Just after the second world war there used to be lorries running around all over Sheffield bearing the name Jimmy Childs. If I remember correctly he was a demolition contractor who pulled down quite a lot of the bombed buildings. When I come back to Sheffield I don’t see them, so presumably he went out of business or sold out to another company. Did anyone work for him? And is he still alive?

Think the company was still on the go in the mid 70's. ISTR he had a land-fill site at the Grimesthorpe end of Wincobank Hill and kept some wagons in a yard on Owlet Street (bottom of Wensley Street).

Thanks for the info. Jimmy worked hard during the post-war period and made a good job of what he was doing. Sorry to hear he’s gone, but not surprised that his son went bust. It’s something that happens frequently but not to me — I hope!

Greybeard _ nice to hear from you again. What’s all this about a ‘landfill’ site? In our age the name for it was rubbish tip. You’ve be going on about environmental health inspectors next, instead of what they really are which is public health inspectors. Incidentally, posters on this site have talked me into buying Henderson’s Relish, which is a product I’d long forgotten about. Tried it with a steak and beer pie last night. Tried it this morning with cheese on toast and trying it again, this minute, with fish, chips and mushy peas! Off to bed then!

The last I hered of Jimmy Childs was that he was living in Bradway, he used to go in the Bradway pub quite a lot. But that was back in the early seventies.
