View Full Version : Hillsborough..Boring is not the word
I see yet another hairdressers has opened in hillsborough...how many is that now...along with numerous estate agents...banks...what a dire "shopping centre"there is nothing there to look around...god only knows why people go there....its crap
spotty dog 22-11-2011, 11:01 Where has the hairdressers opened up?

Here we go again.....
spooferman 22-11-2011, 11:13 we have a poundland, crap converters. wilco. and the Deepend chav bar
WallBuilder 22-11-2011, 11:15 I was over there last week and seemed to notice plenty of shops other than hair dressers or estate agents. I was actually going to Taplins the computer shop and as I wasn't sure where that was I had to wander round a bit. So two things I noticed was the pavements need widening especially where there are bus stops or the tram stop as those areas were crowded. I know this can't happen but it would be nice. I also noticed a lot more traffic but again not a lot I can do about peoples single minded determination to congest the roads One other minor issue about the various pelicans was duly pointed out to the relevant council department.
Shef_Fitness 22-11-2011, 11:21 I think Hillsborough is really good, a good fruit shop, good butchers and manns for fish.
The only downside is that its not brilliant for parking. Its OK when there are not many shoppers (not good for shopkeepers), but when its busy its hard to park up.
ampersand 22-11-2011, 11:37 Where has the hairdressers opened up?
It's moved into the old Flower Bowl florists shop (which moved next door)
I must admit I only go to Hillsborough for the video shop nowadays, and I don't do that as often as I used to, not since I signed up for the likes of Lovefilm, and all the good movies are on DVD/Blu Ray and even Sky within 3 months of their Cinema release anyway, and Blockbuster's Xbox game rental shelves are very limited, I've either got or had most of their rental stock before.

I have to laugh at the irony of someone called Fitness moaning that there's nowhere to park a car.
Don't forget the many charity shops as well. I'm all for helping the local shops but there is nothing worth going to Hillsborough for anymore.
HarmOKnee 22-11-2011, 13:04 New scarves & bag shop opened in precinct. Lovely lovely handbags!!!!

You should have stopped typing after the word "nowadays"

do they do Prada? Only someone was asking about them on here the other day?

I shop in Hillsborough once a week, and apart from Home Bargains, I have to agree with you that there are too many, of the same type of shops.
I dont mind it around hillsborough for the most part, although there are quite a few of the same type of shops I will agree!.. but theres home bargains, blockbusters, theres another video/game place across the way, wilcos, poundland, butchers, fruit shop, sweet shop, co-op, morrisons, boots, this new bag shop (not that i need one lol), shoe shops, theres the clothing sections in co-op (burtons? etc), peacocks under precinct and in morrisons, chippys, mobile phone shop, pc shop, a fair range really.
fox20thc 22-11-2011, 15:56 You want to know whats in Hillsborough go see here

You want to know what the website is all about?
See what the local traders say (http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/shoppers_are_urged_to_use_local_stores_1_3950168)
indiechick 22-11-2011, 16:21 Personally, I think Hillsborough needs another cafe/coffee shop
The hairdressers, charity shops and cafes are there because those are the businesses who have chosen to locate in Hillsborough. You can't force businesses to set up in a suburb because that's what you'd like to see.
Perhaps if the people complaining stopped shopping on the internet and bought from local shops, we might see more traders wanting to lease premises in Hillsborough. They're not going to go where they can't make a profit.

