View Full Version : Why do people say 'lol'... spyro2000 04-02-2006, 15:37 ...when things are not even funny? I sometimes try to imagine someone actually laughing when they have sid 'lol'. BrainThrust 04-02-2006, 15:39 Some people smile all the time, isn't it pretty much the same thing? Wilf matsalleh 04-02-2006, 15:40 ...when things are not even funny? I sometimes try to imagine someone actually laughing when they have sid 'lol'. Is this a typo, probably not? I agree it is the thing I hate most. TheBlueDragon 04-02-2006, 15:41 I hate it when people say lol. its a total conversation killer ________ Volcano Vaporiser Review (http://vaporizer.org) spyro2000 04-02-2006, 15:41 Is this a typo, probably not? lol  Robbie Loving 04-02-2006, 16:04 ask mz_babe, she is a MASSIVE culprit of doing this Halibut 04-02-2006, 16:05 I can't stand it either. It's almost as annoying as when people write "prolly" when they mean "probably"...... Although i suspect some people on here really do think there's a word called "prolly". Probably. Hecate 04-02-2006, 16:32 I use LOL occasionally, to suggest that I've found something that someone has written amusing. I prefer it to the smiley () which does the same thing. Humour often doesn't travel well over the net, hence the use of the smilies or, if you prefer them, the tried and trusted acronyms. I've never come across 'prolly' being used instead of 'probably', but I agree; I would find it annoying. spyro2000 04-02-2006, 16:43 Peter41 puts the word prolly (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=894820#post894820) to good use here :) tslogf74 04-02-2006, 16:53 I think there is a tendancy to exaggerate with these things. I usually say lol when I'm actually smiling and rofl when I'm laughing out loud. If I were actually rofling it would be hard to type, and if I ever lmao I'll have other things to worry about. Hecate 04-02-2006, 17:00 I think there is a tendancy to exaggerate with these things. I usually say lol when I'm actually smiling and rofl when I'm laughing out loud. If I were actually rofling it would be hard to type, and if I ever lmao I'll have other things to worry about. I must admit the only acronym I use is LOL. I use it when something has made me smile or laugh. ROFL = Rolling on the floor laughing? I don't think anyone on here's quite that funny, unless we have a Bill Hicks clone or similar ::looks around:: Nope, no Bill Hicks clones around here. I use the smilies sometimes if something I've written is not meant to be taken too seriously. MTheo 04-02-2006, 17:06 ohh does it mean laugh out loud? i thought it was just kids slang so i keep saying it to look cool ;) Hecate 04-02-2006, 17:10 ohh does it mean laugh out loud? i thought it was just kids slang so i keep saying it to look cool ;) I think LOL and other internet acronyms have been around for about as long as the internet. MTheo 04-02-2006, 17:14 i type it... but not every sentance like some people... i mix it up with some haha's or hehe's or general :hihi: 's what a very dull subject! can you tell im killing time Beakerzoid 04-02-2006, 17:16 I don't mind it too much (but the 'prolly' thing winds me up - seen it on quite a few posts and just stop reading) What does annoy me is when on forums (not so bad on this one) people use 'txt spk'. It irit8s me! I mean ffs wtf gal! (lo...erm...l...I think!?!?!) ;) MTheo 04-02-2006, 17:19 I don't mind it too much (but the 'prolly' thing winds me up - seen it on quite a few posts and just stop reading) What does annoy me is when on forums (not so bad on this one) people use 'txt spk'. I use it to humour someone really, when they say something and I don't want them to think I'm not there, but I don't really know what to say so I just say 'lol' :P Or as ppn says - when I'm smiling at something or find it amusing (even in the slightest!) pattricia 04-02-2006, 21:12 Thought it was a blokes name. It's the equivalent of smiling and nodding when you don't quite know what to say. I find it very useful along with "Oh." Don_Kiddick 05-02-2006, 07:57 I thought it meant Lungs of Leather & was used to harrass smokers :hihi: bensonhedges 05-02-2006, 08:23 The one that really iritates me (and there are a couple of culprits on here) is typing "teh" when they mean "the". Don't know if it's some kind of computernerd speak or what....? youwhatref 05-02-2006, 08:24 I think it's needed Spyro. The problem over the net is that when face to face you know when somone is joking or spreading humour through the tone of their voice but over the net there's none of that. Therefore some of what people type can be taken as either being nasty or humourous. Don't know if it's some kind of computernerd speak or what....? It's more a case of typing too fast. Pauly 05-02-2006, 09:05 It's more a case of typing too fast. But it IS also part of the computer nerd speak. You'll get them typing 'teh' instead of 'the', 'pwned' instead of 'owned' (as in I owned you or you're owned!), pron instead of porn etc etc etc. The only thing I hate worse than that is '1337' (elite) speak. It drives me crazy. Thank christ I can't actually do it myself. Waits for the 1337 speakers to give a demonstration and send me into insanity. I've come across the pron thing, but I thought it was more a case of avoiding the spambot thingies. I've never heard of 'teh' instead of 'the'; how very odd. I really thought it was typing too fast or a mild case of dyslexsia. These Linux people, they're far too strange for their own good... Pauly 05-02-2006, 09:38 Try this online store (http://www.thinkgeek.com) for some really geeky toys. The nerds love this site. ;) Some of the things they sell are cool though. EdnaKrabappe 05-02-2006, 09:39 I prefer lol. But a better question is; How do you pronounce it? I say it as one word lol- as in lolling about but some people I've found pronounce it L O L. I find 'hehe' a bit dirty old man, it is the equivalent of a muttley type of real life laugh. As a complete generalisation (before the backlash starts) I find when i've met people who use hehe, they tend to be the sort of people who laugh at the end of their own sentences whether they are funny or not. Whereas lol people tend to be the sort of people who just keep most amusement inside and laugh at appropriate parts of the conversation which is much more attractive. :) I prefer the PMSL to the ROFL if something is v funny although I' ve no idea why but i assure you it is nothing to do with Tenna lady items!
