Cant remember any more at mo They were the best years of our luives and we hated them I saw Betty Codona the other week and she still remembered me god what a shock shes got a memory like an elephant only jokingBye See ya soon.x
Frankie Rage 23-03-2008, 15:01 I was at Firth Park Grammar from 1966 to 1972. The teacher 'Pod' Harrison was there then as was the history teacher 'Spike' and geography teacher Mr Copley (very young and quiet then..) The other history teacher 'Adolf' Smith was there too and 'Duke' the Deputy Head also Roger Blades the sports master. The Head Master was Mr Wilson who still caned pupils (bring it back for Gods sake..) I remember the spiral main staircase being spooky when it was quiet and also the spooky top floor classrooms. A lot of echoes up there when no one was supposed to be about..
I also remember Jack's Ice Cream van at lunchtimes parked outside the back gates and his outrageously large cones covered in melted chocolate! There was 'Sam' Jones the French Teacher and Mr Brunt too. Also the English Teacher 'Sam' or 'Silas' Cook. Mr Parry the music teacher and Mr Bee the art master. I wasn't sorry to leave to be honest, I couldn't hack it really :-)
Boys in my class/year: John Oldfield, Steve Poulton, Andy Caban, Eric Burley, Andrew Gilling, Michael Gill, Michael Beecroft, Gary Wainwright, Kevin Steads, Mark Leeming, loads more faces I recall but alas not names. Lost touch with all of them!!
I was there from about 1970 to about 1976. I remember 'Pod' Harrison particularly well. He was pleasant enough most of the time, but nasty enough when riled. I thought most of the teachers were spectacularly ghastly. When I joined the school it was changing over from a Grammar school and becoming Comprehensive, so Firth Park was getting girls for the first time and pupils who were, let us say, not quite as sparkling as the teachers were used to dealing with.
Much of the time my classes were divided between Firth Park Brushes and Hatfield House Senior school, and so my recollections of who was where might have become dimmed with age. However, I remember Mr Renshaw, the physics teacher. In school assembly he used to sing the descant parts of the hymns. When I first heard him do this I thought he was having a stroke.
Chemistry, if I remember rightly, was a guy called Mr Upton, and then someone called Mr Prince joined the staff later. I remember the brilliant stinks from the labs. Both seemed pretty good teachers. I got my Chemistry O'level so neither of them was particularly useless.
Art was Mr Bee. And Mr Tingle. (I think that's right.) Oh, and Mr Shreeve. Again, I might be confusing some of these with teachers at Hatfield House Lane Senior.
But for certain there were a couple of unpleasant teachers, name of Alan 'Adolf' Smith (history) and a Mr Bonnet. They were always on the prowl in the corridors looking for pupils to punish.
I best not say anymore of what I thought of these two.
More later.

Nope. I can't think of anyone called Mark or Norman in the year I was in. There was a guy in my year called Roger Hall who was a genius on the piano. If you remember him then that'll give us a yardstick.
Did anyone out there play basketball at the school?

yodelmiester 22-04-2008, 22:59 Mark Morley (best mate and really clever lad)
Mark Butler
Simon Atwell
Russell Parker (went in Army)
Shane Shelley
Paul Arliss
Paul Ellis
Ashley Ward
Trevor Whattam
Andrew Wood
John Arthur Langley
Remember all these.
Mark, Trevor and mesen were always trying to be top in the school at the time. I remember Marks infamous story in English when he decided to write a sex scene and , due to his brilliance, got away with it. Remember he always used staedler pens, the blue ones. Always thought he would get into Oxford or Cambridge but never found out...anyone know?
Simon Atwell was the ska freak, loved madness and the specials, but especially madness.
Didn't know Russ had gone into the army...
Remember it was always between Arliss and Ellis as to who was the cock of the year, remember Paul Ellis battering someone when we were watching an end of year film. I was lucky, I knew Paul Ellis from being young. Stephen Grace was another one I remember, also Dave Barker.
I used to know Shane fairly well, didn't he have an acorn electron?????
David Bell was around at that time, also Busby....
I used to live on Perkyn Terrace...

