Free weights? What do you mean? Free to take away? Free as in not attached to a machine? Sorry, not sure of the definition here.

yes, it is your dumbells and barbells where you can change the weight at either end usually with discs of steel or plastic filled with sand.

i have heard virgin fitness centre has got over 200 free weights so that would be good, but you have jamies gym down next to bramall lane where the power lifters go (he was an olympic champion) so it depends what youd be wanting to do.

I used Virgin for a while but to be honest wasn't that impressed witht he set up - I now use the university gym which is good for free weight (and convenient to me!) Apparently the gym at Don Valley is an bit of a spit and sawdust gym with many free weights so it may be worth a look?

Concorde has plenty of free weights and machines, plus treadmills, bikes etc etc.

I go to Greens, just round the corner from the pub (and no, I don't drive there!) and they have lots of free weights. I do the Body Max class which is essentially exercise using 'free weights' to music. Plenty of them in the gym room too.

Expensive membership though......

Whats the best Gym to join in Sheffield? The last time i joined i only went about 5 times and then just never went again!! not because i didn't like it, i just didn't get the time - so it was a nice waste of money. Im thinking of starting up again to lose weight but need one that will actually make me want to keep going.

I read in the Star that Hillsborough Leisure Centre Gym won the 2004 award for best gym, so might nip down and see it. Anyone got any views?

Hillsborough leisure centre is part of fitness unlimited. So £25/month and you can use the gym there and at Ponds forge and all the other facilities (swimming, sauna, etc...) and you get a discount on court hire for things like badminton/squash.

phoned up this morning, found out it's £26.99 a month for full membership and £19.99 for off peak which isn't bad considering you get to use Concord, Ponds Forge & Don Valley too. Also theres no 12 month contract, it's initially for 3 months then you can cancel or keep it going month by month.
I was also told you get a fitness trainer too for a month or so! I think this'll be the one for me as all the others are far more expensive and want you to sign up for ages.

If you work for sheffield city council, the corporate membership is only £19.50 a month for peak times

Virgin Active down Broadfield Road's quite good. Its £42 a month but you only have to join for a month after that you can leave.

Right hi tec gear and luvly spa / sauna bit.

I go to the Living Well Health Club at the Hilton, its really cool coz you get a personal trainer until you've achieved what weight/build you're hoping for...you also get a pvt pool, jacuzzi, sauna (towels provided! so your gym bag's manageable & yay!!! no burn marks on yr shoulder/sore arms ready to jump out of their sockets from all that carrying :P) you also get pamper sessions after your work-out if you so wish...

I use the Fitness Unlimited at Hillsborough leisure centre. It was £25.99 but has just been increased to £26.99.

I think it is good value for money. I use the gym and sauna 3 times a week. I also swim and do classes when I feel like it.

The only downside to it is it's popularity. If you can get down in the day then it's fantastic because it's almost empty. If you go straight from work as I do then it's really busy and you often have to wait to get on the machines.

Hopefully they might expand the gym. Afterall they've increased the price so there must be some extra cash for more machines. Well I'm hoping anyway.

Depends what you're after Letstat - an aerobic workout at one of the big corporate posing places or just a place where you can lift some weights, use a bench etc.

I attend these gym and I used to work for SIV, the price goes down after you have been a member for over a year, I have been a member for a few years and mine is £19.99, they also do corporate membership for groups from the same employment joining together and certain workplaces, e.g. Council etc.
As you can use any of the venues in the company they upgarded Hilsbrough gym as a trial and if it is successfull, as I'm sure it has been then they will do the same to the other venues.

The best advice for gym's is to pay when you go that way you wont be paying £££ s and only using it a few times.

paying £40 per month thats £480 per year ( or 160 visits to the gym at £3 per visit) Do you really think you will go that many times a year . So find a gym that you can pay as you train.

Cyclone

unless you already know that you will spend that much.

Swimming at ponds forge @ peak, £3.85, do that twice a week for a month, £30.8. peak membership £26/month.

Wow! Hillsborough Leisure Centre is alot bigger than i expected. The Gym is huge and theres also a steam room & sauna which is just what i need.
I've gone for 19.99 a month with which i've already saved a load of money cos i go twice a week! very happy with my choice. Oh, and i've got my personal programme next week - no cost! It was £25 at another gym i asked.

