View Full Version : Nando's - your opinions. Crazy Daisy 23-03-2004, 16:12 Looking for somewhere to go Saturday Night, just wondering if anyone has been to Nando's on West Street? If so, what are your opinions? mr craig 23-03-2004, 20:07 I know a couple of people who have been (not been myself tho :(). The service aint suppose to be great,i think you have to get your own drinks, but the food is suppose to be pretty good,as long as you like spicey stuff.:wow: Leviathan 23-03-2004, 20:15 I went to the Nando's in Manchester (printworks) and it was very nice. Regarding the drinks - you can pay a little extra for soft drinks (such as coke) and get unlimited refills. If you want a refill you simply go up and do it yourself. It's no bother, since its very good value. The food was nice (spicy chicken) and the atmosphere was very nice, although the one of West Street is a lot smaller by the looks of it. scatterheart 23-03-2004, 21:14 We went there last month for a last day of term thing, 15 of us all together, it was about 12pm so wasn't too busy, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. You get a table then they explain how the menu works, then you go up to the desk and order what you want and pay for it there. If you're having a soft drink they give you a glass and there's a self serve thing, where you can go to and get free refills as you need them. You don't have to have the food spicy, you can pick a different level of sauce or none at all, just plain. It ranges from Lemon and Herb to Extra Hot. The food was really lovely and not expensive for an eat in meal. I had the chicken in pitta with lemon and herb sauce and chips and it was gorgeous! Baldyshef 23-03-2004, 23:24 I was there this weekend. We went down for lunch so it was relatively busy..About 3/4 of the tables were occupied. The service was very good. The guy took us to our tables and asked if we'd been before, then explained how the system worked. Very nice indeed. Place is very nice, very clean..Atmosphere is good. Ill definately be going again :) Originally posted by sarah_81 I had the chicken in pitta with lemon and herb sauce and chips and it was gorgeous! Me too...the chicken in pitta was great. wibbles 17-06-2004, 11:33 I went there yesterday for something to eat and it was shocking. It is basically a glorified McDonalds. Is it supposed to be Portugese because out of the oven chips and chicken kebab I had I didn't taste anything remotely Portugese. It wouldn't have been too bad if my meal came to about £4 but £20 for 2 people considering the quality of food and service is shocking. I had nothing I couldn't get at a McDonalds for a third of the price. I would avoid this place at all costs Emilychee 17-06-2004, 12:09 The food it nice and the staff are friendly but I think its a bit off a rip off for the amount of food you actually get Tony 17-06-2004, 12:48 I've always thought that it was outrageously cheap to be honest. £12 for a quick chicken dinner with soft drinks for 2 ain't at all bad! wibbles 17-06-2004, 14:20 I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not but I'll comment nevertheless just in case. £12 for a chicken dinner?? I can get a McChicken Sandwich meal for about £4 which is as good a quality as what I got in Nando's. And just what is so Portugese about a chicken sandwich and chips?? Tony 17-06-2004, 14:30 I'm not being sarcastic at all. On 2 occasions I've had a 2 seasoned 1/4 chickens, chips, coleslaw, 2 refillable soft drinks, condiments, etc for £12(ish). Whilst not exactly the greatest quality, it was all quite edible and certainly about the best value that I can remember having in Sheffield. I assume that you're not seriously comparing Nando's real chicken to McDonalds and all that is holy in mechanically reclaimed meat gristle and offal with rusk and additives laced with life enhancing preservatives (well it enhances the freezer life if not yours)? McDonalds, a sort of Sunny Delight for single parents on a Sunday afternoon ;). As for being Portuguese, well the firm is actually South African, and surely you must have realised it's just a theme, a bit of fun based around a Portuguese legend (read the walls or menu), an excuse to be different to all the others on the High Street... just like McDonalds pretends to be representative of American culture. What would you suggest a chicken restaurant