Was reading that a man kept a tin of chicken for 50 years, and when he opened it, it was perfectly alright.Dont think I could have eaten it.When I was a child we were quite poor,as my mom was a widow. She used to store tinned stuff in the pantry, and never let us eat it,as she said she was keeping it for a "rainy day" Years went by,until till eventually all the tins went rusty and we had to throw them away. All that lovely stuff wasted !

I know someone on the forum who bulk buys fresh meat and fish when they are reduced in price, and freezes them. Saves loads of money.....or so you might think. :suspect:
I did a little experiment once, and put a date label on some of the purhases that went in the freezer. That was in 2001. Last summer, four years later, most of it was thrown away, having remained in the freezer all that time. I hate waste like this!
Note to 1 Forummer: Are you reading this? 'Cos I've labelled some new purchases in your freezer..... and will be checking up on you! :suspect:

If I remember in the same article there was a bit about the randomness of food preservation and how it could go from a couple of months to a couple of years as it was before the food industry had use-by dates etc. I still reckon the old boy should get a thumbs up for having the cajones to eat the damned stuff , personally, I'd not touch i with a ten foot barge pole!
Mainly buy fresh when I can and use it quite quickly.... always keep some tinned in but look for the eat by date before I use it and I don't keep freezer stuff for longer than 3 months.

Thanks Jake01
Note to the same aforementioned 1 forummer (see my previous post): You've got 6 weeks left to unfreeze and cook 8 joints of beef, a side of salmon, two dozen pork chops and a leg of lamb! :hihi:
The can goods can be kept for well over a yr or two, pretty much same with DEEP freeze although i've know folk to eat after six.I buy half a pig & quarter beef at a much cheaper rate than buying few p'ds at a time.Itry to leave room for my fall veggies, and could live for yrs fm that freezer, our kitchen frig- freezer will be much warmer and i wouldn't keep meat in it for more than 3 months
I had some dried pasta last night, macaroni to be accurate, and noticed that the best before date was 2003.
Ate it with no second thoughts, I mean how can pasta possibly go off, its practically inert until cooked.
