View Full Version : Jimmy Crawford?
melthebell 05-02-2006, 16:21 Just got a pm on another site asking for info on said person cos he knew i came from sheffield, so thought id post it here and see if any of you lot have any info / anecdotes etc
"any chance you remember a guy called Jimmy Crawford who was quite big in the 70-80's? I know he came from Sheffield, had a drummer in his band called Roy Dell (My Dad) along with "big Jim Ryder" etc.
Any info or music much appreciated. I have only one album of his, on vinyl called "The Blend Of Jimmy Crawford". It's a mix of popular pop songs (easy listening genre) from the era etc, no punk or metal. "
PaulTansley 05-02-2006, 16:38 I got the impression Jimmy Crawford was from an earlier generation than you make out.
He was from the mid 60s and died last year.
Now I could be wrong here as I may have got the wrong Crawford.
I await the big boys, Timbuck, Timo and Buck who are the experts on this field.
Jimmy Crawford, real name Ron Lyndsay, I believe I first saw him one Saturday morning in 1957 at the Cinama at Fitzalan Sq, later to become known as "The News Theatre".
He was billed as "Ron Lyndsay and the Coasters" I believe..and the bass player was called "Art Jacobs" and the guitarist was a very young "Frank White"...Later on he change his name and became "Jimmy Crawford and the ravens"...More to follow but my memory needs a jog.
melthebell 05-02-2006, 18:10 *waits for timbucks memory to take aslow jog round the block*

Jimmy Crawford: “I Shoulda Listened to Mama” / “A Boy Without a Girl” (Columbia) about 1963 I think
wasn't he the same =Ron Lyndsay and the Coasters=Jimmy Crawford and the ravens
He lived in aberdeen st just of the old broomhall area yrs back, fantastic swimmer by the way,if my memory is correct he played water polo, and swam for sheffield at glossop rd baths.

One night in the 60,s I went to the "Sicy Hotel" to see a new band visiting the area, They were very good and featured a lot of comedy routines, like taking the mickey out of pop groups of the time like the "Beatles" and the "Shadows" doing the old song "Nellie Dean" it was very funny (but you had to be there)..I can't remember the name of this group but the guitar man was "Big Jim ryder" perhaps someone can fill in these details later...Anyway, this group later on became Jimmy Crawfords backing band for a while...Then they split ( like bands do) Our band was working in a club one night in Hartlepool and the support act was "Jim Ryder" he did a great show all on his todd and I especialy remember him playing an instrumental on the guitar called "The theme from The Good the Bad & the Ugly"..Later on he rejoined Jimmy and they became a double act..I don't remember the name but they were on the "New Faces show" on TV..I remember they had turned into Mexicans??
Not much of an expert on pop music , past or present , but I do have a few vague memories of a ' Jimmy Crawford ' , a Sheffielder .
He got to be a ' name ' in Sheffield at about exactly the same time as Dave Berry so that might help with the dates ?
Whereas Dave Berry was tall and dark , I think Jimmy Crawford had blonde hair and was average height .
I think the ' The News Theatre ' reference was a bit odd ? I think it had been the News Theatre for years before the 1960's and Dave Berry and Jimmy Crawford must have been getting well-known in the early 1960's ? May be wrong there and apologies in advance if I've got it mixed up .
Applegrim 05-02-2006, 21:13 Jimmy Crawford was from the sixties, along with Dave Berry, and Joe Cocker,
I think his most well known song was "I love how you love me", I think he lived somewhere down Twentywell Lane Bradway, was married to Maureen, I am almost sure his name was Ron Lindsay, but I didn't know he'd died so I am shocked.
Applegrim 05-02-2006, 21:19 While looking back to the sixties, does anyone remember "Johnny Hawk and the Falcons"? Like Joe Cocker and Dave Berry they did the rounds in the sixties, quite good at the time I think.
PaulTansley 06-02-2006, 19:30 I think Dave Berry visits this forum from time to time, he would come in usfull on this thread.
I last recall Jimmy Crawford playing at the Marquis of Granby in Bamford about 3 years ago.