I have to say it was I who wrote the sex scene....seriously. Think it was Miss North, the English teacher. She had high hopes for me in the subject. Spot on about everything else mate. Remember it all well.
Heard on this site that Mark and his brother John emigrated to Canada. Dint Simon have big feet? His trainers were about 4 foot long!
And the Glave twins you mentioned? Michelle and Mandy was it? They were the only 2 to beat me in a mock RE exam. Was amazed I did so well. Suppose I could have become a vicar....NOT

Saw Russell quite a few years back in a cafe in town. Was still a soldier at that time.

yodelmiester 25-04-2008, 10:38 I remember Miss North...also remember Miss Walker who I really really hated...I think the feeling was mutual.
I remember the Glave twins came back after the 6 week holidays really slim, which was a surprise. Did anyone else on here go on the trip to Russia??
I'd like to know what happened to Mark Morley.
living away from Sheffield and only getting back to the Lane means I have no idea who or what happened to people.

Didn't go on the trip to Russia myself but fairly sure Mark did as it was one of his chosen subjects. Was it our form tutor Miss.Green who took them?
As I said before mate, was informed Mark emigrated. The beauty of the net is someday he may read this and get in touch.
yodelmiester 25-04-2008, 13:06 It was Miss Green who took us...I only did Russian so i could go to Russia on the trip, as evidenced by my CSE grade 4.
There must be a few more of us out there...c'mon, get in touch

Me and the wife were in this too. I was in the choir. I don`t know what role she was in
I suppose someone`s mentioned it before, but what about the school cottage in grassington. Had a right laugh. Can remember going to the swimming baths and digging the hole to empty the chemical toilet in
yodelmiester 25-04-2008, 18:01 I can...trying to hold it in until you could get to the toilets in the village.
Eating crap undercooked food and wondering why you all needed the toilet at the same time....running as fast as you dare down the hill...
What about the teachers leaving at night to go down to the pub. I remember some of the girls in my class had never seen cows for real before , they were really scared.
I have bad memories of my time at camp.

i was there - i left in, i think, 1973. started at the "other" school in 68 because i failed the 11+ but when the school went comprehensive, i was offered the opportunity to swap because i lived closeby, actually - i lived in the houses across the road on barnsley road.
used to opt for athlectics in the cold weather instead of PE in the gym, then me and a few mates would get the keys to the pavillion, then nip over to my house instead - never got caught.
Just to let you all know i've started a facebook group called "The Brushes" This for anyone who had the pleasure of attending The Brushers or Firth Park Grammar School and Firth Park School "Each for All, All for Each" A place to meet up with former friends.

Mr Lockwood the metalwork teacher is not there, I left in 76 and remember him, he died though 3 years ago, I know his son Stephen
Sonia - whats your surname?
I was friends with her sister but i think i remember you.
Jon. I went there for one year-1950.What happened to 'The Brushes'?
I went to Firth Park Grammar School from 1946 to 1962.
It was a great school, both academically and sportwise.
The highlight of the sporting calendar was the annual Staff versus pupils football match.
Some of the staff were excelent footballers, particularly Mr Parry, who I understand, represented Wales in his youth.
Some of the pupils were sons and/or relatives of some famous footballers, such as Barry Blenkinsop.
We had a wonderful 1st X1 Football team going for 4 years only losing the odd match.
Anyone recall these wonderful times ?
