View Full Version : Courtesy on buses
*Twinkle* 24-03-2004, 20:23 Is it just me, or is there a distinct lack of courtesy among some people today?
How many times have I seen a bus full of people sit and watch an old lady falling about as the bus jerks about. Countless.
Also, what is the deal with people not getting up to allow the person sat by the window to get out at their stop? They sort of swivel their bums round, still sat down, to avoid getting up to let the person out properly. How rude?! Well if you're one of the rude people who do that then you'll know you've met me as I make a point of dragging my bag under their nose and taking an age to jiggle my hips as I get up and out of there... Grr!
Oh yeah and the people who sit at the seat nearest the aisle and look at you like you're dirt when you ask them to move over.
Grrr GRRR GRRRRRRRRRR!!! I hate public transport!

That might be the problem right there! ;)
steelblade 25-03-2004, 08:44 I detest people who sit nearest the aisle when the bus is quite obviously full.
They think that people wont ask them to move over ha they haven't yet met me! Sometimes I will ask them to move even if I could sit somewhere else, just for the fun of it!
I have bus rage :D I get sooooo stressed on my journey to work and back.
I especially get stressed on my way home by the bloke who insits on sitting near me with his walkman on full blast. I wouldn't mind but he listens to some right crap like Cher and the spice girls!!!
uncleheed 25-03-2004, 08:52 What about the people who stand at the front near the luggage racks in a crowd when there are clearly seats near the back. You have to push through them like a football match crowd to get a seat, then they look at you like crap when you step on their toes.
steelblade 25-03-2004, 09:05 What about the people who wait until they are on the bus then start rumaging around in their pockets/bags for their bus pass/bus fare.
They really get on my nerves.
Also the kids and students who know full well they are going to be asked for their pass but still don't have it ready. When I get on the bus I always have my student weekly saver in hand and my student card, it's no trouble and it keeps things quick and simple, why can't everyone do that!!!
I have an issue with some bus drivers. They seem to be on some sort of Nazi inspired power trip, full of self importance. Now i'm not saying they are all like this but what makes a person get pleasure from pulling away at the last moment when there is a woman who is struggling with several shopping bags running for her life just to catch the bus. And it wouldn't kill them to smile and responed with something other than a grunt whenb you say thankyou. I know they get some **** but there is no need to be as rude as some of them are, its like they have let the size of their vehicle go to their heads!!
steelblade 25-03-2004, 09:12 Well thinking of how stressed I get with other people on the bus I can totally understand why the bus drivers bahave as they do. Their stress levels must be through the roof.
uncleheed 25-03-2004, 09:42 Let me lay some myths to rest about bus drivers.
I am a bus driver and i never have any trouble with ANY of my passengers. The reason being i have a smile for them all,and a pleasant bit of chit chat. The reason for this is that it is them who pay my wages. The reason some drivers have a face like a dropped pie,is they let the job get to them. It's like any other job,if you hate it before you get there, you will be in a bad mood all day.
Some drivers also get a peverse pleasure in upsetting people, these are the drivers who always get the arguments from passengers.I get thank yous and reply to everyone. Most of the drivers who are grumpy are the ones who have been there for 20+ years.
The job is stressfull, but only if you let it be.Above all it is also VERY EASY,because all i do i sit on my fat arse in a traffic jam,and get paid for it!
steelblade 25-03-2004, 09:45 Uncleheed let's see if you are still as pleasant a few years down the line :D
uncleheed 25-03-2004, 10:05 Courtesy cost's nothing steelblade,however long you do a job.
I hate sitting next to other males on buses as we tend to do this macho thing of sitting with our legs wide apart. It can be real pain to sit next to another bloke doing the same thing. Of course neither will say anything to the other, or give in, and will just tough it out. Very irritating.
Of course the legroom on many buses is insufficient for tall males and forces us to sit like that. It also a reason why I will use the aisle seat, leaving the window seat empty, because that is often the only comfortable way of sitting. It is either that or sit with my knees propped up on the back of the seat in front. I will move though if another passenger needs the space.

I agree, I usually sit at an angle with my knees diagonal from the window because there simply isn't any room for them. I'm only 5 foot 6/7 so god help anyone taller than me!
Dont forget...seats are for SITTING on, not for carrying your bloody shopping bags.

*cough* It's not like there's anywhere else to place our shopping though, unless they expect us to carry it on our knees...
*Twinkle* 25-03-2004, 16:22 If the bus isnt particulary busy, I put my bags/folders on the seat next to me... Why should I have them on my knee or on the loppy floor when no-one needs that seat. Ofcourse I'd move them if the bus filled up, because I'd expect someone to do the same for me!

I havent heard that one before, it is MARVY!
:D
can I add to this the idiots who sit on trains, the ones who are travelling alone but sit on the four seater tables then look really ****** off when 3 of you sit on the other seats and place your kid right opposite them.
We were coming back from Leeds once on one of those teeny weeny over packed cattle carriages that Virgin provide, there were sooo many people having to stand and there was a guy who was sat on one seat, laptop taking up another and his brief case on another, my daughter can be pretty loud and voiced what everyone else was thinking and eventually he moved his stuff, but why did it take a 4 year old to point out the obvious?