Further to this thread, come someone tell me which gyms are the closest and most convenient to reach from the Tapton area, as I am coming to uni in September and as a 4 or 5 times a week gym-goer I want/need to keep this up. I know that students can get a decent deal at the Goodwin via the Usport link with the uni, is this the best place to go? Is it any good? Cheers.

I use the university gym and find it very good - it has a nice range of free weights, batches of cardio and resistance machines, a pool and all the other gubbins you may want. The only bad point about it is it tends to get very crowded just after Christmas and in the first month or so of the academic year.

Jonesy
30-05-2004, 12:07
All the people with good intentions who don't keep them up I suppose. I e-mailed the Goodwin and they told me they will be annoucing special offers for freshers soon so hopefully I'll get a good deal.

I am a fitness instructor and teach at some of the gyms in the area. Out of all of them I have been to I think Virgin is the best in terms of facilities although as it is so big I think it is a bit more impersonal and less of a friendly environment than some of the others.
I used to be a member at Greens before i started teaching and liked it there. Jonesy - Greens is not far from the university and is quite popular with students. Also the uni fitness club - Goodwin Sports is meant to be good and probably cheaper.

hi everyone.

Im a bit of a fanatic when it comes to gyms. ive been a member of greens, livingwell and recently virgin, but i keep going back to fitness unlimited. for just 26.99 per month you can use ponds forge, hillsborough leisure, concord and don valley. its great, there are 6 swimming pools, 6 gyms, saunas, steam rooms and jacussiz, they run over 200 classes per week aswell. the staff are really great, they are knowledgable, friendly and get results. i lost over a stone in weight when i was a member.

there are loads of great things about the membership. there is no joining fee which is always a bonus. Hillsborough has just had a massive refurbishment and is georgous, don valley is great if you are a weight trainer and i hear that concord is having the same type of refurb as hillsborough. It seems the company is making quite a few investments. ive not seen that in any of the private gyms - have any of you???

oh yeh - you also get a discount for staying a member over a year.. if you want to leave though - its only a 3 month contract.

left virgin last month, i re-joined ponds forge today, i feel at home there. if you dont believe me ............ try it. they do a free tour with no obligation. all you have to do is ring em and ask. there number is 0114 2233419. ............. i should be on commission shouldnt I????!!!!!

e-mail back and let me know what you think - perhaps i will see you there!

I'm thinking of joining the Virgin Active gym just off Chesterfield Road - does anyone already go to this?

And i'd like someone to go with too - otherwise i'll probably give up after a few weeks!

I'd most likely go early mornings before work, and evenings in the week after 6pm. Weekends perhaps mid-day or evenings. I need to get fitter, but also want to have fun too, so if anyone wants to join me... PM me.

Virgin active gym is full of posers and people that listen to that rave music!! Join Greens for a more sedate gym and a posher poser. There is this guy who is a member of Greens and Virgin with a shaved head. He is never out of the gym. I get the impression that he used to be a prisoner. I don't know why. Maybe its the big black truck he drives. WARRIOR! I get the urge to attack his car with a spray can and change it to W****er but I guess I need to work out more before I do. He'd kill me!!

Join Fitness Unlimited so you can use Ponds Forge, Hillsborough, Don Valley or Concorde.

The number of posers is minimal. Most people are "normal" folk just trying to get a bit fitter and healthier.

Talking of strange people at the gym. I have to stifle my giggles when new female members come into the gym and you can tell they've never done this fitness thing before because they have perfectly styled hair, new "gym outfits" and have perfectly applied their make up.

A few weeks later they look like the rest of us, sweaty, make up sweated off, hair stuck all over the place and have realised that comfy clothes are much better than being trendy! :D

Red 2
19-07-2004, 15:38
to be honest i just thinkmost of them are people who like to keep fit. they look like posers cos they've been going for a while and have reached better fitness levels. I do understand that there are some big guys flexing in front of the mirrors but hey it's their choice.

Jonesy
19-07-2004, 16:16
Yeah, best to ignore them anyway, if they're that obsessed with the definition of their rectus abdominus then stuff them! Having said that not all of the people you might assume are posers actually are. Sometimes I get a few looks, I think it's just because I wear gloves and look a bit mean on occasions, but I'm a big softie really!

I'm probably going to to join the Goodwin in september I"ve heard good things about it.

i want to join Virgin because it's the closest one to me, and the classes they provide are much more varied than other places. I probably wouldn't go if i joined Greens (or another one) coz i don't drive and i'd have to have super motivation to be bothered to get there!

