749E, from Shukers of Sheffield. I think they were on Duke Street, probably now somewhere under Sheaf Square!
Of course Brocklehursts, of Chesterfield, also had an art deco style Rootes showroom at Meadowhead - now the filling station opposite The Norton.
I also think that the Blue Star Garage on Ecclesall Road at Banner Cross, currently a Texaco filling station, had a showroom selling Ford.

So can anybody remember the Datsun dealers on London road, where the old petrol station is now, which again is closed and is now a car sales pitch.
I remember going to the site in the late 60s when i was a kid, they were just demolishing the garage and i managed to salvage an aluminium Datsun sign that hung on my bedroom wall for many years.
The garage that stood where Staples is now also had a branch on Leeds Road Attercliffe, they also sold/serviced Rootes products there but also sold Commer trucks there.
They were originaly called DEIGHTONS, then became PICKFORD DEIGHTONS, then just PICKFORDS.
Ahh the memories keep flooding back......
Forgot to mention, Bentleys had a branch on Abbeydale rd, bottom of St.Ronans Road, sold Bikes and Reliants, they had the workshop/garage round the back of the shop.
We used to throw bangers under the Reliants on display coming up to Bonfire night and watch the cars rock as they went off.
Pretty stupid thing to do i spose, but we were kids....
Have a look at these Falls. 1939.

Mrs H Solo 02-12-2009, 12:03 Well this thread has been a trip down memory lane for me. My first job at 16 was as Office Junior at Ernest W Hadfield, 1/7 Sydney Street. I then moved onto work in the Motor Taxation Office when it was based at the back of the Town Hall (memory prevents me remembering the road name) before it moved to Hartshead behind the Telegraph and Star.
Happy days, we didnt know people by their name, just the name of the garage, made some great friends through that job on both sides of the counter. My mate used to fancy the guy from Somalia Garage, and we met him one night in Scamps or Josies and we approached him and said "dont you work for Somalia Garage" and he said "I am Somalia Garage" which became a catch phrase of ours for years to come, when people came across too big for their boots!

Hello,
I recently bought a car which was originally dispached to Ernest Hatfield on Norfolk Street. It is a Triumph Vitesse 2l MKII convertible, original colour was "New White ". This car was produced in November 1968 and dispached on 22.November 1968 to E.W. Hatfield.
The MKII version was produced from autumn 1968 on - it was brand new on the market at this time and I believe that the car might be sold in spring 1969. So there is a chance that someone remebers a lovely convertible standing for months in the showroom.
The car is now, after 10 years in Holland, moved further to Mainz / Germany where I'm about to bring it back on the road.
Anyone remembers it?:help:

My Mum and dad bought their first car an escort in the 70's and then a Fiesta either late 70's early 80's they used TC Harrison London Road and Brook Shaws near West Bar / Shalesmoor?
westmoors 22-10-2010, 09:18 Hi to FALLS and all the other contributers to car dealerships. I know the posts are quite old but I only found this site by accident when traling through Google the other day and being an ex pat from Sheffield now living in the south of England for the past 40 odd years it stirred some long forgotten memories as I was in the motor trade ( among other things ) for most of my working life . My first job as a 14 yrs old boy was at Brook Shaw Union Street and I was there when Brook Shaw himself was still alive ! I remember he died on a visit to the Ford plant at Dagenham sometime around 1945/6 collapsing on the loading jetty after the tour around the plant, the garage staff had been treated to the trip by him and I believe by Ford as well. Just after WW2 cars coming in for repair were still much more primative being mostly of the 1930's vintage, there were a very small trickle of new cars coming in but the wating list for a new car could run into 2 or 3 years as most went for export to pay our debts, ( how familliar this sounds again ) and even then for a couple of years the new ones still had the same basic engines and suspensions of their predecessors all very primative by modern day standards and so were working practice as I remember, I think there were a few lorries being produced but again all we saw were mostly old ones ! Ford had a clever and probably economical method of producing engins in those days, a basic 4 cylinder side valve design simply scaled up in size from 8 to 10,then 12 and finally 14 HP and reliying on the ex lincoln motors V8 in 24 and 30 hp versions, and they were side valve as well ! Happy day ? well looking back through the usual haze of nostalgia I think so. westmoors
PaymePal 22-10-2010, 22:06 Abbey Garage at Abbeydale Rd Sth bottom of Twentywell sold Renault in the 80's, think they were called Abbey 83. Gordon Lamb at Totley Rise sold Daihatsu, it's now a vets. Woodleigh in Holmesfield sold Reliant and it's now a block of flats. Machon Bank Motor Co sold Lancia until they rusted their way out of Britain, it's now a supermarket. Woodseats Motor Co were sited where KFC now is and i think they sold all makes nearly new...
Else Sports Cars were on City Rd where the car wash now is and was a caravan dealership before that, Geoff Battle was on London Rd and sold and leased Lotus.

There was a dealership on Broadfield Road, the name of which escapes me. I think it was next door to Arnold Laver and they sold very droolable AC cars.

No one seems to have mentioned Leo's Car Mart. I can't remember the name of the Road, but The Empire was across the street from it. Leo sold large American gas guzzlers.

oldrowley 10-01-2011, 16:58 Can anybody confirm there was a Singer ( pre Rootes) dealership on Ellin Street. I think the boss was William Batty.
Batty's definitely had a Singer dealership on Ellin Street circa 1950. My dad had a 1939 Singer 9 Bantam which he had serviced there and we received a nice free standing calendar from them each year. The car was sold in 1951 and I don't know of Batty's history thereafter.
mally350z 10-01-2011, 18:14 Was it Towngate Motors or something like that?
i think it was , sure they sold datsun there first then hyundai , then it closed and some one had there entire collection of ferraris in the window
Not a dealership but does anyone remember Intake Motor Auctions near the Woodthorpe Arms, it was run by a bloke called Booly i believe, i remember one day about 1960 he had a 1949 Triumph Roadster told me it was mine for fifteen quid ,British racing green, Dicky seats;massive chrome headlamps. My mother told me if i brought that load of scrap home i was out.Happy days.
I remember the auctions behind the Woodthorpe Arms from the mid to late 1950's. I occasionally had a walk round but never managed to afford anything. Surprising really because there was quite a lot of crap going through, as well as the good stuff. These were the days before the MOT and almost anything would sell so long as it could be described as "a runner".

scallywags 30-03-2011, 05:45 Could get a car for 10/- on a Saturday at intake motor auctions.
Does anyone remember Sheaf Motors the original Honda dealers on Sheaf Street where the traffic Island is now? N360's a 500 and the s800 sports.
Chalky-1951 26-05-2012, 19:58 Machon Bank Motor co. was a lancia dealer. Bruce Dickinson was the owner. If the name rings a bell its because his son is Bruce Dickinson, the front man with Iron Maiden
neepsendlane 26-05-2012, 22:23 Another dealer we forgot - B.J.?
B.J. Williams were also M.G. dealers I remember them having the last T.F. in the showroom on Abbeydale Rd alongside the brand new Twin Camm M.G.A,
the M.G.A. was a lime green colour and I still dream about that car to this day .
westmoors 27-05-2012, 08:21 Does anyone know anything about D ( Derck ? ) Burnand of Totley or the firm, Dereck was a motor dealer and servicing garage.
If it's the same man I worked with him at Brook Shaw ( Ford Dealer ) after he was demobbed from the army in about 1947, he started on his own by buying an army surplus car at the government auctions, doing it up and selling it when there was a 2 to 3 year waiting list for new cars as everything was going for export due to our very serious financial situation just after WW 2, ( sounds very familiar with today's situation doesn't ? ).
