Yesterday I drove to college only to discover that over the weekend double yellow lines have been painted all the way along Livesey Street. I drove round the corner towards Bassetts expecting to park there but the double yellows go all the way to the end of the road right up to the bridge by the scrap yard.

The council are doing a pretty good job of encouraging people to catch the bus. I don't mind catching the bus on certain days but if I have daytime courses followed by an evening course I dont want to catch the bus. It takes me exactly an hour to get home from college as opposed to 20 mins in the car.

I'm sure people that work at Bassetts also park on Livesey street when their car park is full.

Q. Where are you supposed to park?
A. You are supposed to get the bus.

At the end of the day, Double Yellow lines aren't placed there to be an inconvenience, they are also there for the safety of Car users and Pedestrians!

So you can't park there? Big deal.......Im prepared to park 10 mins away and have a steady trot down?

Matt

I don't mind parking away from the college but where do you park?

All the car parks near by ie... B&Q, Morrisons or the one behind farmfoods are all for shoppers.

I agree with you to an extent, Im not trying to have a dig at you at all!

Overall I feel that planning would have been done to prevent this problem....

I worked on there fitting the Plumbing, and I noticed the lack of parking!

There are still parking permits available for the college car park. There are usually spaces there at any time of the day and night.

I am completely and utterly gobsmacked at the new yellow lines on livesy street.

The reasons i have heard for them being put down is for public health and safety i.e the trucks are having trouble getting past...

Fair enough i say, but by double yellowing the road they have put A LOT of people out of a parking space, without offering any alternatives.

Alternatives that could and will be suggested are....

1) Allow for parking on the wider pavement at the back of bassets, and for parking on the land that is chained off by the dog stadium and apparently doing nothing (Thin strip that could get maybe 10-15 cars bay parked on). People may appose the parking on the pavement due to pedestrians getting past. but i have never seen any pedestrians down there!

2) aquire land around the college i.e the "private" yet empty car park belonging to a company next to college- at a cost.

3) Aquire parking spaces from owlerton stadium- at a cost.

4) Over turn the new yellow lines on certain bits of the road that are wide enought for cars to be parked AND for trucks to get past. Or only double yellow one side of the road.

5) open college car park on a first come first served basis.

6) turn college car park into a sort of mini multistory- this would never happen due to cost and planning permission.

People may ask why not just accept your loss and get the bus... well like others i have many reasons why i dont want to get the soddin bus!

My main one being having just spent about £2,000 on the luxary of having a car, learning to drive, paying tax, paying mot and getting insurance (for an 18 year old it is sky high as you know) and then being told- actually no you can't drive to college- yes i could easily walk from my house but if i wanted to walk i would!

Other reasons include the apparent lack of public transport that runs any where near college. Its not so bad in the warmer months but i dont really enjoy tackling penistone road in the rain, getting drenched by cars, arriving to college, cold, wet and looking like a drowned rat.

Today when i got to college i saw a mother hauling her two young children down the road to college having obviously either parked somewhere else or being forced onto the tram. It was obviously a great inconvienience to her but what else can she do? Get a ticket?!

The people at college don't care and some teachers are finding it quite amusing but i think they have forgotten that without students they will not have a job or a college.

They will loose students because of this, students who travel from accross the city and depend on public transport will ignore the "luxaries" of a new college and new facilities and just go to less desired place nearer them. There will be an increase in lateness/absenses because of relying on public transport. It was the same at loxley when i was there last year- morning lessons didnt start until sometimes 9:30 and afternoon lessons 1:30.

Alternative parking is; Morrisons, B&Q,Macdonalds (run the risk of getting clamped and might as well get on the tram)
Car Park on Bradfield road (again might as well get on the tram)

As you can see i am not a happy bunny about this- the only thing college say we can do it write a letter to the director and one to the council- which i will be doing but apart from that people just seem to be accepting this ridiculous stunt....

Has anyone noticed that big car park across the road from the college.