should look like? A Barn? niko007 17-06-2004, 14:40 Nandos is excellent Its cheap cheerful and the food is excellent , top notch service and how do you compare it too maccy d, at least the chicken in nandos is breast and not ground up feet beaks and eyes wibbles 17-06-2004, 14:46 How does the interior of a McDonalds reflect American culture..plastic seats and tables?? Like a cafe???... Excellent food?? Its pitta bread, oven chips and fair enough real chicken breast but thats where it ends. To be fair the food itself was nice for what it was but it is not worth the price it actually is niko007 17-06-2004, 14:54 well dont go for the chicken in pitta then go for something else on the menu then its not pitta bread oven chips and real chicken breast and how can your compare chips to the little strips of soggy potato paste you find in maccy d's next youll be telling me you prefer SUBWAY and dont even get me started on that waste of a shop Andy C 18-06-2004, 12:07 I know a guy who is working and living in London, and he is from South Africa, but was originally Portugese. He was born in Portuagal but moved to South Africa when he was fairly young. Apparantly there is quite a Portugese community in South Africa. Anyway to get to the point he absolutely loves Nandos! (last time he came up to Sheffield our Nandos hadn't yet opened though). I assume what is Portugese about the Chicken is the way it is spiced or something. horseface 24-06-2004, 09:38 I've lurked for a while, but this is my first posting. Until a couple of years ago I lived in Kingston upon Thames. Nandos have been open there for 9/10 years. Three years ago my son worked part-time for that branch Kingston , whilst he was at school, and really enjoyed it. It was his first job, and they were really nice to him. The reason he left (or so he says) was that he couldn't handle both the staff late-night partying and getting up for school next day. They are a very very good employer of people, he got excellent training and a decent wage, as well as free meals! For what its worth: the chicken was sourced from Irish suppliers, with serious quality control. ... and yes, Nandos originates in Republic of South Africa, and the Portugese influence comes in part from RSA having a border with the Portugese ex-colony of Mozambique. Personally I like the chain; the food is OK+, the atmosphere is friendly and easy-going, the booze is drinkable, ... and, in Kingston, they got heavily involved in the local community, sponsoring and providing food to community events. ... and 've already eaten on 3 occasions in the Sheffield shop. smelly 24-06-2004, 09:58 If you're REALLY lucky, you might get some chicken to go with your bones.. tinkerbell 28-07-2004, 10:53 On the topic of value for money you can't really beat the noodle bar on london road - 3.5o for a huge plate of noodles and meat. Not very good if you are veggie I'm afraid. I had nandos in SA - rather strange undercooked chips. Am wary! JohnCC 31-07-2004, 15:04 Interestingly they don't have any nando's in portugal... .wonder what they'd think of it? They have been there since 1999 [click the link to Portugal on following page]: http://www.nandos.com/worldwide/ Tony 01-08-2004, 08:02 Hey... don't get worked up about it! ;) Nando's is just a theme - just like Walkabout (Australia) or Los Iguanas (Mexican) or McDonalds (rubbish) Anyway, Nando's is a South African company. Jamie 01-08-2004, 08:30 I've been to Nandos on west street twice now. Completely enjoyed myself both times. The food is very nice (quality is much much better than Mc D's) and you can choose your own level of spice. The staff are friendly and look quite happy to be working there. I like the think where you do your own refill on soft drinks. Who cares about the theme or where it comes from !? It's fun and the food is YUM. dylan_61 04-08-2004, 15:43 Waste of money. Slammer on Ecclesall Road is fantastic Tony 05-08-2004, 06:24 Originally posted by dylan_61 Waste of money. Slammer on Ecclesall Road is fantastic Apples and oranges. :loopy: Anyway, Slammers has closed down. However, watch that space, now that the owner has got rid of the fancy-dan chef that was killing the business, she is reopening very soon!!! MisterB 05-08-2004, 06:52 Went there lase week and I suppose its ok but no better than average. If you want to spend £20 for 2 on a meal there