Haha thats true! I just throw on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts to work out in. My hair is always tied back and I have just my waterproof mascara on (which nothing other than make up remover can budge lol) I think people who get dolled up to work out stick out like a sore thumb. But like you said Steelblade, it's funny for us lot who are dressed normally to see them!

Hey Virgins cool!

Been going 4 months and while yes there is a poser contingent down there I've found it a lot pleasenter than when I used to go to Ponds Forge. God I got sick of that place. Yeah its cheap but you get what you pay for innit?

Unfortunately DB I much prefer working out on me own - if I ever see someone I know down there I tend to be exercising my gob more than anything other body part. Not what I joined for...

But yeah you should check it out, they've got all sorts of stuff down there not just your usual treadmills etc.

I think it depends on what time you go down to the gym on the experience you get.
I have recenly had the luxury of being able to attend during the daytime due to a change in shift patterns and it has been much less busy and no 'poseurs' at all.
Agree though, sometimes attending after 5pm can lead to the gym being very full and feeling intimidated on some exercise machinery.

There is a perfectly good gym near me it's at upperthorpe library and the people are always very friendly.
And it's not got any posers so come along and it is also very good value at only £15 a month fot the unlimited use of gym and swimming pool, beat that if you can?

Does anyone know anything about these gyms? I think they are sometimes known as the Supreme Gyms chain. They are the chain that has a gym above Boots on the Moor, one opposite Woolworths on the Moor and one near RSVP/Ask restaurant.

They don't seem to have a website and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about them, especially any membership offers.

I'm a student returning in September and trying to shop around now.

Any info or opinions appreciated!:P

Is it true that a minor can come with you for £5 a month or something. Im thinking of joining virgin as its about 2 mins from my house but my little sister who's 14 keeps on bugging me about coming with me, as she she said that for children can have a months membership for £5 when with a full paying adult member.

Is this true or is she just making it up?

£10 a month for kids. The "funky football" classes were my son's favourite. Your sister might enjoy the teenagers aerobics classes. Not sure at what age they are allowed in the actual gym though - so she might be stuck on her own in the kids classes.

Thanks for that. Well at least now i can investigate it she often gets the wrong end of the stick so i thought this might be another example.

Unrelated to the topic, how do you get the Avatars on. As theres no options to pick from plus i can't see where you can even up load one.

Its ok. not quite a flash as the others and definately no posers. People seem to be either the fitness freaks or people who are just wanting to lose a bit of weight. I only went for a month on a £30 promotional thing.

Not sure about prices though. Put this way if your determind to get fit or lose weight without being bothered about looking flash in the latest gym, sherbet is fine.

I only went to the one above boots. I enjoyed my experience with them. staff were nice and friendly, and it even had a personal touch to it with it being a small company. And as far as i can remember everyone went by themselves, no came in pairs or anything.

hmm i've had a look around green's and visited the cage website, and i'm not very impressed - i've just moved to sheffield and want to find a no frills gym (low-cost, friendly but serious) - all i need is a crosstrainer (or ski machine) and some REAL free weights (i.e. not smith machine). any ideas?

cheers,

steelblade
25-08-2004, 13:41
It's expensive from what I can remember. I think when I called them it was around £40 per month and no discount for poor students!

I'm cancelling my SIV membership in favour of the college gym. It will only cost me £11 per month. It will be a shame that there isn't a swimming pool but I can't afford not to join it.

25-08-2004, 15:03
Virgin Active is a great gym - but isn't cheap.

Its 42 quid a month, unless you joined straight away when it opened as I believe they did a cheaper deal then (about 39 a month i think)

I've been a member of Greens, Fitness Unlimited and S10 (Sheffield Uni) and find Virgin the best in terms of facilities, and atmosphere.

Depends very much on what your after doing! I used Virgin for a while but found it didn't suit me (too much emphasis on machines and lycra!) and now use the uni gym which has a very good free weights section - which is the main thing I wanted. Its worth taking a bit of time to think about what you want to do then go see what available and in your price range. Theres plenty of choice out there - Virgin, Greenes, S10, The Cage, Ponds Forge etc etc.

30-08-2004, 21:18

Yeah, I'm not a new 'must get fitter' so I know what you mean, I'm sure that will die down as you imply, as they all decide they can't be bothered and pack it in! Same happened when my last gym opened, for the first few weeks you couldn't move, it's empty now!

Thats Greens on Napier Street for you then! Its the nicest gym I have ever used, not totally bursting with the super slim super sexy types who walk out of the sauna or aerobics studio without a hair out of place! And they do a wicked full english which I admit may slightly counteract the effort I put into my work out but hell any exercise is better than none!