I'm not 100% sure that it was the "News Theatre" it could have been the "Gaumont"..But it was a cinama in central Sheffield that put bands on Saturday mornings in the late 50's (pre Beatles era)..Most bands that were established in those days were swing bands or Jazz (blowing trumpets clarinet's and saxophones) like The "Bernard Taylor orchestra" or "The Sheaf Valley Stompers" Electric guitar based bands were the leading edge in music in those days, Rock and Roll was just begining in Sheffield.
melthebell 06-02-2006, 21:49 lol@ The Sheaf Valley Stompers
sounds cool
did they go swimming? errrrrrm
I have many great memories of seeing Jimmy Crawford perform in and around Sheffield during the sixties.
The last time I heard Jimmy was on Radio Derby about two or three years ago when he was on a phone in programme along with Dave Berry. The two of them were talking about their memories of the sixties.
Jimmy was at that time living in Chaddesdon area of Derby.
Jimmy crawford is alive and well. He had a bad car accident last year but is well on the road to recovery. Should be back on the club circuit shortly
oldrowley 09-02-2006, 10:41 There is an excellent book on popular music in Sheffield 1955-1975 called Not Like A Proper Job by John Firminger and Martin Lilleker. It has comprehensive sections on all the local groups etc including Jimmy Crawford and all the usual suspects. Highly recommended.
Hope I can contribute as a newbie. I was a projectionist as the Gaumont in the early 60s and worked on the lighting for all stage shows including the saturday morning live stage shows. jimmy crawford, dave berry & others were just a few of the artists featured. The manager, Harry Murray, started these shows around 1961 and they ran till (i think) 65 or 66. Enjoying the site as an ex sheffield lad now resident in portugal.
rainbow2411 11-02-2006, 16:26 Jimmy Crawford, Dave Berry & Frank White are due to play a charity gig at the Abbeydale Cinema sometime around Spring 2006, not sure of the exact date.
june page 13-02-2006, 11:51 My husband Barry Page played drums with Jimmy Crawford from about 1977 (when he did a six month tour of Australia with him) and 1981. Big Jim Ryder was on guitar and Gary Lawson (from Sunderland) was on keyboards. Sadly, Gary died about four years ago in Blackpool aged only 39 and Big Jim died in February 05 aged 65.
I last saw Jimmy Crawford at Big Jim's 60th birthday party in Burton on Trent. He was living in Derby with his wife Maureen and planning to sing again (? in a blues band I think). From what someone else has posted on the messageboard it appears he was in a car crash although I have never heard anything myself.
Unfortunately I once had a vinyl LP of Crawford which I lent to a friend and it was never returned to me. If anyone could make me a tape or CD I would be absolutely ecstatic as, I'm sure you will appreciate, they were a fantastic band and I don't think we'll ever see the likes of them again!!
Bye for now

i have some info you might want to hear
Britishpetal 14-02-2006, 02:12 I was told as a kid ... that Jimmy Crawford went to the Central Technical School (as I did later) and made a hit during the early 60s. My (slightly older) cousin thought he was the bee's whatsits! I remember him as a blonde (eh, Fareast?) and had a really good singing voice.
the accident he was in was last march both he and his wife Maureen were badly injured but both have almost made a complete recovery

June Page June.. is there any chance you can find out what the name of the band was, that Big Jim played in before he joined up with Jimmy?..Co's it's driving me nuts trying to remember...Also, it's sad to know Big Jim is no longer around.

Jimmy Crawford and the Messengers was formed in early 1963 after the disbanding of the Ravens. By September 1963 Jimmy had disbanded the Messengers and he teamed up with the Shantells led by Jim Ryder.
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. Great ...Yes i remember the "Shantells" but I remember (or I should say I can't remember) another name the group had for a short while, a short and more simple name that I liked, because it was original..but I could be wrong.
Jimmy Crawford used to live only a few houses away from me in the 70s. He had a xylophone that he used to hammer on, the whole street could hear it on a Sunday morning. I once remember myself & a few mates pushing him, his band and his van in deep Snow. They were supposed to be doing a gig at a working mens club somewhere. We managed to get him to the Walkley club where they played instead.

