EVENT OPEN FOR SFBC MEMBERS ONLY

Sheffield Forum Badminton Club will be holding a poker social on the evening of Sunday, November 20th at the Queen's Head. The start time for beginners (including those who don't know what poker is, let alone how to play it) will be 5pm. Those with a little more experience are invited to arrive for 6pm. Please sign-up beforehand because it will make the organization easier. We are also, at least in theory, limited in terms of spaces - we cannot accomodate anything like the normal Tuesday night badminton hordes - so priority will be given to those who sign up early.

Beginners' Hour (5-6pm)
Rob will give an explanation of the game and give you a chance to develop a little familiarity with it by playing a few hands in the company of your fellow beginners. After that there is the chance to put everything into practice by playing in the tournament.

Tournament (6-10.30pm ... at the latest)
Right, lets see who's the best or at least the luckiest poker player. You're assigned to a 'table' with four or five other players. Each player starts with the same sized 'stack' of chips but that will not last long as the hands play out. Use your skill to accumulate chips but if you're unlucky and you lose all your chips then you will get one chance to reload with another starting stack. Now you're up against it, lose this second stack of chips and you're out of the tournament. Elimination by elimination, the competitors will drop away and the 'table's will re-form so that you are facing new opponents. Play until one person has all the chips ... we have a winner. No entry fee, its just for fun and bragging rights.

What to expect ... a few details
The form of poker will be no limit, Texas hold'em - the most commonly played form of poker. The 'reload your stack once' facility will last one hour. To keep things fair, players who do not make use of it will get their second starting stack at the end of that hour. Because of this and the form of the tournament, most players will be eliminated in the second hour (ie between 7 and 8). Most of the players who are left at 8pm will be eliminated in the third hour and so forth. No more than a few will last until ten. Once you are out, you are welcome to watch or otherwise take advantage of the Queen's Head's facilities. The rules followed will approximate those used by casinos but with one small exception: ROB'S DECISION WILL BE FINAL.

One final thought: the G-Casino on Queens Road has a similar offering which they call the 'Poker Experience' for which they charge 15 pounds per person. The cost of our poker social will be ... whatever you choose to spend at the bar.

Please direct any queries you have to Rob (forum username: Aardwolf).

Just as a note - if you have enough people, and tables that are big enough, the game is far more fun when you have 8, 9 or 10 on a table ;)

It also tends to level out the field a little, otherwise you will find the best player on a table taking everyone elses chips very quickly.

Are you planning on doing this again? Is there a buy in? Prizes for winners?
