View Full Version : Where to go/what to do Sunday
squidge00 03-02-2006, 13:17 Me and my fiance want to do something nice, out of the house, together this weekend.
I am learning to drive at the moment so the idea is that i will drive us to our chosen destination...
Trouble is, we can't think of anywhere to go. It's a bit cold to go walking, and we are a bit skint to be stopping off for sunday lunch. However, we do like visiting gardens, stately homes, art galleries etc..
Anybody got any suggestions? I don't want to end up stuck at home catching up on paperwork cos we haven't made a decision :help:

matt1889 03-02-2006, 13:41 I would recommend Thorsby Market or clunmber Park......
Forget the cold....just wrap up warm???
Drive the countryside way over the moors to Holmfirth then get yourself a hot chocolate or Sunday lunch or both.
Have a look at the Yorkshire Water website for walks around the reservoirs that are near a good pub for lunch.

Where abouts are they?
EmilyJane 03-02-2006, 15:43 I like Sherwood Forest, you can have a little stroll to the Major Oak, then there is a craft area and a few small shops to look at, the drive is nice and easy too. Good roads and a decent distance but not too far IYSWIM.

I was going to say does anyone still go to Clumber Park these days for a run out. It used to be a favourite of mine when I was still playing the field.
Flask of soup or coffee, sandwiches etc., walk down Limetree Avenue.....lovely. There did used to be a cafe there too though.
oohh enjoy.:)
Yellowrose 03-02-2006, 15:56 Its a long time since Ive been to Clumber, too. Must take the grandbabies!
Little_Alex 03-02-2006, 16:04 Where abouts are they? Clumber park is where the A57 meets the A1 near Worksop. Thoresby market (hall) is near Ollerton not too far away from the park ;)
Sheff's cooking Chicken - - - - Could be free booze too - - - if you don't mind boring stories. Make sure you car is taxed and insured-tested - they report them round here as having been dumped!
Get out to Hathersage or Grindleford, a nice scenic drive and loads of places to eat fantastic food (even a couple of shops!).

I used to go to Clumber with my parents as a kid in the early 60's - in fact there'd often be a small convoy cars from our village on a Sunday in summer - three or four from our street plus a couple of aunties / uncles and my cousins.
I've been taking my kids (now 10 & 15) 3 or 4 times a year since the youngest was in his pushchair - play cricket and football, walk round the lake, drive and paddle through the ford, ice cream watching the cricket- all the things I used to do as a kid.
Wonderful place.
This is where I'm going tomorrow;

Been every year for the last 8 years - really cheers us up to see winter on it's way out.
I'm so glad to hear that it's still a good "run out". I too used to love it as a kid and haven't been for 40 years or so.
Enjoy and hope the sun comes out for you. It might just feel a little warmer.

grandmother who used to be a teenager has fond memories of an open top MG and Clumber Park:)

Graves Park is Sheffield's largest park and provides some excellent walks. You can be in thick woodland one minute, open fileds the next. And to quote the above, the animal park is a must see! The cafe was also refurbished last year, so you can stop off for some refreshment, or perhaps something to warm you up at this time of the year. The park is a good example of what makes Sheffield so wonderful. When you're in Graves Park, you might not think that you were 15 minutes from the UK's fourth largest City.