Ron Lindsay and the Coasters
Jimmy Crawford and the Ravens
Jimmy Crawford and the Messengers
Jimmy Crawford with the Chantelles
The Jimmy Crawford Four
The Jimmy Crawford Blend
This info is all from the good book by Firminger and Elleker about which I posted on 9-2-2006 and as far as I can see covers all the group names that Jimmy was involved with. It does say of course that he also performed and recorded as a solo artist and later with a girl named Jan Lesley.
june page 21-02-2006, 15:58 Hello Melthebell
Yes I'm dying to hear the info! By the way rang a friend of Jim's last week and he and Maureen had been in a car crash but are recovering slowly so that's good news.

How bad was the crash, it sounds horrendous.
Can't note hearing about this in the papers.
Thats what great about this forum, it gives you all the news.
ask your mate to ask Jimmy to say a few words on here, that would be great from the organ grinder, plus he can let us all know what his plans are for any more appearances e.t.c.
Can anyone verify the following
Was Ron Lindsey the artiste and swimmer, the same Ron Lindsey that worked as a radiographer at the English Steel Corporation Grimesthorpe Works on Adsetts Street?
Happy Days!

The Jimmy Crawford 'Ron Lindsay' was a draughtsman at Davy United in the early days apparently.

Ive just found an old " Club Life" booklet with The Jimmy Crawford Four appearing at "Sheffield Lane Club" on Sunday the 29th March 1970...How about dat den?.
Peter Clark 26-06-2006, 23:03 I was a friend of Jmmys in the 60s/70s he came to Brigg in Lincolnshire to perform at the local dance hall "the corn exchange"and autograph his first single "Love or Money" at my friends record shop "Spencer Molloys"
Jimmy later recorded "i love how you love me" getting in the charts.
Jimmy also had a part performing in the Billy Fury film "Play it Cool" directed by Michael Winner.
I remember Jimmy and the Ravens backing Bobby Vee on tour and Jimmy stole the show and arrived at the gaumont cinema in Doncaster in a pink cadilac.
He also had two sets of drummers in the group on that tour.
I remember Frank White in the group but thought he emigrated to australia.
I new Jimmy Ryder as he originated from Scunthorpe and before he formed the group "The Shantels" he was known as Jimmy Ryder and the Nightriders" i think.
Jimmy Crawford was a great entertainer and artist and also spent a spell in las vegas.
Is the Frank White who performs at "The Pheasant" in sheffield Jimmys ex guitarist.
I hope Jimmy and Maureen have fully recovered from the car crash and has anybody got a contact telephone number or address i could have. Peter Clark.
Dunlop St 24-07-2006, 19:56 What a buzz I got seeing all the old names from the late 50s and early 60s.
Sheffield had probably the finest talents in the whole of the country during that period and the whole area was rocking like there was no tomorrow. So many good groups around the place and Jmmy Crawford, Dave Berry and many others were at the top.
They were great years.
Most days the groups seemed to congregate at a coffee bar on Chapel Walk. Jimmy used to walk in often still wearing his stage makeup, thick black hair, with a quiff and collar turned up. Dve B seemed alway to wear his white shoes, very large!
So much talent.
micheleagle 25-07-2006, 04:58 i went to school with jimmy's son dean lindsay though didn't know about his dad then. They left the area in 1971 and Dean went to high storrs i remember him from morley st. we met up for a coffee when did reunion for school, and kept in contact from 2000 since changed his mobile. Did meet with with his old school friend Damien the other week antique dealer on broadfield rd.Picked up a book from charity shop all about those days and the music, but too young in the 60's.

