Hi,

My Doctor has put me on the POP Cerazette, I didn't get much choice in the matter and am not to keen on the idea,

Do any ladies out there have any experience of this pill, good or bad, I have read the leaflets they give you but they are fairly vague.

Any feedback would be very helpful.

I havn't tried it personlly but know a few people who have, with both good and bad reports, i guess you don't know if it suits you til you try it!
did the doc give you a reason as to why this particular pill?

feel free to PM if you want

em3978,

it is because I am 36 and I smoke, I knew I would eventually have to change from my original pill, but she was quite abrupt about it and didn't really seem interested in any other options, it was a case of "take this and come back in 3 months"

ah ok, well i guess it might be the best one to try (i've done far too much research!!!) combined pills aren't good for smokers, so mini pills are better. most minipills have to be taken at exactly the same time every day, however cerazette is different and can be taken like the combined pill, with a 24 hour window, so you can vary the time a little without compromising its effects.
Some docs really are just rude and don't bother to explain things, i think they must have missed the communications lecture at uni!
If you're not happy, you could always go talk to someone at family planning, they do that all day so have more patience, information and help if you need it, they can also tell you more about other options.
hope that helps a bit.

She was at the Family Planning, I went there because I thought they would be more understanding and open minded than my middle aged male GP.

I think I will give the pills a go but whether they suit or not, I will give the FP clinic a wide birth and go back to my GP.

ah fair enough!!!
I got one at fpc who was rather short and treated me like an idiot and one who was understanding and listened to me... i guess its pot luck!

one thing i did learn though is that if cerazette suit then so should the implanon implant... much less hassle, lower dose and there for 3 years at a time!
I'd go and give the pills a try, see how you go, might take a while to settle down if you've been used to the combined pill, give it the whole 3 months then go back and hope you get someone different!
*hugs*

Thanks Em,

It was my first time at the FP clinic and I have to say the whole experience put me off. I am 36 and quite strong but if I had been a teenager trying to be responsible about contraception people like her could quite easily put you you off seeking any help.

I think there are far to many teenage pregnancies, but with people like her about it is hardly suprising.

Hiya valentine,

I take cerazette and have done so for a year and a half and I love it. I was put on it because I cracked my head open a couple of years ago (long story) and the combined pill made me a stroke risk - nice! I had initial issues as to how the mini pill works as technically you can become pregnant since the pill primarily works by thickening the womb entry so that sperm can't get through. However, if one or two did get through the pill makes it near impossible for the embryo to survive as it also makes the womb inhabitable - as I understood it, but then I rationalised it and figured if that ever happened I probably wouldn't ever know.

I suffered no side effects, gained no weight, my PMT is now non existent and I never get stomach cramps or anything. I very occasionally get spotting at the end of a packet but very rarely and barely noticeable. The wierdest thing is never having a period, but you soon get used to that (work out how much money you'll save!). The window is longer - I have taken it upto 12 hours late to no ill effect.

I found some very useful websites when I first went on it just by doing a google search that set my mind at rest... PM me if you want any more details!

Hope that helps.

Valentine, that's terrible that they just put you on this pill and didn't discuss it with you! That's such bad practice. I thought women had been given the luxury of choice these days:huh: I guess you could have asked for another doctor but I know that's hard to do in that kind of situation.

There are a load of different options that they should have discussed with you and FPC's usually have loads of leaflets aswell. If it was the Mulberry in town I'm surprised as they've always thrust leaflets galore on me when I've been and lately they've been very keen to give me evaluation forms a lot of the time where you put your doctor's or nurse's name and say how helpful they were etc. Feels like sitting an exam after the appointment sometimes!

The problem I had with Progesterone only hormones (in the Depo injection, not pills) was the side effects - week long headaches and general loss of interest in sex - the latter making them a damn good form of contraception! Having no periods was fantastic but the headaches were enough to put me off trying Implanon or the POP. This may just be a problem with Depo and headaches are a listed side effect of it so I don't know whether it follows for the POP and it might just be that I'm susceptible to headaches (which I am, unfortunately).

Thats so wierd cos that is precisely the reason why my doc put me on a POP in the first place - I suffer from chronic daily headache syndrome because my skull fracture wasn't noticed when i went to A&E and therefore went untreated, if anything my headaches have eased since i was switched to cerazette. Is the human body bizarre?!