Spike, now that name brings back memories, He was the nicest teacher ever, everyone from that era must remember spike. I remember the very first time he taught me, he caught me talking in class, picked up a slipper and took me into the next room, he then started to hit the table with it, of course all the other kids in the classroom thought he'd given me a good slippering. Everyone who was taught by spike knows he was totally incapable of any form of punishment. A dear old man who sadly is no longer with us. I left firth park in 1974, and regretably left Sheffield in 1996.
I remember Spike with great affection.
I was at Firth Park from 1946 to 1952 and, at that time it was a boys only Grammar School.
Other teachers I remember were Walter Padfield, a very strict Headmaster, who retired whilst I was there and was replaced by W.R.C. ( Arsie) Chapman, who was a puusy cat compared to Paddy.
Mr Parry was the Music Teacher and played fullback for the Masters against Pupils end of term Football Match.
Lawrence Haywood taught Russian and he too was an uncompromising Centre Half for the Staff.
Freddy Gagan was the most feared Master in the School.
We had to walk from class to class in single file and no talking.
Freddy would look down the stairs from half way up the Tower and if anyone stepped out of line or chatted between classes he uttered the feared " boy my classroom NOW"
Mr Dutton was Latin Teacher and Jock McKay the PT Teacher.
Mr Tring was the Groundsman and Football Coach and he was very good too.
Mr F.T.Wood ( Hefty ) taught English at the same time. and Dr Over taught languages.
He had a false hand and many a boy felt a clip from that.
Discipline was strict, but fair, and I havn't found it did me any harm
It taught me respect and loyalty.
Anyone else remember these times ?
fleetwood 03-06-2008, 20:45 I did'nt attend the school, but when I took the dreaded 11'plus exam (twice I might add) and failed, Firth Park Grammer would have been a choice of mine had I been successful. But I've got to say in my day, everybody new that school as the 'Redcaps', it was 'I've passed for the Redcaps' or 'I'm going to the Redcaps school'. I knew the area very well and I always thought what a nice location for a school, as opposed to many instituitions in and around Sheffield.
Roger1........
Ten years after you left I was there from 1962 to 1967. Still the Redcaps Grammar School.
H.J.S. Wilson was the Headmaster. Someone to fear!
Spike ,of course was still there. His ghost stories, I will never forget.
Lawrence Haywod and Mr Parry I remember too, also "Hefty". He was Dr. F.T. Wood then. (Known as "Driftwood")
Jock McKay's home town was Farfar in Scotland, and he talked about it fondly.
On the one occasion I got into a real fight with another pupil in the school yard, he was the one that stopped it.
The following day, we were to be in the school gym at lunchtime, where we could (in his words) settle our differences.
Shorts and Boxing Gloves...with him as the referee.
Oh..and as many spectators as possible in the gallery above the gym.
(I nearly pulled a sicky that day)
We knocked three bells out of each other....shook hands..showered, and
became friends.
Discipline was still strict...and fair.
It was Miss Green who took us...I only did Russian so i could go to Russia on the trip, as evidenced by my CSE grade 4.
There must be a few more of us out there...c'mon, get in touch
You lucky buggers all went on the trip, If I remember correctly, didn't you visit a tractor factory or something? couldn't afford to go and It still upsets me, probably a good job I didn't, my Russian wasn't very good, but Il oved it ,remember we all had names...I was Irina......Hello Mandy and Michelle. I used to get on really well with Mark Morley I'd love to know what he's up to now.Dosvidania!!

