Sheffield is to share in the £71m funding for Transform South Yorkshire announced by the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott this morning.

Three large areas of Sheffield have been identified for the funding to transform the local housing market. These areas North, South, and East Sheffield each have an Area Development Framework (ADF) which sets out how the area will be transformed.

Within the three ADFs there are a wide range of projects including masterplanning, work on parks and green spaces, help for owner occupiers, and streetscene work, all of which will contribute to successful, sustainable neighbourhoods. The projects are a mixture of new schemes and projects, and extensions of successful existing ones such as the Fir Vale facelift scheme.

The Fir Vale facelift scheme is physical improvements to the front and roof of properties, including the boundary wall and gardens. The aim is to dramatically improve the appearance of the street. Evidence suggests that facelift is a signifcant factor in increasing confidence in an area and helping to increase the value of properties.

Another project being funded by Transform is The South Sheffield Environmentals project which will deliver a significant part of an integrated green space regeneration strategy that will create the foundation of a quality park system through the heart of some of South Sheffield's least successful housing areas. Substantial work will done at three key sites: Manor Lodge, Deep Pits Park, and Norfolk Park. Leader of the Council, Councillor Jan Wilson said: "We believe that all residents of Sheffield, council tenants, private tenants, and owner occupiers should live in a warm, comfortable home, in an area they choose to live in, and we are bringing in the money needed to achieve this. I am delighted that Sheffield will receive this funding to help us achieve our goal to create successful neighbourhoods across the city. It will enable us to make the housing market work throughout the city, and allow people to have a choice of areas to live in, whether they want to rent or buy their own home. Housing Market Renewal money will also complement other investment that Sheffield has successfully bid for to date, as part of our programme to raise up to £1billion to bring all Council homes up to the government's Decent Homes Standard by 2010."

Sheffield has already benefited from Transform South Yorkshire's initial funding. The homesteading scheme currently running in the North of Sheffield allows people to buy houses at a discount if they agree to make improvements to the property. The scheme helps people to become owner occupiers and improves the quality of homes on an estate; it has been expanded using funding from Transform South Yorkshire.

Councillor Chris Weldon, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said: "We have already received some money from Transform South Yorkshire's initial funding and this money is already making a difference to neighbourhoods in Sheffield through schemes like homesteading and face lift. Today's announcement will allow us to widen and improve existing schemes and to start work on new projects. We have already done some consultation work on proposed projects with tenants and residents and further consultation will take place as the projects develop. The involvement of local people is a crucial part of achieving successful neighbourhoods."
