i'm looking out of my window and just thinking that it's starting to stay lighter for a bit longer. i love the summer and light nights, sat outside till late with a glass of cold lager. My sister prefers the winter nights sat with the doors and curtains closed with a nice warm fire.

Got to be summer...I love the lightning bugs glowing, the cicadas humming, the smell of honeysuckle and the stars on sultry nights. And, if there's a roiling summer thunderstorm in the works, that's even better!

Does Sheffield have lightning bugs? Just wondering because an acquaintance who used to live in Colorado had never seen them until she came to Indiana.

Summer is so more sociable because you can be out and about and have a quiet beer with friends sat outside. And this year we'll be able to stay out later!

Never heard of lightning bugs over here... what are they?

I don't mind winter or summer nights, summer nights are warmer and later, but i have bad hayfever and late eve is one of the worst times so i have to stay in most of the time anyway....

winter nights are earlier and colder but can have some fantastic sunsets (and no pollen!!!) and snuggling in front of the fire is nice....

i guess it all depends on who you are with and what you are doing ;) ;)

I like both, enjoy that carefree feeling of a lovely warm summers evening sitting outside with a nice glass of wine but I also love being snug in front of a crackling fire with a hot chocolate and teacakes ............mmmmmm

Yup summer nights here too. I hate going to work in the dark and getting home in the dark. It's so depressing and you can see why people suffer from seasonal depression. When I get home I like to be able to go out if I want to without worrying who's sneaking about in the shadows. Saying that when the Summer finally kicks off this year I'll hopefully be living back down Ecclesall Rd/Hunters Bar end of town. :D Goodbye Manor, you won't be missed.

Have to disagree with everone on this one and say winter nights win it for me. My estate has lots of idiots standing outside getting drunk on lighter nights and I prefer the peace, quiet and cosyness (spelling?) of a winter night.

Never heard of lightening bugs - I wonder if they're the same as thunderbugs - those tiny little black flying things you get when its really humid?

Regarding lightning bugs on summer nights, I probably should have mentioned that they're also called fireflies. They're actually flying beetles whose tails light up. See this for more info:

I feel deprived :(

EDIT: tho if i saw one you'd probably have seen me running in the opposite direction anyway!!! ;)

Nah... they don't do anything bad to ya;they just fly, glow and perch on your hands. Children make a game out of catching them in the dark.

yeah me too before christmas is best thats my favourite time of year when you come home from work and put the fire on and the tree lights very cosy.
I do like the spring but summer i have hayfever my hair never goes right cos i'm sweating and the streets are full of kids!
I know i sound a grumpy old cow but i like a quiet cosy life!

Does Sheffield have lightning bugs?

We have Glow-worms here. The larvae of a beetle Lampyris noctiluca (http://website.lineone.net/~galaxypix/faq.html) have the bio-luminescence.

I don't think that we have any flying fireflies but I have seen them as close as southern France.

I like both but am leaning more towards summer.Theres nothing better than chilling outside with a glass of wine in the hamock while its still nice and warm at 9pm.
I like winter too when you can cuddle up infront of the fire and look out the window at all the xmas lights.

Definately summer though

When I used to work the night shift years ago it was great to see it go dark around 11pm and then start to get light about 2.45am during the summer.

Anyone who's ever worked nights will know about the feeling of being the only person awake and 'minding' the world while everyone sleeps.

I like summer nights :D
At the moment, working evenings (especially on a single handed round) is quite scary and I feel a bit vulnerable out on my own, so I'll be glad when I've got a little bit of daylight left :D

Also theres nothing nicer than sitting out in the garden with a drink during the evening, or being able to go out clubbing in a skirt without freezing to death :hihi: ~ Not that it stops me now ofcourse!

hmn...

a winter night wrapped up under a soft blanket with a beautiful woman in front of warming glow of an open log fire, a bottle of champagne half empty of the table... in a wooden cottage in the snow swept mountains...

or...

a summer night's strole across the white sands of a distant beach holding the hand of a beautiful woman as the sun sets and the waves gently crash down... the sky a crescendo of colours...

hmn...

either i guess