Hi Unners,
I used to go to Sam Jones at Drakehouse... At the time I thought it was alright, but the lack of a swimming pool and proper spa facilities is a big downer for me. I think they have a sauna but thats it. I guess its alright if you just go for classes or the machines, but I like an all round experience and it just was too basic for what I like.

Sheffield Hallam Uni gym is good. They have 2 locations, City is well equiped and collegiate campus is much smaller but good nonetheless and has limited free parking.

I am happy with it and I am a qualified gym instructor. Don't do swim sauna though to be fair (at collegiate anyway - not sure about city as I have never wanted to use them!).

You don't need to be a student to join either and its lovely and quiet out of term time : )

I have tried a few gyms, although I'm not the fitness freak that maybe I'd like to be!!

Of the ones I've tried Virgin really is the best out there, as far as I'm concerned. What's great is seeing so many people from different age groups there: a gym I used to work in was always full of 20-somethings with a point to prove.

It's just a nice atmosphere to go and do whatever you want.

I've just joined the Virgin gym (I was at Esporta) and it's great.
The equipment is modern and the place is realy clean. The pool is great and they have times when it's adults only. The spa is very relaxing with good sized saunas and steam rooms.
The instructor who did my induction was nice and took plenty of time to explain everyhting and listen to what I wanted to do.

You do get a good mix of people there.

Also, as you pay monthly if you don't like it you can leave, unlike some of the other gyms who make you sign-up for a year.

There is a joining fee of £50, but I don't know anyone who has paid it.
Just do what i did, say something like "Oh yeah, I realy want to join but it will have to be next month, when I've saved-up the joining fee, I can't afford to payout £90 all in one go", they waived the fee there and then :0)

That's interesting - as we have a Fitness First in our area... well, in Lewisham (apparently - never been to it) Is it £29. per month?

you could try here.

As far as I am aware the membership is £10 per annum and then you pay around £3 each time you go.

Try Fitness Unlimited - you get to use Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge, Concord Sports Centre and Don Valley Stadium!!
It's £26.99 peak & 19.99 off peak - you get unlimited swimming, gyms all classes included and health spa's - the best thing is it's not full of posers and professional athletes either so you dont feel like a turnip.
Go down to one of the centres they give you a free tour and you might even get a corporate discount if you work for any of the large companies on their books.
I've been going to Hillsborough for about 6 months now and it's fantastic, the staff are really helpful and it is very friendly place to go.

The only problem with fitness first is that if you go to ponds forge at peak times (i.e- just after 5) your usually stood around waiting for machines for agaes while your body cools down, not sure what its like at hillsborough tho, and in the sauna area there is usually groups of oldish men who are speaking in funny languages.

There is one on the moor thats ok- no swimming pool or anything but its a good solid basic gym and its pretty cheap too.

u cant use ponds forge with fitness first, ur thinking o f other one that inc concorde and don.
with that one can you go ice skating too? if you wanted

No. I find it funny too. What's even funnier is the free Anoraks they were away to celebrate the opening of the gym. They had "Virgin Active" printed on the back, at the bottom. Can you think of anybody who would wish to wear an anorak with "virgin active"printed on their @rse? Me either.

hi, apparently there is a gym in (or nearish) to broomhill which is pay as you go.
has anyone heard of it or knows where it is? im a poor student who cant afford to pay yearly for gyms as id would b a total waste of money.
tho this fitness unlimited sound really good, where abouts is that?

Fitness unlimited is the council facilities at Hilsborough Leisure Centre, Ponds Forge and I think somewhere else (Concorde?) It's about £25 a month, and you can use any facilities - gym, swimming pool etc. I'm thinking of joining up there myself.

The only gym at Broomhill I can think of is Goodwins University gym, on Whitam Road, opposite the Weston Park Hospital.

Think you can also just pay to use their gym - I think it's about £3.50-4 or so.

any1 got n e advice on which gym to join?

so far i've checked out the university gym, which although is nice, i'm not that keen on joining cus it's always busy (member last yr)

Checked out 'the cage' - extremely nice, but very expensive considering they charge you £30 joining fee everytime you 're-join' i.e. i'd wanna stop for a month over xmas and if i wanted to join again in jan, i'd have to pay a further £30.

Apparently there's a gym in netherthorpe living centre or something - n e info??

