View Full Version : What does everyone do for a living here?
Paul Cocker 20-01-2003, 06:59 Just thought it may be useful to build up ties ... wonder what people on here did for a living etc...?
I work for a Packaging Company near Meadowhall - kinda interesting in a sad box-nerd kinda way, but I like it.
I was also at The Star for 8 years as a designer, so a big change for me.

Photographer. Actually i need a web site, anybody interested in creating one?
Yes Malaika, but I,m only an amateur. I have all the software for site building.
I would have a go if you like, I'm unemployed at the moment after being made redundant from a web design company, I did the back end stuff for http://arcos.kusala.com (I'm especially proud of the never even been used forum- look at "wishlist" topic to see it properly) and I integrated it with Worldpay servers. I was almost going to set up a web design company but after further reflection I decided to try and get a normal job instead. Anyway have a look at the mockup at http://www.zinkweb.co.uk/Example1.html where there is a an example page. It demonstrates some of my abilities, all graphics by me all words by me all html crafted by me.
I also did http://www.corraal.org/ although Im not happy with the front page it was produced in that manner under orders from the boss.
"Turn this poster into a web page and put it on the front page!"
"It looks awful!"
"Do it!"
So there you go.
The old women look half dead on that page.
Anyone who sticks corpses on their front page is asking for trouble.
Hi. I kind of like the Zink one. i would be looking at a home page with maybe six different photo style catagory pages if you see what i mean. I have it all doen on paper and all the pictures sorted out, only i've only got a small amount to spend on getting the site done. How much would you charge do you think, for something of this size containing maybe twenty photos.

work in Rotherham looking after doleys :D
Michael_W 30-01-2003, 15:17 How do you look after the doleys ?
Being unemployed sucks !, I was out of work briefly last year after being made redundant and remember asking about training courses at the Job Centre, I was told there was none for the likes of me (Good "Taxpaying" Person...apparently) but if I was a junkie, ex con etc... I could take my pick of 'free' courses. What is wrong with this country ?
I assume the latter are the 'doleys' that get looked after !
yeah my lot have been unemployed for 6months to year although i have had some blokes 25 years unemployed
but its a good laugh at times

As little as possible, if not less!. :D
Think you've got this wrong. 'Junkies' 'Ex-cons' are subjected to the same rules as everyone else. Six months on job seekers allowance before training courses on offer. An offer is made, however inappropriate it is to you if you decline your benefit can be stopped, depends on the compassion of your advisor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was quoting what I was told by two seperate female employees, one of whom was my interviewer, at the Job Centre !!
I don't know much about benefits, courses, JSA etc.... as I have worked for 26 years since leaving school. I enquired if there were any 'free' courses, I had been made redundant (again) and fancied a change of career. I think the exact words were "Sorry, there's nothing for you, your one of the good people, if you were a drug addict or ex convict you could go on one". Maybe she was just venting her frustration, her fellow employee had overheard and backed her opinion up.

RustyBucket 14-02-2003, 17:00 I may have missed the point, but what is funny about unemployment? I am assuming that you work for The Employment Service when you write about looking after "doleys"? Should a civil servant with a career and a well sorted pension really be referring to the unemployed as "doleys".
They will always be wasters who do not want to work, but the majority of the people you claim to be looking after have already lost their jobs and their dignity, so providing you and your colleagues with a daily laugh is hardly likely to be the job they are after.

Yeah - one of your mates gave me a french franc instead of a 10p in my change
i've noticed that sheffield seems to have a disproportionate number of grumpy bus drivers - though some of you are lovely :)
i assumed that the grumpiness is due to bad working conditions/pay/customers. am i right, or is it just that the bus companies attract miseries?
I think the bus drivers are great! They do such an important job and I'm sure they have to put up with lots of grumpy and annoying passengers.
Sorry it was the only way I could get rid of it (whoops) anyway if you hang on to it it will be worth a lot more than 10p.
You get "grumpies" in every joband I admit we have quite a few. Not making excuses for bad manners but I think a bit more running time on the busy routes would be a help, however that would mean cost money and "First" only Made 10 million pounds last year.

No ****e from me Joe. I wouldn't do what you do, for any amount of money.
There has already been some debate about the strike, and yeah, it was kind of supporting at first to almost universally condenming at the end. But what I have noticed that there tends to be a quite surprising amount of honest debate here. You have your view, here's mine...
the respect show for different opinions is more than I have experienced on any comparable web site / news group / mailing list.

pitsmoorlad 15-07-2004, 07:45 I'm a bluebottle sexer at a maggot farm. I have to keep the ratio of male to female bluebottles at the correct level. Too many females and the males are knackered. Too many males and they start to fight over the females. Without me the whole maggot producing industry would collapse, causing serious financial problems in the stock market. Pretty important job as I'm sure you'd all agree. Well, it's a living........
Internetowl 15-07-2004, 13:40 Hey Pitsmoor - sounds great!
pitsmoorlad 15-07-2004, 14:26 well it keeps the wolf from the door. The main problem is watching out for two male bluebottles taking a shine to each other. Things like that can severely disrupt the male to female ratio, which at the moment is 3 : 1 in favour of the females. Any bluebottles not coming up to scratch are sent into the spiders web room. Fascinating aint it ?

pitsmoorlad 16-07-2004, 07:12 "how do you tell the sex of a bluebottle"
upholder,
Takes years of practice. You have a pair of tweezers with which you hold the bluebottle, you then look closely at them through a very powerful magnifying glass. It used to be easier, in that you looked for tattoos and whiskers on the males, lipstick and a clutch bag on the females, but stereotyping has become a thing of the past in the bluebottle world, as with humans, so you have to look more closely and intimately. Once the sex has been determined they are put into the correct room for their particular gender, then released into the mating room in the correct ratio. Seasoned veterans at sexing can tell the difference in houseflies, which are much smaller.

Just an idea but why don't the forum members get it together and help each other out. A good example was last week I was looking for an auto electrician (as had engine problems with my car) in the yellow pages. So why don't we all list what job we do and then if anyone needs any advise or help, or an auto electrician for instance, then we know where to turn
I work in sales for a distribution company in town, so if anyone wants a good price on till rolls/credit card rolls, price gun labels, portable applience testing labels, payslips and stacks more things that a business has to buy in, then get in touch and I'll see what I can do for ya!
Thanks

Sam Miguel 10-12-2004, 21:00 I think I'vre probably said this before: but at the moment I am an industrial radiographer.
But I really have no 'proper' trade, not because I am completely unskilled, but because I never wanted to be typecast into a role and so decided around sixteen years after leaving the womb, that this would be the unsteady path that I would tread.
My CV is so heavy (because of the past employment section) it cost £93 in postage costs to send it with my last job application.
So I bum around and write rubbish.
Oh well.
I work at the Northern General Hospital,i'll not say which department but lets just say the other departments take us for granted! They wouldn't know what to do if we weren't there ha!

A quick click down there \/ will show that my freebee attempt so far is pretty lame, thinking it might be time to bring in the experts, or just someone with a bit of experience.
But back to my job, i trained as a PE teacher, was very nearly a policeman, have been a barman for about 7 years, and recently set up my own late night alcohol delivery company.