I cant believe this - ever heard of a college for students that doesnt have student parking - how ridicious!!! Only tutors can park in the college car park!!

The car park where the dog track is is guarded by a guy that makes you pay!!

I go to Hillsborough college in an afternoon straight from work. I also live at the other side of town so I have to drive to college. If I dont drive to college I would have to get about 3 buses home!!!

Not a happy bunny!!!

It is a permit car park, and there is a guard. I think they also clamp people without permits.

I got a ticket today £60 fine but reduced to £30 if I pay within 14 days.

I did not park my car on the yellows but on the very wide pavement on Livesey street. I know it's a pavement but why would anyone want to walk down there? It only leads to the scrap yard and the graveyard.

A line of cars got tickets today.

Not a happy bunny.

Now all you have to do is find good grounds to appeal on.
Kipling: What about a prize of £10 for the best successful suggestion?

Please be aware that as of tomorrow, B&Q will be operating a new parking system in it's car park. Using ANPR, a camera will note all registrations of cars arriving and leaving. You will only get 90 mins free parking, if you stay over this time, an automatic £95 fine will be sent out to you (reduced to £75, if paid within 14 days).

I know there are a few people from the college that use it as well as Reg Vardys staff and Wednesdayites on match days........so be warned.

it might sound like a stupid question to some, but where can you apply for a permit for Owlerton Dog Track car park? And how much do they cost?

I used to park in Hillsborough park car park, only a ten minute walk down to college 5 minutes if it's raining and you run

EDIT: If you have kids in the nursery there you can have a card that allows you to park in the college car park, I know someone who did this

and what is wrong with that  Doesn't matter what age the mothers are it's better all round if the young kiddies don't get soaked walking/ being carried to college

and i'm not sure anyone at 17 is going to think it's ok to have kids because they can park in the car park at college lol

I'm not going to read a whole forum to find the answer to a simple question.

It appears that a lot of those threads are about the legality of council issued tickets, which B&Q are certainly not capable of issuing.
The only way B&Q could enforce a ticket is through the small claims court, and I doubt it would be worth it for them.

Clamping would be far more effective as you have to pay in order to be able to drive your car away, plus it's lower tech and less open to vandalism.
I'll give 50/50 odds on the cameras making it past the first week intact.

sorry about that, its the only link I've got at the moment, but they do discuss private parking areas and the legallity of tickets (petrol station near heathrow) and apparantly its full of holes. Well worth the trawl through if you have the time

Has anyone noticed that oppisite the college and to the left of the dog track (where most people dump their cars on pavement and grass) that there is actually a carpark thatis owned by someone else and fenced off? This never gets used so why doesn't someone see about getting it open any students maybe paying a small some to park there for the term. Just a thought.

The scheme is NOT being run by B&Q. It has been given to a private company, working in conjunction with the DVLA who will issue the fines.

The strange thing was on Saturday that there must have been at least 20 cars who parked in B&Q on Saturday for the game dispite all the warning notices and the cameras being installed!

Where are these cameras then, I was at B&Q 20 mins ago and couldnt' see them (I saw the notices though).

As you drive in they are on the corner of the building pointing directly at the entrance/exit. 2 cameras on a metal frame about 3/4 of the way up the side.

The double yellow lines are being re-done all the way along Livesey Street today. If you are one of those people that have been parking where the lines had rubbed off completely, you'll need to find somewhere else to park!

after going to the stock cars on monday in the programme it said...

"a massive redevelopment of what currently houses the stock car pits and the former speedway training track will see a 300+ car parking facility to accomadate the university opposite."

i presume they mean the college as i for one have been to the former training track many a time an know its directly opposite the college its currently direlect as the training track shutdown earlier in the year. for those who dont know it has big rusty gates which are always shut i hope this is true although i hated to see the training track go i cant think of a better thing to do with it as ive been watching cars get tickets for the past few weeks!! and knowing i might be able to drive within a year seems a bit daunting as a new driver finding somewhere to park!!