Anyone know of n e others?

i live in the crookes area and wouldn't really want more than a 10 minute drive...ideally.

I think Virgin is one of those gyms that doesn't hold you to a contract so if you can't get a free trial perhaps you could join and then cancel if you don't like it?
Other than that, most gyms let you 'try before you buy' for an afternoon if you ask them.

they are good but with it being so cheap it does get VERY VERY Busy and alot of the time you are stood waiting for machines to become available which is never a good thing when you have just warmed up.

I am now a member of greens gym and find it to be much better.

I'm a self employed fitness trainer and I work with people in their homes on a 1-2-1 basis, and I also run classes some of which you can pay as you train.

People who stick with see results, for example one of my clients went from a size 16 to a 12 in 9 weeks and lost 2 stones in the process

Contact me on phphilz@hotmail.com if you want more details.

The Source Gym is one of the best kept secrets in Sheffield. Its brand new, got top quality technogym machines and is a damn sight better than the fitness unlimited membership. Plus for your money you get all fitness classes included like, kick boxing, yoga, Jeet kun do etc.

You are only tied in for three months at a time. Plus if you work for either NHS, Sheffield Council or work in a shop in Meadowhall you get it for £25 per month peak membership or £35 otherwise.

You get a week free trial if you call 0114 2635600, so have nothing to lose, you can try it for nowt!

At Fitness Unlimited it's also 3 months membership contract - and if you work for NHS, Council, Police, HSBC etc . . . it's only £20 PEAK, thats £15 LESS !!!! . . . . .& £15 OFF PEAK, thats £10 LESS!
With use of 4 of the biggest venues in Sheffield you cant really go far wrong. . . . How many venues does the Source have?

I've said it before & I'll say it again - Fitness Unlimited.

£26.99 a month peak, £19.99 a month off peak.
No induction fee, no joining fee, only 3 month contract.
Use of Ponds Forge, Hillsborough, Concord & Don Valley.

If you work for NHS, Council, Police, HSBC etc . . theres big discounts too. Ask about corporate membership. If you want to have a look around, nip down to any of the centres and they will give you a free tour.

I'm looking for recomendations for a decent gym in the city centre. Not looking for anything too pretentious e.g. The Cage (which is closing anyway) and not a dump either.

Just looking for somewhere with reasonably new equipment and kept in good condition and is kept clean.

Mixture of free weights mainly and some machines, running, rowing and elipticals.

Any ideas....?

Many thanks in advance...

Has anyone been there before and have any comments?

All welcome!!

Cyclone
31-03-2005, 14:26
you can't join for just a month, it's a one year contract.
the cost was (a few years ago) between 25 and 30/month. There were no hidden extra's, but i'd recommend fitness unlimited (ponds forge/hillsborough etc..) as better value as that includes more facilities.

sam jones is nice lookin...(so are the quite a few of the staff haha) its ok...good range of machines...far too busy on a monday night unless you like waiting around for 30mins to wait for a machine.

evolution is about £150 a year cheaper....im checking it out in a few days coz my membership at sam jones is up this month.

depends what u want...i think evolution is more free weights based??..but i will have to check it out first. sam jones has classes you can do that might make the cost seem more justified if you do them regular

We went o sam jones recently and were really impressed until we found out the price! i'd be interested to hear more about this other place - did you say it was called evolution? do you know if it has a website? if not, address/phone number would be great!

MTheo
06-04-2005, 18:36
the info i have on evolution so far is...

evolution is in westfield (next to school trends and round a corner...carly drive) and is lot smaller than sam jones...its run by just the owner. the hours are 08.00 - 17.30 mon to fri, 09.00 - 13.00 sat & sun.

prices are....£20 join fee.....£3.50 a day.....£7.00 a week....£28 a month....£300 a year.

telephone is 0114 248 3249

im popping in thursday or friday for a proper look round and chat to the owner.

:) i can walk it in 5minutes...wahey bonus!

AND.....the tag line of `flexible membership arrangements' really interests me.. so i will report back on what its like.

MTheo
08-04-2005, 18:15
i wil be joining evolution gym in may-ish time :)

although it is run by a profesional body building couple there are cross trainers, exercise bikes etc....so its not just body buliders place. was very clean and the owner was very helpful and friendly. if u compare it to sam jones then u will be dissapointed i guess...it is about one 5th the size with no classes or anything. it appears great for what it is :) you pays ur money u takes ur choice!

ohhh...cant wait....no more 10-15minute walk to sam jones hehe :)