howden25 19-06-2008, 09:54 Went there from 45 to 50 and enjoyed the experience, unfortunately most names now escape me bar Mr's. Gagan and Haywood.
Mr Gagan apparently knew my family so got more attention " chalk and board cleaner as well as his hand" didn't do any good though, still failed.

howden25 20-06-2008, 10:07 Hi Roger,
Finished in 5H, History teacher Miss ?, remember classmates "Nobby" Newsome, Clive Pick, John Grey, one called Wrigglesworth and maybe a Brian Smith.
Geograph teacher ? had a cane called quebracho (met it a lot), Chemistry teacher a portly gentleman, said a went to sleep during lessons( he was right), was the French teacher the one with the false hand? Headmaster at that time ? met him a few times in his office.
Some years ago a saw on "friendsreunited" a Old Boys Reunion, when did that start? too late now anyway.
After leaving most names I just forgot.
Barry Smith
Calling all Firth Park School pupils i have found this forum http://firthparkschool.proboards.com/for all the people who went to the school :)
Norah the Maid
Location: Sheffield - Firth Park Brushes (former school), Barnsley Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The maid, who committed suicide on the site two hundred years ago, is still said to wander the area. When the high school stood on the area, cleaning staff reported lights that would turn themselves on, amongst other strange phenomena. A priest was called to exorcise the land in 2003; it is too early to say whether he was successful.
mally350z 07-11-2008, 00:57 Does anyone remember the crazy, eccentric, strict (but very clever) music teacher at Firth Park, surely you do. If anyone dared to yawn in class you had to hope and prey he did not catch you or you'd be oiked out to pay a pittance of singing an octave in front of the class or a blackboard rubber thrown your way or the fact you could almost have peed yourself with his loud booming voice directed at you. The days of schooling!
Mr Jackson ?
Got to be. He hated me as i was crap at music. Thought he was having a coronary sometimes
Mr Jackson ?
Would still say the best shot with a blackboard rubber was Mr Pilley. You could see his face getting red and then at boiling point, picked up the rubber and with great accuracy hit the intended target
Its great to see so many people talking about & sharing their stories from school. I'm sure most of you, including myself, enjoyed the time we spent there. Oh By the way, I was there in the 70's & left in 1975. I havent recognised any of the pupils names as yet but the teachers, boy do they bring back memories.....lets see, there was Mr Sanderson(Headteacher), Mr (Wally) Webster(Deputy),Miss Maggie Meeham(Deputy),Mr Doug Jennings(Maths),Mr John Jackson(Music),Mr Peter Adams(Art),Mr Alan Renshaw(Physics),Mr Pilley & Mr Goeff Copley(both Geography), Mr Alan(Adolph) Smith,Mr (Boris)Haywood(Russian),Miss Howdle(French),Mr Pete Stain & Mr Roger Sherwood(Boys P.E. & Games),Miss Betty Cordoba(Nee Ellis)(Girls P.E. & Games),Mr Upton & Mr Ian Critchley(both Chemistry),Mr Tom Lockwood(Metalwork & Tech Drawing),Mr Robert Foster(woodwork),Mr (Chiselchin) Sedlemier(Metalwork),Mr Dave Bonnet(Maths) & last but not least....Mr Spike Johnson(History). To give you a clue as to whom I spent my school years with, here are some of the pupils that were there at the same time as me...
BOYS: Paul (tomo)Thompson, Andrew(Wombat)Wilson, Kevin Kimpton, Paul Stobbs, Andrew Croxton, Dougie Bullock, Phil Milburn, Keith Graham, Neil (scooby)Davis, Phil Davis, Paul Swift, Neil Clarke, Philip Thew, Philip (Dalos) Dale, Andrew Drinkwater, Kim Wood, Steven (swimmer)Allen, Stephen kirk, Lloyd Siddall, Tim Needham, Steven Braithwaite, Brian Abdulah, Sean Coulson, Michael Tetley, Goeff Hazelhurst.
GIRLS: Jean Short, Karen Hickman, Sharon Fox, Diane Cottam, Julie Clarke, Jackie Broadbent, Mavis Cutts, Shelly Harrison, Beverly Kidd, Karen Platts, Jane Shemeld.
I've now got a headache trying to remeber all those people, but it was worth it just to take a stroll down 'Memory Lane'. (A bit of a cliche, but what the hell!!!).
I suppose by now you are all wondering who the heck I might be, .......I'll keep you guessing a little longer........watch this space........
mally350z 26-03-2009, 15:24 no dont think so but i can allways recall him saying young man wen he seen u mesing about i was ther mr liverland was a art teacher n some lads in y class wer malcom wilson . allen staniland . mike warren .shid absal . dean o brian .
i remeber these names , also recall dougie !
I was there from 69 transferred from Hartley Brook. I remember John Simmons, Ian Johnson, Steven Twigg, David Lilly, Richard Lambert, Terry Critchlow, Susan Lyons,
Anthony Cardona, Mick Cohen, Mick Nicholson,Lynne Beverley, Carol Whitam, Brian Smith,
Johnny Rowberry, Sue Melia and Brian Birch.
hiya,
i'm one of those names on tara'a list. all the other names are familiar, some i remember as 'mates' out of school too. putting faces to names is getting more difficult though, praps would be good to see some photos. i came from hatfield house lane when the two schools merged, because i lived about 100 yards away - barnsley road - houses behind the hedges. i remember, especially in bad weather, choosing to do games outside instead of p.e. in the gym - then me and a few others would get the keys to the pavillions in the park - remember those ? - but we'd go to my house instead just down the road. never got caught - just cant remember who i went with.
hey tara - i'm dead curious to know who you are - you can obviously remember me, would you mind if i messaged you ?
Dogtvmad 28-03-2009, 10:20 i think i left firth park in 2003 i think !! cnt really remember lol. i remeber mr piper , had him in science , he was ok until class was naughty and he would get his big metal bar out and wack it on the metal filing cabinet !!! the sound used to ring in everyones ears !!

