I quite agree.

By the way, I don't want to sound patronising, but it's better to put something in the title of the thread which refers to the subject, so that people know if it'll interest them before they look at it. Thus: "What do you think of the cleanliness of our streets?", rather than "Hi Sheffielder's!!"

I'm not being snooty - just trying to help because I can see you're new.

And the streets are indeed a mess.

Hi jonathan, i think the city centre is quite good considering the amount of people around but on some of the primary routes in to town it is really bad, mostly around the fastfood outlets.
I'm always amazed at the amount of people throwing stuff out of car windows.
I hope i don't sound patronising mate but good post, nice to know you're thinking of environmental issues.
There is a bridge over the parkway where the road beneath is almost white with discarded chewing gum, gum is a difficult and expensive problem to tackle.

yes, i think its disgusting, people littering their own country, town even! they could at least throw rubbish in their own bin, the streets are not theirs for rubbish! do the city a favour in disposing of your rubbish!

yes, but sometimes a fine isnt enough, they just keep dropping, and sometimes they get away with it, well, alot of the time, ive never seen one person being fined

Ah, but just because you haven't seen anyone being fined for littering, doesn't mean that such fines haven't been issued.

I agree with your points about littering. I think that there should be litter wardens, just like there are traffic wardens, but instead of being armed with a notepad and a book of tickets, they should have flame throwers or rocket launchers. Every time some numptie drops litter on the floor, the warden should give him (or her) a blast with the flame thrower or send a rocket in their direction. Problem sorted; simple and effective ;) .

its far cleaner than leeds in my opinion. a few months ago

i saw a feature on calendar or look north saying that sheffield spent more money on cleaning the streets/getting rid of wrecked cars etc than any other local authority in yorkshire and treating it as though it was something to be ashamed of....i would have thought it was something to be proud of

haha, good point, then we wouldnt have dirty streets like we do now, people would be burning infront of our very eyes, we would see the end of THE DUDE'S lol, it would be a cool society, lol, meh, anyways, keep posting people of sheffield

yes, i agree Fordanglia, sheffield is supposed to be the green-est city here, but it sure doesn't look like it, i mean, we have streetforce, and still rubbish gets knocked about

Perhaps the best way would be to be more visible, anti litter squads who can issue on the spot fines might be one way.
Emagine having to stand there while someone asks for ID and issues a ticket, people looking on would know what you'd done, it might make some people think twice about how they dispose of litter.
Also publish a list of those caught in local papers to remind people litter squads are active.
they'd need to recruit a lot of people for this though and as always it costs.

I Absolutely Agree with you 40Summat, that way, if people do drop litter, then they'll think twice, and the people around them will too, keep posting people on this delicate matter

i agree with the money costs too, but like president bush, blair seems more keen on sending soldiers to war, and that would cost more than enough, enough to keep england tidy!

Would be good if we had more to be proud of in the city's streets! People may be less likely to drop litter. More careful planning, plants and flowers, public art. It makes a difference even if you don't conciously notice it. I like how they've got those lights on posts going between the library and winter gardens, like a winter alternative to hanging baskets. Not much greenery gets past a Yorkshire winter!

Jonathan_C

i agree, i love the winter gardens due summertime, it really makes sheffield attractive, its just too bad people do things such as drop litter.

Disagree. Those who drop litter would continue to drop litter. They could be wandering around the gardens of Chatsworth House, or somewhere similarly beautiful, and litter would still be dropped.

I like the idea of careful lighting and flower displays, but IMO you have to be careful with public works of arts. People's tastes vary, so art works in prominent positions might not go down too well (see the rusting 'Iron Man' in Birmingham city centre). I can hear the cries of 'Council wasting taxpayers' money' already...

Jonathan_C
04-02-2006, 13:17
yes, that "Iron Man" wasn't very good, i didn't like it myself, but thats just my opinion

That's exactly my point. I didn't like it either, but I'm sure there were others who loved it. Flower displays are pretty innocuous, so they're a safer bet to brighten up the city than public works of art.

By the way, Jonathan_C, if you're 13, shouldn't you be writing in text-language, and appending every sentence with 'innit' ? ;)

ppn, boooooooooo, that childish comment was because you're being so pessimistic about people.

I always find it amusing when people suggest that artworks are a waste of taxpayers money, usually the artist and or arts consultant has to jump through hoops to get anywhere and it will all go through a tender process. More public money is wasted in other ways, in other areas, out of site of the public, where taste is nothing to do with it.

If the public were asked about what kind of artwork they would like and be involved in the creative process, do you think they would be happier with it?

Whatever you do isn't going to be to everyone's taste. Which is why I suggested a combination of artworks and flowers, lights and in general greater care in planning and designing public areas.

Which particular comment was childish?

If you read my post carefully, you'll notice that I didn't suggest that public works of art are a waste of the tax payers' money, I simply suggested that some residents of Sheffield (or other cities) might offer this opinion. Whatever the Council do, in matters of public displays of art or indeed most other matters, someone, somewhere will accuse them of wasting money.

As for public works of art, or any other ideas for brightening up the city, I do believe that the public would be very happy to be involved in the process by which such ideas are selected. Taste in art is subjective. Many examples of public art are controversial and may be disliked by a fair percentage of a city's population. As such, my own opinion is that it is perhaps better to please the greatest possible number of Sheffield folk, and that this is more likely to be acheived by contention-free displays of flowers.

The biggest culprits are schoolchildren,at Worrall they troop down from Bradfield School at dinnertime buy buns etc from the only shop in the village sit on a wall, eat and then chuck the packaging on the footpaths then proceed back to school. Why don't the litter wardens target these kids and get a few fines dished out.

I don't think sheffield is too bad on the whole, although you sometimes seem to get binges of litter in some of the student areas. I realised how clean sheffield street were when I went to London recently and there just seemd to be litter and dog poo all over the pavements :gag:

I think its awful. What makes it worse, when the motorised road sweeper comes round it cant get to the pavement/gutter on our road as there are too many parked cars. Mine is one of them sometimes, but last time when I saw it coming I moved mine and lo and behold as soon as I'd done it a bimbo in a red cabriolet parked in front of my house, so I didnt get my bit swept. I went along later with a couple of carriers and picked up a lot of the rubbish. But there are always discarded cans and crisp packets.

Also the grate near our house is blocked with debris, but when the grate unblocker / washer vehicle came, once again someone was parked over it. There is a shop round the corner and a take away and chip shop but no bin, so I suppose if there was a bin it might be better.

Whilst driving through Upwell Street yesterday tea time, I noticed they had dropped the yellow pages directory outside peoples front door, but also someone or something had ripped loads of them up, pages and pages of them littered the street and blown all the way to IMO carwash and beyond... Now I've heard the phrase Yellow Pages do the walking... in this case Yellow Pages do the littering.

i really hate living in a littered society, ever wondered why you're mad outside sometimes? its like when you have a messy room, i being one to have this lol, it makes you angry, same it did me, so i had to tidy my room, and if people round sheffield get angry too like that state, then why not clean up you're rubbish!?!?!?!!!??? Exactly My Point