Firminger and Lilleker's excellent tome records Chick Wilson being a rythm guitarist in the Jimmy Crawford and the Ravens line-up of 1962. After disbanding the Ravens, Jimmy emerged with a new line-up 'Jimmy Crawford and the Messengers' in 1963 which included ex-Raven Chick Wilson. The Messengers were short-lived being disbanded in September 1963 when Jimmy teamed up with the Shantells led by Jim Ryder. Chick Wilson does not appear to figure any further in Jimmy's career. Hope this is of interest Sal.
The Jimmy Crawford 'Ron Lindsay' was a draughtsman at Davy United in the early days apparently.
My recollection of Ron is from almost 50 years ago when he was in the drawing office training school at Davy United (D-U), and later when he came into the main engineering office.
It was about the time local bands and groups were just getting started. Some of them were pretty bad. The ones on TV weren't much better. (This was way before Top-of-the-Pops or anything remotely like it).
One lunch time, a bunch of the lads, were moaning about some of the groups playing around town, particularly the vocalists. Someone said to Ron "Why don't you have a go". He said he had been thinking about - and the rest, as they say, is history.
Other contributors to this thread have mention his swimming and of course the groups but I seem to recall that he also loved motor cycles. When I first knew him, he had a top-of-the line Triumph. Does anybody remember him buying a Competion level BSA and doing a bit of racing, or is my memory playing tricks again.
Incidentally, another member of the D-U drawing office gang at that time was Terry Thornton. The same guy who went on to open one of the early clubs on, I think, Leadmill Road.

The Gaumont (originally The Regent Theatre) had a fully equipped stage for shows, whereas the News Theatre did not.
would it be fair to say that jimmy was sheffields first pop artist to have a uk hit.
PaulTansley 28-07-2006, 20:24 He may well have been the first, I have three of Jimmy Crawfords hits including his 1961 hit Love or money.
Dave Berry I think was from Sheffield and wasn't Billy J Kramer from here to.
Bert Weedon was before Crawford but I think he was from the Leeds area.
I will stand corrected if anyone knows.
scryder24 17-08-2006, 10:42 I have come accross this forum and thread quite by accident, but thought i would be able to offer you all a unique perspective. I am the god son of Jimmy Crawford, and the eldest son on the late "Big" Jim Ryder.
I can confirm that Jimmy Crawford has made a successful recovery from his serious car crash and that has started perfroming again. I went to see him perform at a club on Saturday just gone near where i live, a club that the "blend" had played a few times in the past. My dad, Jim Ryder, sadly passed away last year.
Both my brother and i are proud to say we have followed in the footsteps of our dad and Jimmy Crawford, as we are both musicians (i play drums and my brother is a Saxophonist Bmus).
Should you have any questions, please post here, as now i have discovered this site i will look in on it alot.
Cheers
Peter Clark 17-08-2006, 11:10 HI TO THE SON OF BIG JIM RYDER ,SO PLEASED TO HEAR JIMMY HAS RECOVERED FROM HIS CAR ACCIDENT.
COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE ME CONTACT DETAILS FOR JIMMY CRAWFORD BY EMAIL
peterclarkcllr@clark2.e7even.com
PS. THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A TRIBUTE GIG IN SCUNTHORPE TO YOUR DAD INCLUDING JIMMY CRAWFORD BUT NOTHING HAS COME OF IT.
I WILL CONTACT THE SOURCE OF MY INFORMATION AND CHASE IT UP.
REGARDS,
PETER CLARK.
scryder24 17-08-2006, 11:50 Thanks for the reply. I will certainly pass on your e-mail address to him. I will not however give out any details without consulting him first.
I did hear there was going to be a gig at Scunthorpe, i think maybe at the baths. I was fortunate to perform there with my dad at the 60's megabash 2 or 3 years on the trot. At the time his band was called Platinum, but for the megabash they adopted the name The Jim Ryder band. We certainly enjoyed playing there.
We had a tribute show for my dad not long after he passed away, near where i live. It was a charity event which we raised quite a lot of money for. Jimmy was going to perform, however this was not long after his accident, and therefore could not.
Any info on the gig in Scunthorpe would be welcome, and if it goes ahead, my brother and i will attend for sure.