Not at all feel free, ive narrowed you down to one of three people.
Were you in Mrs Carr's form.
Hi I was there at the same time as you but I think a year below you.
My name is Roger Nowill, what is yours, we may well remember each other
Hello Roger, Are you the Roger Nowill who ran the 277th scouts at Sutton Hall? during the late 1950s
VERY SAD NEWS: ex Firth Park and Brushes pupil, Paul Simmons sadly passed away this week. My thoughts go out to his Family and friends during this difficult time.
GraceLeah 15-09-2009, 23:28 i went to that school in the early to mid eighties, and so did my brother Dave.
what was thet french teachers name, and that female head we had for a while she was scarey!:)
I think you're refering to "Sam" Mr Jones (french teacher) and was the deputy head mistress Mrs Meehan (not sure how her surname was spelled) but she was famous for wearing orange lipstick which didn't suit her and Mr Dougie Jennings with his pronunciation of vey--ickles always caused a few titters when he said it, was the other deputy head at that time. I left in 1975, loved every minute of my time there, cried when I left, but these 3 teachers were still going strong then. I am 50 and back there doing computer courses. My son, who is now 31 also went there. I will also read through the rest of the questions and see if I can help answer any other questions.
GraceLeah 15-09-2009, 23:38 I LEFT FIRTH PARK SCHOOL IN 1976, remember mr piley , mr jackson and mr brunt what was the old physics teacher called in the tower at the brushes the one with the funny foot
The teacher you're refering to was Mr Harrison, universally known as "Pod" and he was a total sweetie. So the story goes that he had his toes on one foot blown off in the war and after that had to have special shoes made with weights to help him balance. After suffering 2 years of blinding science from Mr Renshaw he gave me one to one tuition, took me through, and helped me to pass my O level physics. Also do you remember the old record player he had in his classroom on the middle corridor at Brushes where he would play us one of his favourite records Lucy in the sky with diamonds by the Beatles.
GraceLeah 16-09-2009, 00:00 Just a thought, I left in 1974, anyone remember going to firth park at lunchtime and popping into malinkis cafe (Marti canes cafe). we also used to go to the bakers, buy an uncut loaf, dig out the bread from the middle, then have the loaf filled up with chips at the chippy. Ah, happy memories.
I left in 1975 and (I and several others) used to cross the playing field to get (at lunchtime) 5 Parkdrive ciggies and half an uncut loaf from the little shop on Hadfield House Lane, eat and hollow it out whilst going to Lidsters chipshop, across the other side of the junction on Bellhouse Road to have it filled with chips and scraps - a feast from heaven!
GraceLeah 16-09-2009, 00:30 i was at school in the 70s, started in 1972 and left in 76. i was wondering i might know you. we had classes at north building as well as brushes.
I was also there in the first part of the 70s. I left in 1975 at the end of the 5th year. Just maybe, we all might know each other
GraceLeah 16-09-2009, 01:47 Its great to see so many people talking about & sharing their stories from school.
Well, come on then, who are you? The names you have mentioned some of them were in the same class as me, ie: Paul Stubbs, Phil Milburn, Steven Allen - Swimmer - he was the one who gave Caroline Lee her nickname of Pee-Wee, Stephen Kirk, Geoff Hazelhurst, Karen Platts and Jane Shemeld. I do bump into Dougie Bullock now and again as he lives on the same estate as me, had a short romance with him for a few months in the mid-eighties and I was friends with his sister Anne. Paul Thompson, Andrew Wilson, Kim Wood, Jean Short, Beverly Kidd and Mavis Cutts all went through Beck Road Middle School with me. I was friends with Mavis out of school too for a year or so. I also remember Lloyd Siddall, Paul Swift and Denise Harrison as the swimmers. I remember Denise because I was the only one that could beat her (that should give you a big clue as to who I am) and my best school-mate was Vernell Goddard, who also was in the same class.
There was also Mr Dentith (maths), Mr Chapman also maths, he always had bad breath, Ma Carr who's aim with a blackboard rubber was second to none. It also wasn't Betty Cordoba, it was Betty Cadona, she married her husband Alistair Cadona while we were there, Mr Upton moved to teach Chemistry at Silverdale School (after we left) and Mr Copley used to give you an involuntary shower when he spoke if you sat in the first two rows and last but not least, Doc Mayhew (Geology), my favourite teacher, who left at the same time as me to go and teach down in Devon/Cornwall. I did get to see some of the old teachers years later as my son, who is now 31 and made me a Nanna of 3 (2 girls and a boy and loving every minute of it!) went to Firth Park too and surpisingly the ones that I saw did remember me mainly through the swimming.
Funnily enough, I go there now to the North Building once a week on Tuesday evenings for Computer studies, and boy, has the place changed. Gone is the flagpole, the huts gone too, new wings being built here there and everywhere, even the Bungalow has gone. Shame. I had such fond memories of my time there.
Oh yeah, I'm still watching this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are looking for old friends from Firth Park school and you are on facebook this group might get you intouch with old friends. http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.splat.slater#/group.php?gid=41300300569

