A friend of mine recently bought a £600 item from ebay (as if I haven't told people to stay away from that site enough! ) using his Mastercard and Paypal. The item was supposed to be next day receipt and was not received next day. After exchanging emails with the seller ($the_dealer$), who claimed to be waiting for the money to credit his bank account before he would send the item- he calmed down. A week plus later, he gets an email saying "I am the real $the_dealer$ and had my laptop stolen blah, blah, blah and someone has been listing items under my account on ebay. I am so sorry about this. Please file a report with Paypal and you will get your money back."
My friend does this and Paypal give the seller 10 days to come up with the money. Meanwhile $the_dealer$ makes his feedback private and lists more of the items!
I advised my friend to contact Mastercard, which he did and they told him that it is UP TO PAYPAL(?!). Now, having been a seller on ebay, one of the reasons I stopped was because of the number of fraudulent chargebacks via. credit cards that people were able to do. Now, if they could(!) why can't my friend??
So, my question is to anyone who has successfully initiated a chargeback using Mastercard, how did you do it? Was my friend wrong to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but (should he have said something differently)? Does it matter on the advisor you get? Can he get his money back? Is there any point calling the police? In short, :help:
