riot187tns 05-02-2006, 04:12 Me and a couple of friends at work have decided to found the Sheffield & District chapter of the Pork Pie Appreciation Society. I would be interested in hearing from an other Pork Pie appreciators on this forum, and would be particularly grateful for any recommendations.
Greybeard 05-02-2006, 08:46 The pies from the little pork butcher's shop on the corner of Dykes Hall road and Middlewood road are good. He doesn't make a lot and is often sold out by early afternoon.
I think you have to go back to Melton Mowbury .All the pork pie's one can obtain here suppose to be M-M are just pure tack, the same can be said of their Black pudding.Mind you I do remember father-in-law making a pretty good one every xmas, just like yorkshire pudd ,its all in the love one puts in the mixture.
We have one here in Dinnington.

si@guisborough 05-02-2006, 11:19 Best pork pie from the supermarkets must be the Vale of Mowbray pies from Morrisons, but must be at room temperature! Up in Cleveland, the best pies are from a butcher in Eston, and he puts onions in some of them, which are nice once in a while.
40summat 05-02-2006, 11:26 Will this Sheffield and District chapter meet and take new members riot, or is it exclusive to you and your mates?
I'm sure you will have seen the Ripponden society site but i provide a link for those who have'nt, the section 'in search of the perfect pork pie' gives a good description of how to judge and evaluate the quality of this fine under appreciated product.
PS, would you suggest Daddies or HP or mustard (English only!) as an accompaniment.

officegirl 05-02-2006, 11:50 the best porkpies are from chatsworth farm shop accompanied with piccalilli yum yum
Yellowrose 05-02-2006, 13:33 Very nice ones from a little shop in Bakewell whose name I cant remember but it does lots of home baked goods. Its a very small shop and has a door on the back and the front. It also does pork pies topped with cranberry at Christmas which are nice.
Pork pies (not ones with cranberry) are best served with HP sauce. I dont like too much jelly either.
koenigsinger 05-02-2006, 13:51 Phillips's butchers on heeley bottom (london rd/chesterfield rd) make a fantastic pork pie. They also do some great roast beef and roast pork sandwiches.
Miss that a lot now I dont live at that end of town..
:(

True, once you have had their pies anything else (from a shop) is sub-standard. It's just a shame it so bloody far away.
You guys are making my mouth water, maybe time for another trip over.
Get some of those giant pork chops too while you're there.
cloudybay 05-02-2006, 15:16 Lilys on Penistone Road do great pies, but, then again, they do great everything.
Mmmmm....pork pies!
A Christmas Custom from when I was a child was that we'd all have Pork Pie for breakfast on Chrsitmas morning.
The Morrison's pie is a good supermarket pie - I've always found that the part of the pie that varies the most is the pastry. I LOVE pastry - just seems that sometimes the makers can't get it right.
Not sure whether it's heretical or not but I like my pies with a bit of tomato sauce. :)

Ye God's man, you should be horse whipped :o
For a good pie, try Robert Bowrings in Bolsover & Shirebrook, and while you are about it their pies and sausage rolls are also wonderful.
melthebell 05-02-2006, 15:29 my workmates been at the factory for 10 years and every break and dinnertime he has a pork pie without fail

Pork Pies are like sex Joe. There are good, bad and and indifferent. However, stick a little sauce on them, and the quality seems to pail into insignificance. I prefer fruity sauce myself.
Pork pies?.... Oooh! erm.... do we really want to cause another riot here? :D :D :D
waldershelf 05-02-2006, 15:54 John Crawshaws butchers In Stocksbridge and elsewhere, prize winning pies, superb.

Jackson's the bakers in Chesterfield are one of my finds of the year, so far as PP's go, they are full of chunky pieces of pork (non of that pinky luncheon meat stuff) they are truly a Pie amongst Pies.

Where abouts in Chesterfield are they? I used to quite enjoy Farrows until they were closed down by Magistrates after breaching 11 counts of the Hygiene Regs ...... :gag:

Jacksons are further along the Market Place from where Farrows were, walk as if you are heading towards Mc (spit) Donalds but keep going and Jacksons are near the Peak Book shop.
There was a cracking little bakers at Lundwood in Barnsley that did a lovely pork pie. Or are they called Growlers up there?

Albert Hurst (Hirst?) in Barnsley used to do the BEST pork pies ever! And if you could get them while they were still warm, they were to die for!
Now if I could just get him to open up in Ontario, Canada!!!!!
Bellacboy 13-02-2006, 20:03 The butchers in Crookes (the one opposite the punch bowl) does outstanding pies. I think its called Dickinsons
They reckon the best pork pies in Sheffield were from Fredriechs in the Wicker.
Don't know if this is the correct spelling. My grandmother always bought pies from them, some years ago now though.
[QUOTE=alysonpeach]. Its a very small shop and has a door on the back and the front.
Don't most shops have a back and front door, unless you have to crawl in through windows :hihi:
pete_jim 15-02-2006, 13:15 Kempka the Polish butchers on Abbeydale Road (opposite the old Cinema) does fab Pork Pies, usually still hot on a Tuesday morning the gravy/jelly dribbles down your chin. Also makes his own sausages, including garlic, and a ham sausage which he makes about once a fortnight, you eat it cold it's delicious. Also his prices are very reasonable. The shop is reallly old but clean and he even uses a handraulic slicing machine.

Yes, I've been to that one too. Isn't it on a main road or something like that ? Opposite some outdoor shops, and next to a grocery.
That's the first ever 'fresh' pork pie I ever had. Out of this world. :)
Definitely beats the supermaket stuff, the crusts were so crisy ! MMm... yum.
FunkyHouse 15-02-2006, 15:17 Pork Pies get my vote!! With Brown sauce though...;-P
cainedkaty 18-02-2009, 20:23 John Crawshaws butchers In Stocksbridge and elsewhere, prize winning pies, superb.
I think the porkpies sold there are actually made in Ecclesfield by someone else.