Ron used to race his bike. It had a 2inch amal carb & he used to run it up & down Davy United's drive at dinner. He was also a good mimic. He scared off a reporter from the news of the world who came to the training school about a bird sunbathing in the nuddy in a house behind the school by pretending to be a rampant homo. Bikes were in during that era. Most of us had something but preferably Nortons Dominators, various Triumphs or Velocette Vipers or Venoms. Derbyshire was deadly at weekends!!
Great times for bikes and rock bands.
i came across this site while looking for info on Jimmy Crawford.
my Dad is Geoff Theaker who played bass with the "Four" towards the end of the sixties. we lived in Scunthorpe until 86. Geoff now lives in Scarborough.
He always talked of the band being the time of his life and often tells stories about Big Jim, Jimmy, Graham and that whole period.
would love to hear more if anyone knew him at that time...
used to watch Jimmy Crawford at the Gaumont along with other groups and films in 1959 to60s it was the Saturday club and packed with teenagers anybody remember it?

Hi I have just found your entry when searching for information on people that I knew in the 1960s. I am sorry to hear of Jims death. I knew him in the early1960s in Scunthorpe and he was one of the most genuine guys in the business apart from being a real pro. I never played with him but played in groups with his other associates like Paddy O Conner, Pete "fenwick"Johnson and Pete Hornsby.
After I left Scunthorpe in the late 1960s I lost touch
Best regards Les Goddard
steviestix 07-08-2007, 20:44 Hi Salsunshine7 Yes Chic Wilson did play for Jimmy Crawford in the early sixties along with Frank White, Kenny Slade, and Gran Lawman. I Would love to see the photo. Regards. Steve Wilson

re Ronald James William Crawford Lindsay
Ron Lindsay and the Coasters
Jimmy Crawford and the Ravens
Jimmy Crawford and the Messengers
Jimmy Crawford with the Chantelles
The Jimmy Crawford Four
The Jimmy Crawford Blend
This info is all from the good book by Firminger and Elleker about which I posted on 9-2-2006 and as far as I can see covers all the group names that Jimmy was involved with. It does say of course that he also performed and recorded as a solo artist and later with a girl named Jan Lesley.
At last I think I remember the name of the Band...It was "The Vine" am I right or wrong???
PaulTansley 11-09-2008, 18:07 Instead of opening a new thread on Jimmy I thought I would just add to this one.
I have secured an interview with Jimmy who will join me on a Rock n Roll years special on Sheffield Live in October.
Any fans of Jimmy and there is a lot of them shouldn't miss this, he will be discussing his life in Rock n roll and the people he has worked with and there are many.
I have also persuaded Jimmy to tell us about the ones he didn't like working with to.
I will be playing his singles from 1961, talking about his life in Sheffield before taking up a music career and his music relationship with Karen Moore and Frank White.
We will also be playing music from the era hand picked by Jimmy himself and will be the original crackly vynals...
Keep you posted.
Paul
paulsbabe 18-09-2008, 10:15 I get him mixed up with Jimmy Clitheroe but must admit I've not heard much about Jimmy Crawford.
I bet he won`t remember I once babysat for him many many years ago. To be honest I didn`t myself till my sister reminded me. I can`t even recall how it came about now.

Theres not that much about him on the internet suprisingly I wanted to read up on him for the interview but the info just wasn't there.
Thats why I am meeting him in person for lunch and a beer in a Sheffield pub, hopefully beers are on Jimmy lol.
He is bringing his biography which is very interesting as he toured with the Beatles in 1965 and many more big names.
He is also a nice chap to talk to which helps.
PS:LOL Jimmy Clitheroe was the comedian with the school blazer and a cap.
paulsbabe 29-09-2008, 09:21 Ah yeah I remember Jimmy Clitheroe now, in fact my boyfriend used to call me by that name when I had this black blazer which I conveniently lost in a taxi LOL
PaulTansley 08-10-2008, 15:21 Heres a pic of my pre show meeting with Jimmy taken in The harlequin on Tues Oct 7 2008.

