What skills do you have which someone would pay for?

I had an idea the other day, "Rent a dog" ....:hihi: I know crazy...
I don't own a dog but I look after some one else's 1 or 2 day's a week and I love it...
I've been walking for miles through fields, Parks and woods in all this great weather with a friend who listen to all my mistakes but never judges me, doesn't care which way we go just loves the exercise, doesn't argue or talk back and and is over joyed to be outside instead of being shut up at home, another bonus is if anyone catches me talking to my self I just crack on I 'm talking to the dog, magic.
No vet bills, food bills or pet insurance, and best of all when I've had enough I just take him back..
They train dogs for all sorts of jobs so why not taking people for walks ?

Absolutely awesome idea. And so very true. They don't really care where they go, just happy with the walkies!

Hmm!

I think before you jump into this you need to decide what your market is? In other words, who is going to want to pay you for this "rent a dog" service? Is it local to where you live? Is it Sheffield wide? Nationwide? Who are your customers, the young, the old, the middle-aged? Male? Female? What are they willing to pay? Can you make a profit from it? What are their attitudes towards the service you are considering offering? Is there a big demand for it? What obstacles will you face in trying to get this off the ground and what things will really drive the uptake of it? How will you let people know about the service? Word of mouth? Advertising? etc etc

You need to think also about things like insurance as well. What would happen if one of the dogs you rented to someone ended up getting runover, or biting someone's leg off, or simply ran away? What liability would be upon you as the renter?

I'm not trying to put you off btw - indeed there may be a demand for this - I personally am sceptical - but that's not important. The important thing is to do some thorough research first to make sure there is a demand for it - and that you can meet that demand within the capacity that you have - otherwise you will be wasting your time and money.

(and could end up in the doghouse!)

If you could, I could see my mother renting a dog so often she might aswell get another. :hihi:

I reckon that could work as a business model!

Of course, I hasten to add I have never or ever expect to run a business, but knowing dog lovers I could well see some wanting to sponsor their favorite .
They don't have to be big dog's, in fact the smaller the better they don't eat as much, but temperament would have to play a big part.
The one I look after is a Russell, for me Ideal, full of character and tough as old boots, plus if I have too I can stick him under my arm no problem..
But, he's also fiercely independent, and a nightmare on the lead..

'Rent A Dog', it sounds great but I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole.

I own a dog and through this ownership I know all the problems and upsets a dog can cause. That's why I wouldn't want to rent a dog from someone else.

There's no way you can guarantee the dogs you are aiming to rent out will behave themselves in the hands of complete strangers. If the dogs run-a-muck and damage any person's property or bite any person your company could end up with court summonses a mile long and fines exceeding thousands of pounds.

Think carefully about all the 'problems' and 'upsets' a dog can cause, before you go leaping into renting out dogs.

It is very hard to be passionate by someone else's idea. Remember this is something that will take over your life, you don't want to hate doing it.

Lord Sugar said about starting a business: "it should be in something you like doing and you have some knowledge". Sir Richard said pretty much the same thing.

The knowledge bit I agree you can learn about, like the founder of Yo Sushi is not a chef or even started any food business before. But still he already has corporate knowledge so know how to deal with suppliers etc.

Good luck with finding your own idea.
