View Full Version : Ricky Gervais
It will be interesting whether or not he wins many BAFTA's did year.
I have just started a forum dedictaed to him and his co-stars and am looking for posters and help promoting it

I think he's a bit over-rated to be honest..can't see what all the fuss is about..fair enough the office is quite funny but its about all he's ever done..the 'Animals' stand up show was very poor and when he used to be on the 11 o clock show his jokes came across as just shock factor and not that funny...He's living on the success of The Office..will be interesting to see what he comes up with next
I agree. David Brent is funny, Ricky Gervais isn't.
Yodameister 27-03-2004, 19:14 More to the point, David Brent is very funny. Ricky Gervais is alarmingly like David Brent in real life. Torouble is in real life David Brent would not be funny.
Do you remember that awful chat show he used to do? ISTR that it only lasted half a series or so.
qazitory 30-03-2004, 13:49 Am I the only one who thinks Ricky Gervais is funnier than David Brent?? Animals was really funny, especially the bit about the bible lol. The chat show was also good, although I think it only had six episodes??
I'm watching 'Politics' on Channel 4 and I have to say, he is a very funny standup. I love his two series (I think Extras is a genius follow up to The Office). Quite surprised at how funny this live show is!

I have that on a DVD somewhere - do you remember that joke?
"That Thora Hird, always doing adverts for pension insurance, going up in her electric char"
"She's up for an award... ...she's up like a f***ing grey'ound"
LOL.
I find his stand-up a bit... lazy. The best stand-ups are ones who've been on the circuit for ages and actually refined their talent. How many gigs had he actually done prior to Animals? Not many, I reckon.
Love The Office though.
Lickable 06-01-2006, 16:23 Ricky Gervais is naturally funny. He doesn't need to try. I think hes hada lot of arrogance in his personality, that he one day sat back and thought... jeez this is ****, maybe i could use this for a good thing. Now... everytime he feels like being arrogant, he turns it into a joke.
I say good on him. Keep it coming Ricky!
...I think his radio stuff is far better than anything he does on tv (except the office, obviously)... tried watching Ricky Gervais Meets last night on C4, can't remember being bored as much as that in a long time so switched it off mid-way through....
Ricky Gervais is funny. I've got Animals & Politics on DVD.
koenigsinger 08-01-2006, 07:26 Ricky gervais is a man with a gift for the absurd, the obvious and the outrageous, all in the name of laughter. Where he seems to fall down is that he forgets when to turn off the 'persona' of arrogant oaf, which IS just an act, in reality he is a bright, articulate and quite self effacing person.
He does have a similar problem to peter kay however, both shot into the public conscience with very funny material, but neither has moved on sufficiently to capitalise on their vein of form.
but both highly talented.
Don_Kiddick 08-01-2006, 10:15 Question to the ladies; is he attractive?
If so, why?

Definetly. His XFM and Xmas Radio 2 shows were great.
Karl Pilkington is also a genius and makes Gervais scream with laughter with anything he says. Is he really that stupid or is it all a clever act?
FairyNormal 09-01-2006, 10:18 Sorry but I just don't 'get' him at all. I really don't find him funny and think he is an arrogant so 'n' so. I really can't see waht all the fuss is about.

His comedy is definately layered, try reading between what he says!!!!!
Theres things that you miss on the first time of watching, face expressions ect.
As he says there are certain people he wants to make laugh and there are people he hopes not to make laugh - Maybe your one of the latter!
oasismark 09-01-2006, 13:38 Ricky Gervais is hillarious!!!!

I like the office alot, (phoenix nights is better), but i love his stand up and i love extras.
It's his facial expressions that make me laugh!:D
That documentary where he met larry davis, was good, he explained he wants people to think about his jokes, his jokes are not obvoius.
No one at the new forum.
