I never went from school, it must have been about 1978 the one and only time I went to the Birdcage. Did they have fake palm trees around the place ?

also rememer if you caught the train someone would pull the communication cord halfway between elsecar and chap, then you would be stuck for an hour until the transport police arrived.

I went to Ecclesfield Secondary Modern School on High Street. The headmaster was Mr Brooke. Neville Chatterton was a teacher there. I left in July 1957.

I recall once going to the birdcage about the same time, we pulled up outside only to be greeted by a near riot going on. so we went back into hoyland and went in the gate, and guess what.......they were fighting in there as well, bit like a wild west town:hihi::hihi:

and ours one of the unruliest classes in the school too:o

could do with more like him these days

A cabbie picks up a Nun.
She gets into the cab, and notices that the VERY handsome
cab driver won't stop staring at her.
She asks him why he is staring.
He replies, 'I have a question to ask but I don't want to
offend you.'
She answers, 'My son, you cannot offend me.. When you're
as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you
get to see and hear just about everything. I'm sure that
there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find
offensive.'
'Well, I've always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me.'

She responds, 'Well, let's see what we can do about that:

1, you have to be single and

2, you must be Catholic.'

The cab driver is very excited and says,

'Yes, I'm single and Catholic!'

'OK' the nun says. 'Pull into the next alley.'

The nun fulfils his fantasy, with a kiss that would
make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts
crying.

'My dear child,' says the nun, 'why are you crying?'

'Forgive me but I've sinned. I lied and I must confess,
I'm married and I'm Jewish.'

The nun says, 'That's OK.

My name is Kevin and I'm going to a fancy dress party.'

I was at the school until 1979 .
Liked Mrs Cooper , who taught history and Mr O'Neil who took us for Sociology .
I think Mr Jennings took us for German . Nasty teacher who hit you on top of your head with chalk and his fingers .
I still have my school tie . Up to 1989 I still had the school under wear with my name sticker in the bottom of box until my 1st wife helped them disappear !

We actually spent most of the first two years in the school on Ecclesfield High St (Ecclesfield Junior?) which was being used as an annexe for Echo Grammar while the main school was was being renovated. They built the Science Block in 1963 if I remember correctly.
We used to get called 'Grammar Grubs' by the Colley Secondary Modern pupils, they didn't like us very much. :D
I did actually call in the school a few years ago but it was closed for holidays.
I went up the drive to the old building and got this horrible feeling that I was being watched by some ghostly spectre from my past. Silly I know but I got out of there real quick

I had the same feeling and was there the same time as you. who are you?

You only have to look at the headmaster HERE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/viking99/forums/spaz.jpg)

I was always in trouble for not wearing the school uniform. We were very poor and just couldn't afford one. Mr Harrison was very understanding and used to give me used clothes. My biggest embarrasment was having to wear my stepfathers shirt dyed red (Churchill house I think) for rugby. It rained heavily and all the red dye came out. Terrible times.

hi njabulo, joanne was one of my sisters freinds at school. next time i speak to her i will ask if she has any idea what became of joanne. my sisters name was susan ward.

It was all a long time ago and I do not remember your sisters name . I was known as Lerko as the English people could not pronounce my name , Nkululeko . My first name is actually Njabulo .

Apparently , he got the name as a result of the registration of his car many ions ago b4 I even entered the school . It had OGY somewhere in the registration ! He took part in the 2nd world war and some students placed a swastika on his office door once . Apparently he was reduced to tears .

it's true that ogy got his name from his car ,
I didn't Know he did German but they only just started teaching it when I was in 3rd form I think about 1960 .... he was there alongside "Hitler Ellis " they made a right pair .

Gabby Hayes was one of the best teachers ...very strict ..brilliant mathematician did you know he was at Bletchley Park in the war ...code breaker ..Top secret stuff only came to light after the 30 year embargo was lifted .

and yes , he taught me Binary

Besides my time at university , I think my time at school was the best part of my life . There were racist cretins at the school , but I was able to cope with them as having come from South Africa as a political refugee , I was able to focus on the need to get an education .