Reply to Wendy of Wincobank.
I went to Firth Park school from 1971-1978 and was probably in the same room as you when we had that ghost story from Spike Johnson...the old history teacher.
Not sure how old I was, maybe 15 or 16, but the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up and, YES, the room WAS cold and it was in summer as you say.
We were lucky as the teachers were Grammar school quality teachers...Spike,Sam Jones, Benskin for Geog, Pilling, Hoggy for English.
I was not too fussed or surprised when the "authorities" allowed a fire to happen at the old, long closed, school building back then....now a thriving college I believe.
Hi,
Anyone Leave Firth Park School Summer 1978?
Belated reply to Shetlander. 2004.
Yes I did.
Who are you? Who were you.
More later.
Whoever whitham is I must have known you.
I was at Brushes and Hatfield from 1971 to 1978...thanks for reminding me of Upton and Tingle, also Adolf Smith who was a History teacher.
I had remembered Sam Jones, Pilley or Pilling for geog, Nigel Lockwood for metalwork, Spike of course...and remember Lenny Benskin, Hoggard and Jenny Ullman from 6th Form, Ullman was scrummy!!
Good days?
Would still say the best shot with a blackboard rubber was Mr Pilley. You could see his face getting red and then at boiling point, picked up the rubber and with great accuracy hit the intended target
I remember this daftlad. Pilley was a danger and took no crap from you, but I dont think he was nasty or hostile.
Me and Leachy used to wind him up...in class. we were daft lads then...in the mid 1970s.
I have just remembered that huge guy. Mr.Jennings who taught history to the younger groups. He seriously resembled Desperate Dan....and spoke about nine languages too.
I was amazed. I came within a whisker of beating him at chess in the afternoon chess clubs...and I was only flippin 15 or 16!
Happy times?

Did we learn nothing at school?

As you might gather, Dropout, has just encountered this Firth Park School thread after 5 years. I have not been a big I.T/Computer man.

Be good to catch up with some old mates, old faces again....maybe.
cliffsharky 22-12-2009, 18:55 We were one of if not the first class to go down to brushes. its around 70 we were in last year 5th and the north thought we may be the best to send down before we over took them,Because that's what happened.when we were introduced, we were looked at as a bit of a novelty. Specially as we had girls in our class .The girls could not believe their luck.
A lot of the younger boys were wearing red caps don`t know if this was a must or there parents just wanted people to know what school there kids went too. we settled in, some good teachers down there but we were appreciating ours at the north to as we got older.
Anyway as boys do, A footie match was arranged between the older lads of the north and the red cap boys. Think mr staine ref it but we had played in his school team for about 4yrs . Needless to say we won cannot remember score .

I think they were properly, well trained teachers in those days, Cliff.
Not sure it is anything like the same nowadays....
We were fortunate to have good teachers and fairly good conditions....even though,as many have said, we hated going to school and took the hiss out of teachers and each other....but, at least, some have benefitted from their "free" educations.
I left in 78 but wasn`t in F1/2. I was in H2. You mention a lad called Goddard. Wasn`t he the one who was really good on the violin along with his sister. I`m sure i can remember them playing at morning assembly. Then again it could have been when i was at beck road as they both went there as well.

Yeah, Tony Goddard, child prodigy apparently. A very intelligent bloke.
Cant remember his sister though.
Spudgun? Dont remember that nickname either...but I expect Andy Crowther would probably have known you. ...or maybe Sean Slinn...another name I forgot to mention earlier from Hatfield House Firth Park in the 1970s....and good friends since.

Pity, in a way, that you lose touch with most of them.....but I am still mates, even now, with a very few of them.
So..how often are these Firth Park school reunion thingies then?
Is it just for the 5os lot, 60s, 70s, etc....or does everyone join in together?...only I dont suppose there would be much sense in meeting up people you didnt know in the first place, huh?
What about the 1971-1978 brigade.
I have listed a LOT of your names on thread page 17 and 18....is there ANYONE from that time still around in Sheffield....or on this forum otherwise?
Happy solstice, yuletide, new year, old year, etc and so,on.

Spike Johnson died in 2001.
There's a newspaper cutting about him posted on the Firth Park Grammar School website here. (http://www.firthparkgrammarschool.co.uk/spike01.htm)
I was at the school from 1962 to 1967.

Yeah Spike was a good old teacher wasn't he? Popular with most pupils from around 1950 to 1979 or longer I think.
I was at Firth Park from 1971 to 1978 at Hatfield House Lane and Brushes.
Wonder if there are any Brushes 1970s lot out there still?
I have discovered there IS a website about Firth Park School...but it is the Grammar School and only covers up to the late 1960s really ...but I posted a message on its noticeboard to try to start up a link for Firth Park Schools pupils and teachers from the 1970s.

