Not as long ago as me! I was there 1953 to 1959, and I remember my first day vividly as I (and a few others) were tied to our chairs with skipping rope because we tried to run away. Imagine that happening today.

my first school circa 1950, i think it put me off education forever. they had a dental clinic there which used pliers and gas to remove teeth, I can still smell and taste the stuff.only there a few months then went on to Bents green for the next 10 years. not a very good start academicly.

Never attended there as a pupil but our army cadet unit(York and Lancs) practiced there in the fifties. Used the schoolyard for square bashing and we had a room for blackboard lessons etc.
The rifles that we used for rifle drill were old first world war Lee-
Enfields and were kept on the caretaker's cellar steps. Imagine THAT today.

Probably just missed each other. I joined sometime in the early 50s (53-54 I think) and left to join the T.A. (Hallamshires) about 1957. Dates are a little hazy at this point in time. I'm 66 so I'm guessing that you're probably a little older.

Hi thai, I bet that Jennifer Loukes will recall me, although we were only 8 at the time, I was then:

'' A mardy bum, a cry baby, and equal top of the class with Judith Dodd all the time.''

After I left 42 Commando I became a Solicitor/Company Secretary. I am 6ft 2in, 16 stone 7 lbs and no-one has bullied me ever since. A few tried, but I found that when looking down the barrel of an SLR (and I don't mean a Single Lens Reflex camera ) bullies seemed to '' lose weight rapidly ''.

I bet 10 bob that Jennifer knows who I am.

Kind regards.

Hi thai, that would be nice. I think that the little girl whose dad got killed was called Shirley, or Sylvia, Jubb. If I remember correctly her dad worked for the telephone company and was killed in a telegraph pole incident, but, I thought that the pole actually fell on him, although he did climb up poles as part of his job, and the irony was that he wasn't killed by a fall - although this might have been '' playground talk ''.

He was a smashing bloke, quite short and stocky with short black curly hair. If I recall correctly they lived on Harrington Road, a hilly road just behind Queens Road. I used to go down it on my trolley.

Kindest regards to all.

I don't believe this ! You must, from Sharrow Lane, have also known a few of the following:
David Buxton, Keith Badger, Christopher Polomski, Andrew Plaxton, Steven Cosgrave, Phillip Smith, John Townley, Alan Cotterill, Terrie Sigsworth (my heartthrob), Dawn Tomlinson, Veronica Robertson, Yvonne ''x?'' and James Grant.
I used to wag off from assembly by doing that bloody weather station.

Who was that lad who was excellent at rounders and used to hit the ball over the wall as he was left- handed. I think that he used to live in Club Garden Road ?

Yes you are right they are twins. It was theie younger brother Keith who was the year below me at school. Hazel went to King Ecgberts and when I went there in 1965 Hazel was in the 5th year.

What a small world it is. Just found this post today and only read it because my recollections of Lowfield are only of the horrible visits to the dentist :gag:!

The first coincidence is that I started my education school at Sharrow Lane, but was only there for a few months as we moved house, so recall nothing much at all.

Secondly (hence the quote above) I was at King Ecgbert's with Hazel Proctor and at school and since then, I have been called Hazel in a variety of jobs!! I have no idea why the teachers got our names mixed, unless it was because we had the same hairstyles (although different colours as I was blonde) and we both wore specs.

If I remember rightly, her twin, Neil, married one of our class mates, Judith Semmens, one half of another set of twins with Jennifer. As far as I know, the marriage didn't last, but Judith is/was in accountancy and at one time, had her own company and I worked for her for a short time in the late 80's, but the the last I heard, the company had closed.

Have come to this thread very late and am fascinated to see so many names from my dim and distant past!!:suspect:
I am the aforementioned Jennifer Loukes and remember most of the people very vividly. David Drew probably remembers me (unless he's had a LOT of therapy) because I used to try to kiss him at every opportunity and I was a lot bigger than him! His rejection of me put me off blondes for life. Does everyone else remember the small, hidden bit of playground next to the police box? The likes of David Drew would give it a wide berth if I was in the vicinity!
Shirley (Marsh ) was the girl who's dad was killed and she was a very good friend of mine-even after she'd got a gang to call for me and beat me up when we were in J2 (I think). My Best Friend in juniors was Joy Hunter who came with some of the others (Judith, Carol Proctor, Janet Hand etc) from Duchess Rd Infants. We lost touch after going to different secondary schools. As for the "cry baby, Mardy bum"-is that you John Mather??
Fascinating stuff.:surprised

Hi
I was there in the fifties. The headmistress was a Miss Clark- awful woman. There was a school dental clinic there as well. I remember some of the teachers there -a Mr Walsh, Mr Clifford, Mr Robinson, Mrs Dalton and a Miss Simon. My friends were Jackie Short, Margaret Howe, and Sandra Asquith -where are you now girls?