are better places to go in town. A hot BBQ chicken from safeway & some oven chips are just about as tasty!! wibbles 06-08-2004, 10:29 Originally posted by MisterB Went there lase week and I suppose its ok but no better than average. I'm not a fan and personally think its overpriced for what you actually get..but each to their own. Funnily enough I happened to see one of the staff throwing out McCains oven chip boxes. deelightful3 28-04-2005, 16:09 as anybody dined at this place,my daughter is wanting to go on saturday nite, could you tell me what it is like? slh73 28-04-2005, 16:16 Its decent, just dont expect anything special. Youve basically got a choice of chicken, chicken or chicken, with chips, corn or rice, and 3 or 4 different strength marnades for it, depending on how spicy you like it. Its cheap, and the foods decent and well cooked. tslogf74 28-04-2005, 18:17 Terrible service, decent food. Good if you like it hot (which I do). Kristian 28-04-2005, 18:22 Mod Note: Threads Merged. Please search before starting a new topic. Thanks. deelightful3 28-04-2005, 18:54 sorry did search but didnt put an apostrophe in nando's so it didnt come up with anything. Hook 29-04-2005, 12:27 I love Nando's :) We've been quite a few times, and it's always cheap and cheerful. The food is ok, and isn't too expensive. I don't understand how you can call the service terrible, it's just different. If you wanted to be waited on, rather than order at the till and fill up your own drinks, then the solution is pretty simple, don't eat at Nando's. It's a different system, and it's a different type of service and it doesn't make it terrible! Kewpies 29-04-2005, 14:22 I have been to Nandos a few time and thought it was quite nice, but I went in November and was so ill afterwards!! Even thinking about Nandos now makes me feel a bit sick :gag: fox20thc 16-06-2008, 22:18 Never been before and last friday a friend convinced me to go. It seemed to me like a spicy chicken version of MacDonalds. No table service, no sign of a vegetable unless you ordered it on the side and the prices were pants. (not that I was paying) Am I wrong? Tooeg 16-06-2008, 23:03 I went to the new one on Attercliffe. Layout and decor very good, enough staff to do table service, but they stick to their corporate template, of ordering at the bar. Not much choice, either spicy chicken or spicier chicken. I prefer Chiquitos. Alastair 16-06-2008, 23:19 Nandos are crap like most big chains. It's better to go to an individually run place. sTaGeWaLkEr 16-06-2008, 23:22 Mod note: Threads merged. theripsaw 17-06-2008, 11:24 Nandos are crap like most big chains. It's better to go to an individually run place. Where can you get peri peri chicken to eat in done to your preferred 'spicyness'. Youre just a chain knocker! If you like spicy bbq'd chicken, you'll like Nandos's chicken, simple as.. Alastair 17-06-2008, 11:32 The only one I ever ate in was in Luanda, and it was crap. Bago 17-06-2008, 11:33 It's okay for what it is. What I don't like is when the cook burns the chicken. Maybe they don't see it as a skill, but it is the main selling point! Plus it is the spicy sauce which sells the place as well. It's cheap and cheerful, and one step up than McD for a proper sit down dinner rather than fast food. I swear they have changed their sauces... I don't think Nandos is about service, but definitely one of those fast turnaround place which is really well located on West Street. teddie 17-06-2008, 19:20 They have been there since 1999 [click the link to Portugal on following page]: http://www.nandos.com/worldwide/ I can't find portugal on that link Craig Holmes 17-06-2008, 19:58 Nando's is still good, I love being able to leave the moment I finish eating and not have to wait for everyone to sort out who owes what and then worry about how much to tip. HOWEVER me and the girlfriend used to be able to have a meal platter and know we would have enough of their extremely nice chips to share, these days the chips portions aren't piled as high as they used to be! Chelle01 17-06-2008, 21:15 I've been to afew Nando's around the country as my OH loves the place, but then he has an asbestos mouth. I am not a fan, last time we went to West St. I was served the wrong order of chicken, far too spicy for me and also chips which I didn't order. It wasn't as if they were busy. |