I go there to draw money, buy houses, and have my hair cut. Then I nip back to Wisewood shops for other items. There always seem to be outsiders baffled by the array of emporia, possibly the best suburban shopping centre based in Yorkshire(according to a poll of Hillsborough traders)
Personally, I think Hillsborough needs another cafe/coffee shop
Have u been in rubys cafe really nice food and good value for money ? Also freshly ground coffee.
Ms Macbeth 22-11-2011, 21:41 Personally, I think Hillsborough needs another cafe/coffee shop
Ha ha! :hihi:
Its one of the things that has improved since I moved here. I used to meet friends in Jalucy's before it changed to a diner. Now its usually Buttercup on Taplin Rd. The scones are to die for, the chocolate brownies likewise.
I really don't know what people expect of the place. What shops do people want?
A shopping area only supports shops that are profitable. I use several in Hillsborough, but there are some I never go in. Wilko and Home Bargains are great for lots of stuff, and there is a variety of bakers, butchers and fruit and veg shops. If I need items that I can't get locally, Hillsborough also has a tram service into town. Best of both worlds.
Bloomdido 22-11-2011, 21:43 I must have been shopping in Hillsborough at least twice in my life. Home Bargains = trash. Wilkinsons has more kudos.

you should think yourself lucky - look at firth park, every shops a corner shop even when they're not on a corner then theres all the takeaways - all the takeaways selling the same thing, the place is a complete hovel !!!!!

the only good shops there were the charity shops but saying that, even they are selling stuff so highly priced now i tend to just browse for a 'real bargain' in them and buy new at a large store in town
Whatever people may think of the shops in Hillsborough, it's still better for shopping than Grenoside, High Green, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Manor, Parson Cross, Dore.....You get my drift.
Regards
Doom

What type of kudo is sold at wilkinsons? Is it a cleaning agent? It sounds like something thought up by aalan sugar!
HarmOKnee 23-11-2011, 11:26 do they do Prada? Only someone was asking about them on here the other day?
(said I suspecting I know the answer)
I don't look at the labels, but I think the most expensive is about £50, so probably not. If they're copies (or lookalikes) they look very nice.
Hillsborough is boring agreed
What exactly do you expect from a shopping centre, apart from what Hillsborough has? It's got a huge range of independent shops, cafes and restuarants, as well as loads of high st names.
Are you expecting troupes of dancing girls, the hanging gardens of Babylon, jugglers, fire-eaters what?
AJ sheffield 23-11-2011, 14:09 Hillsborough is a crap hole, the only difference between that and Firvale is the lack of shell suits.

Dont forget the herds of wildebeast sweeping down the slopes of Wisewood, and the flamingos in The Don plus the menagerie in the park.

I have never seen shell suits on sale at Fir Vale!

Tell that to Eastern Europe.
indiechick 23-11-2011, 15:18 Have u been in rubys cafe really nice food and good value for money ? Also freshly ground coffee.
No I havent, but not to say I wouldnt, in fact I think some of the cafes/coffee shops look lovely!
Not knocking the ones that are there, would rather there were a few than none at all. Just with another one opening recently, admittedly a bit further down, I do worry that saturation point has been met and it would be a real shame if peoples businesses struggle just because there are too many.
I actually like Hillsborough for shopping. We trot down on a Saturday for our meat and veg and do regularly use Wilko and even Poundland!!!!
Would be lovely if there was a nice clothes shop/shoe shop but can totally understand why there is not when Meadowhall is so close
AJ sheffield 23-11-2011, 15:35 I have never seen shell suits on sale at Fir Vale!
Because everyone is already wearing them. There must be some Eastern European shell suit mountain somewhere.
Hillsborough's ok. Not exciting, but a good local shopping centre.
The drinking establishments are pretty disgusting with the Rawson at the top of the pile you'd think they couldn't sink much lower but they do. The Rawson looks ok at the weekend when it's full but other times it looks what it is, cheap and dirty.

I take it you are an accepted regular in there given your insight;it seems well suited to your taste.
HarrietStar 23-11-2011, 20:28 I love living and shopping in hillsborough, we have great butchers, green grocers, fishmongers, newsagents, video and game stores, cafes, and a choice of supermarkets, plus shops to get homeware and clothes. Plus, estate agents, banks, hairdressers - we all
need those things sometimes! it's great having a mini town centre and removes the need to go to meadowhall. The only thing id like to see is a good deli.