Sooooooo...Are there any Firth Park Brushes and Hatfield peeps from 1971 - 78 still around in Sunny Sheff?, or have most of them emigrated to somewhere even sunnier.?

Yeah, Spudgun, I remember a few of those names...and lots more that I have posted up here before.
Wonder still, if most of them have left Sunny Sheff? Or maybe they just have better things to do than read or write posts and threads on Sheffield Forum?
To dropout..and others interested.
It's a real shame that Steve (owner of the Firth Park Grammar School website) hasn't exploited the potential of his website.
There must be many ex pupils that would visit an active forum to contact old friends. I understand he tried the idea and then dismissed it.
Maybe his move to France, and business commitments got in the way.

So. So far nobody has come forward with any famous or well known Firth Park School pupils from the 1970s classes. How about some of the teachers?
We know about John Sherwood...Olympic medal winner...but are any of the others now famous or well known?

Was Richard Hawley in the late 70's? I was in the same year as his youngest sister and there was a sister in between so he might have just made it in to the 70's, he's quite famous.

David Hawley rings a bell .....Mmmmmmmmm
gluedtopc 26-01-2010, 16:11 My PE teacher, Mr Plumbley polayed football for Doncaster, this would have been around 1965, but I don't suppose that makes him famous. Also remember John Sherwood taking us across to the playing fields for football. I was there from 1965-1970, remember Spike Johnson, history, FT Wood, English, I think (he was still wearing a black gown), Mr Machin, physics, Chas. Holmes, Chemistry, Mr Baines, Latin, Nebby Parker, French, Mr. Mayhew., Geography, Mrs. Garde, English literature, Boris Haywood, Russian, Dr. Eaker, French. "Crispy". Smith, Maths, Mr Dowling, metalwork, Mr. Parry, music. The head was H.J.S. Wilson, I think, and the deputy head was "Duke weatherall.
Some names I remember there from 1962 -1967.
H.J.S Wilson was the head.
The Duke (weatherall) deputy.
Spike...well everyone from the school remembers spike fondly. Top Man!
FT Wood....correct title Dr. F.T.Wood. I remember someone adding an "i" to the name plate on his door so it read "Driftwood". He was a well respected scholar of his time, and legend has it that he once received a letter through the post addressed to "Dr.F.T.Wood, England".
I remember Doc Eaker well.....it wasn't often his blackboard rubber missed it target!
You didn't mention Mr Harrison..general science. The one and only person that showed interest if you didn't understand something. He would give you extra time willingly to get his message across.
pehorts1 27-01-2010, 15:34 i'm fairly new to this site and ive been reading a load of the archives about the stocksbridge bypass.
Im very interested about the exitance of ghosts and in particular the Firth Park old building Brushes (because it is very near to me).
I read in the Star when they first started pulling the old building down that the builders refused to proceed until they had a exorcism ( you have to excuse the spelling there).
I felt that that was wrong!!! if it was haunted, then it was haunted for a reason, and if the exorcism didnt work it will be interesting to see whether the ghost (Norma i think she was called) will still be ocuping the new building!!
I just wondered what everyone elses view are!!!
I left in 78 the qhost was reputed to have been a servant who had been murdered. however I often wondered if the ghost had been made up to stop us from trying to get into the tower, which had been deemed as unsafe due to lack repairs to the stairs.
There was a more plausible ghost story that seems to be substantiated by peoples recollections from before the building was used as a school about the ghost of john booth (one of the first owners of the building) riding through the oval estate on his favourite horse. This is further substantiated by the fact that john booth was buried in his mausoleum with his favourite horse. The mausoleum stood in woodland where the oval estate now stands.

Studied Russian French and English Lit at A Level....only found out years later that Boris lived just round the corner from me in Dore....this was when he died!!(When I found out we lived near each other I mean!!) Great guy Boris...top man!!
jjbarnesfan 01-02-2010, 13:13 I've a vague recollection of a Tony Morgan.
Rough arsed youth from Wybourn . Rubbish dancer.
Somehow managed to marry his lovely child bride.
Last seen hurtling down Ecclesall Road on his scooter at nearly 10 miles an hour.
tony morgan 01-02-2010, 13:20 Name and Shame yourself!!:D:D

He is yes...don't know when he was there.
When I was there one of the other sports teachers at Brushes was Betty Codona...she used to drive us up to Stocksbridge sports centre on a Weds afternoon in the minibus...for swimming, squash etc.
She became famous as the long - time coach of Sheffield Hatters.(netball)..who won every single trophy and league for about 10 consecutive years I think!!

