The Unreturning Army
The story of Derbyshire Dales folk during the Great War - like Horace Johnson from Youlgrave, one of the unsung private soldiers, who lived through the disastrous Gallipoli campaign. He told his tale years later when his family encouraged him to write it down.
The players will also present the story of Vera Brittain from Buxton, who went to France as a volunteer nurse. The letters she exchanged with her fiancé Roland Leighton at the Front vividly describe their feelings and their doubts about the war.
Vera was the mother of SDP founder Shirley Williams
The performance weaves original material from the Derbyshire Times and local parish magazines with the poems of Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen and others to give a glimpse of life in the Peak District villages during the Great War.