Hear hear! There are fantastic shops in Hills....award winning butchers (Crawshaws and others no doubt); fresh fish from Manns; at least 2 good coffee shops (Java and Gracies); Eve's fruit & veg is really good. And the charity shops are good (not tat emporia). I've lived here 2 years and love it. Believe me, I've done my stint in soul-less suburbia where there's little shopping choice and, once school run is over, tumbleweed blows across the streets. Hillsborough is a great community and needs residents to commit to it, not slag it off.

As a service provider can you really afford to alienate 2/3rds of the city?

actually the thread title says that boring is not the word
MissChatter 24-11-2011, 09:56 i love hillsborough with its array of shops and cafes. The only problem i have is the array of shops are the same for such a small shopping area. Multipal hairdressers and nail and spray tan places, multipal frozen food shops and cafes are over subscribed, i then see there is a new accessory shop opening again these are plentiful.

would there be any scope for widening it to local artisan businesses...there are a fair few in hillsborough, but we dont all have shops :(
something that id be really interested in doing next year would be an open studio day, maybe with a demo/sales/workshop included...do you know of any other makers who may be interested in an s6 studio tour?

I don't see why not Sophie, you can contact the council officer who is responsible for this via a link on the made and trade facebook page and ask.
I just went to the post office, other than that I occasionally get a coffee at Java and sometimes get things from wilkos and Boots, I don't use any other shops in Hillsborough.

There must surely be a demand for all these shops or they would soon close.
elaine-f 02-12-2011, 13:47 Hillsborough is far from boring...it is one of Sheffields largest shopping centres. Where else can you go and have sports facilities, library, college park, a range of high street and independent shops offering unique and niche products all within walking distance...there are some fantastic small businesses in Hillsborough and its not a fair comment to say "Boring is not the word".
DJMartin 03-12-2011, 19:42 I love living in Hillsborough, it has a really good variety of shops, both independent and your usual chains. We are really close to Rivelin and the countryside. The park and walled gardens are fantastic. It has excellent public transport links. The local secondary school (Forge Valley) is great. I wouldn't live anywhere else in Sheffield. And the vast majority of people are friendly as well.
chiz1979 03-12-2011, 20:06 yeah Hillsborough aint no notting hill is it, but its ok for general stuff, theres a lovely butchers just next to morrisons, just down from the pound shop which is also great! It was Wilkinson's, again useful, so yeah its not great, but why not just head into town for 'fun' rather than hanging round there?
I've been saying for years that Hillsborough is in dire need of more toilet facilities, especially since the ones in the Co Op got closed due to vandalism. I know there's a loo in the Cafe in the Precinct and in the Pubs but you can't use them without being obliged to buy something.
The poundland is great but i think it would have been miles better if poundland was put in place of the old woolworths (now herrins) premises. It is called herrins isnt it? That is a great size building for a poundland.
That herrins frozen foodsstore is shocking as if farmfoods isnt bad enough for cheap and nasty flavourless food. Herrins is just pyure cheap really realy poor quality tasteless food.
I say get shot of herrins and move poundland in.

Its Not another hairdressers (amount wise). Funky divas closed down because the manager chose to just keep the one in morrisons open. Some of the girls from that one left to open a new one because they didnt like the manager from funky divas. So its the same amount of hairdressers as before.
80swasfun 04-12-2011, 19:47 Don't forget the drugs shop it's called the ball

I've pointed out so many times before that there are free toilet facilities in the bowling pavilion and in the bus interchange. The one in the interchange has disabled access and baby changing facilities. Its not the prettiest loo in the world but it's free.
I wish whoever is responsible for the expensive looking tardis on Holme Lane would get it operational. It must have cost a lot of money and its still not in use. :shakes:

I've noticed that and quite often has adverts for other councils other than Sheffield.....think the last one was Manchester and before that Northamptonshire County Council!
Hillsborough should go more upmarket in my opinion.