The site of course is in its early stages and you can find it on www.jimmycrawford.co.uk
His paintings are on there to and are worth a look at.

I remember Jimmy Crawfords sister Jeanette Lindsay, she was in my class at Greystones sec mod 1956-1960. His hit single was around that time, if my memory serves me correctly, and we were all quite giddy that we knew a girl whose brother was a pop star!! Where are all those from Greystones of that time?
willybite 22-04-2009, 18:52 hi i'm going back sixty years i remember ron lindsay from our school days at springfield school in sheffield his last teacher would have been mrs taylor that was in 1948, he passed the 11+ exam,he lived at the bottom of aberdeen street on the opposite side of the road lived raymond and michael naylor.
i only saw him on stage once that was 1957/8 at the st philips wmc sheffield.the last time i saw him was on t.v. on an evening with ?? sorry.
I thought his name was Johnny Crawford. He used to visit his mum who lived on Broomhall St. Reason I think this is true is that I used to work at Viners from end of `61 till mid `63 and we used to spot him in his pink Cadillac.
If anyone KNOWS different though I will stand corrected because it`s a long time ago now.
Jimmy Crawfords real name if memory serves me! Is Ronald James Crawford Lindsay. (see my previous post above) I had no idea he was such a talented artist!
bobbikins 30-04-2009, 13:01 Just got a pm on another site asking for info on said person cos he knew i came from sheffield, so thought id post it here and see if any of you lot have any info / anecdotes etc
I remember a GIG that he did that was an all nighter in an old church next door to the millmoor football ground ( rotherham FC ) With mates of mine the Debbonaires. He had aready done a gig earlier that evening and turned up to this place were around six groups were performing and as there was no dressing room he wanted to wash this hair and had do it in the toilets along side the rest of the fellas.

limelight 25-09-2010, 17:38 I saw the Jimmy Crawford Blend several times playing working men's clubs in the north east in the late 60s. the line-up as I recall consisted of Jimmy, Big Jim and a guitarist called John. Can anyone elaborate as I have seen no mention of John on this forum.

Big Jim died but John Alexander (Perks) i'm told by Jimmy went to live in Benidorm....
I remember Jimmy Crawford singing at the Lacarno (Sp) on Friday nights. He also did charity work back then driving handicaped children to the various Hospitals

I remember Jimmy riding on the tractor that towed the rake around the speedway track between races. I was also there the night that Guy Allott the Tigers' captain fell off the tractor and was ran over by the rake and badly injured.

As someone else wrote earlier, Jimmy Crawford was called Ron Lindsay
earlier on. You'll find some of his songs on youtube.com
Ron and his group started in the early 60s. My sister was friends with
his cousin at school. You can "google" him too.
Jimmy Crawford real name Ron Lindsay was an architect by trade and made it big in Sheffield in the 60´s with The Jimmy Crawford Experience. He had a hit record in 1964 with a song called I love how you love me. He now lives in Derby. I last saw Jimmy in 2003 at The Marquis of Granby Hope Valley during a 1960 Sheffield music night. On the bill was Dave Berry, Jimmy Crawford and Sheffields answere to the Everly brothers "Mickey and Johnny". I played guitar for Mickey and Johnny (Dave and Trev) along with Carey Bayliss and Nick Reaney both from The Acoustic Angels. Hope this helps
Jimmy Crawford (Ron Lindsay) Used to keep his motor bike in our shop when I lived on South Street,in the Park District before Parkhill Flats was built. He was going out with one of the neighbours daughter Valerie Hill at the time.
tigerman 18-07-2011, 22:31 Not much of an expert on pop music , past or present , but I do have a few vague memories of a ' Jimmy Crawford ' , a Sheffielder .
May be wrong there and apologies in advance if I've got it mixed up .
dave berry and jimmy crawford used to go to sheffeild speedway regular.

Jimmy had a couple of hits but not in 1964, they were in 1961, I love how you love me reached number 18 and was relunctantly released early.
I remember the Marquis of Granby gig I think it was Crawfords first gig after that almost fatal car crash.