Richard Hawley was there when I was in the early 80's. There used to be him , Paul Infanti, Lorraine Camm , Gill Graham and rob someone or other ! who all used to be in the plays . I was in Romeo and Juliet with them directed by Paul
Desgranges.
Good to see Richard doing so well for himself. I used to be mates with his sister Becky
sparkyfred 21-02-2010, 12:31 I left in '70. I remember Mr Copley the geography teacher. He used to waggle his little finger for emphasis when he talked.
I remember him. He could not control a class at all so we used to wind him up to snapping point. In one lesson he really lost it. He started dishing out detentions to the entire class and escalating it every time we continued to ignore his threats. We called his bluff and carried on - it got to about 20 detentions and he backed down.
sparkyfred 21-02-2010, 12:45 Just a thought, I left in 1974, anyone remember going to firth park at lunchtime and popping into malinkis cafe (Marti canes cafe). we also used to go to the bakers, buy an uncut loaf, dig out the bread from the middle, then have the loaf filled up with chips at the chippy. Ah, happy memories.
We used to do that, "cob and chips" we called it. We used to take it to the Paragon chippy on Sicey opposite Fine Fare. They used to fill em really full, way more than a normal portion for the same price, so we'd stop eating the bread from the middle first, just used to screw it into a ball and throw it at each other!
firshill 21-02-2010, 17:48 Anyone else remember the cottage at Grassington that you used to go to when you reached the sixth form. Brilliant place! It was quite delapidated but I used to love it ! We went there a couple of times ...happy days !:)
I remember John Jackson..mental but used to put on brilliant shows . I was in Fiddler on The Roof and a couple of other shows .
I remember the head teacher( Dr Martly?)making us all stand up when he strode down the aisle before assembly ,even though he was about 3 inches tall:cool: and the films they used to show in the hall at Christmas time .
Firth Park , on reflection, was a bit of a rubbish school ...but I did OK!:hihi:
John Sherwood was my form tutor for a year and I remember when he was on Superstars...We thought he was a big hero because of that!

I remember it, great place, nearer to Hebden than Grassington I think. We live more up that way now and think we went past it a few years back on a walk we followed out of a book "Pub walks in the Yorkshire Dales" by Clive Price. It was the walk that started at The Clarendon in Hebden. I'd be interested to know if anyone can confirm its exact location.

Excellent, thanks Allen. Just googled the cottage house name and found it on some property sites (seems to be up for sale if you've got £284k to spare) including map location. Don't think it can be the same one we walked past.
Just Googled it myself....all I came up with was that it is now a "Holiday Let Cottage".
Not that I have a spare £284K....but would be interested to read the sales literature.
It's certainly been improved from the dump I spent a weekend in.
You didn`t have to be in the sixth form to go. I went with all my class and i definately didn`t stay on. Had a good laugh. Even emptying the chemical toilet into the hole you`ve just dug felt like an adventure
barton123 24-02-2010, 20:40 Most people will ahve seen recent news coverage that John Sherwood is retiring from his teaching post at Firth park school after 95 years or was it 32 years this september.
Previous posts on this thread asked about the remotely mad science teacher who taught physics in the tower classrtooms, he was Mr "pod" Harrison.
Mr Renshaw was also physics during my time at firth park 1974-1979 he taught at north buiding and took no crap from no body. a form tutor of mine for one year, you didnt cross him twice.
Other names that crop up inconversation, Mr adams, Mr Litheland art, Miss allcock science, Mrs Walker english mrs richardson english, mr Peet maths Mr longley european studies, mr (now Dr) Tyldsley History mr Jones french mr walker metal work mr sedelmier woodwork ? head was Dr Hartley, duputy was mr Jennings Mr Pilley geography, Mr Jackson Music, Mrs higginbottom, english/drama others slip in and out of ones mind from time to time,
My daughter is now at the school and asks me who taught us for IT. ??? Or Pshe, or dance ? I tell her about the only computers they had then were for premium bonds we never saw one.
Best memory though has to be the book exchange on the top corridor at north building and Mr Pilleys Tuck shop at the end of the middle corridor, Milk CHews lasted all morning, Dundee biscuits that were as big as a bin lids, refresher chew bars, and all them flaming woden lockers.
hi i can remember all them teahers well wen i went i can