Thats what I meant...its all well and good using the seat to carry your stuff when the bus is empty, but when Ive been standing up at work for 8 hours, and some *** on the bus has got their shopping on the last "empty" seat, Ill tell them to shift it.
What about the people who insist on siting in the buggy/wheelchair bays....when there are seats available further up the bus .. they allways seem to make a big fuss when a mother or wheelchair user gets on ..i tend to clip thier legs and feet with the pram.. and if they dont like it i switch to P.M.T mode hehe

Its not a macho thing, I am 6'5 and i have to sit either legs apart or out at an angle. Only other option is to break my legs...

I know what you mean! I never sit in the pram bay even when its the only place left, because you can bet your bottom dollar someone with a pram will get on just as you get comfy. I always sit towards the back and leave them to it. It must be so hard for a mother to get on the bus with a baby and bags of shopping, pay and get sat down without someone being reluctant to move for them.
You should see it on the 48's... Now that is shocking. I've seen women laden with bags, clutching onto their prams as ignorant people sit in the pram bay and refuse to move. Its sickening... They'd expect people to move for them if they had a pram.

Yep, I see that happen at least twice a week if not more, and I've yet to see a bus driver ask passengers to move out of those seats.

You all never had it so good!
When my kids were of a pram using age,we never had such a thing as "buggy priority bays".We had to get on the bus with umpteen bags of shopping,a baby under one arm,and a folded up pram in the other! When people are asked to fold a pram up when there is no room on the bus for it,they look at you like they have just stepped in something.
If you stop trying to copy Posh Spice and buying designer buggies, you might be able to fold it up and sit anywhere on the bus.
And don't come with that "it'll just squeeze in that gap" when 2 are already on.If it says 2 prams,it means 2 prams. If that bus was in an accident with more than the legal limit of buggies/wheelchairs,the driver would be fore the high jump, and all insurance would be void,so you couldn't phone claims direct up when you see the advert during Trisha!
Of course there was a time when old ladies, pregnant women etc used to thank the kids for giving up their seats. Nowadays the kids just get a 'I should think so' look. Can't expect the younger folk to respect these people when they aren't getting respect (or gratitude) in return.
Then there's the small matter of parents being told that their kids MUST be belted in when belts are fitted, whilst on the other hand there are so-called wise old people who expect those same kids to risk serious injury on their behalf by standing in the aisle on a crowded bus.
The only person allowed to tell a child (or anyone) to give up their seat is the child's guardian on that journey. After all, the child has a paid ticket and has a right to a seat, and if a lady gets on and notices that there's no seat for her its up to her to either get the next bus or stand until a seat becomes vacant.
Don't get me wrong, I did tell my kids to stand on buses, but how does the legal issue lie when a kid is BULLIED into standing then gets hurt.

I have a habit of attracting weirdos - me and a friend were on the top deck of a bus, the only 2 people on the top and sat at the front, one either side of the aisle. This weird gentlemen asks me to budge up, when the rest of the bus is empty.
We moved to the back.
This has happened twice, the sooner I get a car the better.
steelblade 31-03-2004, 08:10 er i didn't mean I do weird things like that! :D

Dude, you were probably sitting in 'his' seat.
Several times I've been sitting in the top front seat when someone else comes up the stairs then glares at me, just for getting on the bus first and happening to like the same place as them.
Rusted Root 14-04-2004, 13:18 Ugh I know I always say this to everyone but ...
Working on the buses can be very stressfull and is really a pretty nasty job. After a day of being shouted at by people who won't pay the extra 5p on a fare, or by other people who insist that five children over the age of eight are still free, wouldn't it get you down? Plus when you do explain to them for the fiftieth time that they must pay or cannot travel you either get a faceful of saliva or an earful!
Not to mention being knifed (this hasn't happened to my family yet thank god), having bricks thrown through your windscreen, recieving yet another earful from drivers who cut ya up and other stuff like that.
All I'm saying is before you critisize someone first try walking a mile in their shoes.
Also the dude who says don't let the job get to him, well good for you!! :)
There yet another rant. Sorry.
A little annecdote of mine, don't know whether it casts a bad light on the driver of the bus or the hapless passenger, but here goes...
For the past two years my partner and I have spent a few days in Whitby and traveller there on the bus service that leaves Sheffield station on a National Express coach and then changes at Leeds to a single decker bus for a long haul up to the northern extremes of Yorkshire.
The bus makes one stopover at a small market town to change drivers and during the break one of the passengers nipped off the bus for a p*** after the departing driver told him he had a good five minutes before the next driver turned up. Two minutes later the new driver got on the bus, started the engine, shrugged as the other passengers told him about the erstwhile absentee and his bladder, then pulled away leaving the bloke stranded and without his luggage to boot.

OOOO.. who got off his bus the wrong side this morning .
for your information I do not have a big posh spice pram.I have a small buggy for my baby and usually I have my 9 year old disabled child with me also. Dont get me wrong but this is the exact reason that these busses are being used.to make life easer for people like me .so no i cant just sit anywhere on a bus.and usually the driver is chucking us up and down the isles before I can guide my child to a seat..so yes i do like to use the priority bays . and just for the record I dont get time to sit at home and watch trisha I am too busy at work... Dont judge others by your own standards