I was at the main school between 1979 and 1982 and 1982 and 1984 (sixth form). I remember the school being out of control, with only a handful of teachers (such as Mr Williams & Mr Howarth) who could keep control. Many of the windows had been put through, and room 5 had been completely torched. How I got out of that place with any qualifications is one of life's little mysteries. Grew up quick. I see that Mr King has been killed in a motorcycle accident - I heard that he had been sacked for making a girl stand on a desk, and lift her skirt up. I always felt sorry for him, because he got all the idiots, and it must have eventually got to him. Anyone remember Philip (Percy) Claxton? He was a great teacher for 6th form, but couldn't control the other classes. Same with Mr Pilling. Mr Guest was my form tutor for 2 years, and was new into teaching in 1979. Apparently, he had played football for England under 21s. I was one of the computer swots (still am!), and was one of the first 6 pupils to be introduced to the school computer by Mr Burkinshaw and Mr Carter in 1980. Ground breaking stuff! I still do a lot of web and flickr stuff under the name wakefieldpinball. Please see my other posting on the lower school. My initials are MRD, but I like to keep things anonymous on the internet if that is OK. Ta. Oh, nearly forgot Mrs Jolly, the inappropriately named dinner bag (sorry, lady).
How was room 5 torched may I ask :O?

Talking about cars reminded me we shoved a spud up some teachers exhaust pipe(an old type minibus if I remmember rightly , straight exhaust pipe and we used a brush handle to get it right up inside ) on our last day of term in '63 ...can't remember who's car it was now but he was a right old sod of a teacher , Car wouldn't start so at least he must have been late home !!

Could it have been Philip Claxton?

philip ( percy ) claxton did have a sports car because we once bunged up the door locks with chewing gum after he banned us from the chess club.

I asked Steve Guest about this the other week. He was going to a golf tournament with Roy Judge / Oggy Jennett / Big Dan and others recently and asked him to make enquiries, but no-one had heard anything. The only one he knew about recently was Mr Moss the sports teacher who died in January. RIP.

PS Jennett won the golf!!

Certainly do.

Talking of Lower School form teachers, what became of Lynne Franklin (English, sports and of course drama productions)? She suffered with MS and I remember she had a bout that had her on sticks.

great to see all these names being remembered makes you wonder where all the nickname come from . some are obvious others obscure lots have been discussed but I have never found out why Mr Clay (deputy head in the 60's ) was known as RIMP, or Miss Cross (girls Head mistress in the 60's ) was GIMMA they just were to us then .Mr Jennings was quickly called Cheshire due to his permanent stupid grin when he became head in '59. oggy because of his car (see above) Gabby , because of the cowboy Gabby Hayes others ..............

still on the subject of nicknames i was looking through some staff photo's earlier and came across one from 1967. The teachers name was granville "ticker" mitchell, and he taught physics. A bit before my time ,as i started in 69 and i didnt do physics. does anyone remember how the nickname "ticker" came about.

Went to Burncross cemetery last year as my great grandad is buried there and his gravestone has a golden trumpet on it as he was bandleader of Chapeltown Silver Prize Band and on way back to car we were having look at other headstones when I came upon the grave of Miss Cross. I was at Ecco when she was there, I remember Jennings, Gabby Hayes, Mr Birkby, Mr Cochrane, Miss Webster (Science) and my form teacher was Mrs Palmer. There was also art teacher Mr Sant

[QUOTE=ttourtell;5201725]I was at the school from 1953 to 1958. Had a PE/Hockey teacher - Joan Shutt.

Just found this post - sorry it's taken so long. Joan Shutt, although she taught hockey as well, was the geography teacher.
She left Sheffield in 1966 and taught in Buckinghamshire and on Teesside. Retired in 1987 and had many good years with her husband, Albert. She died in January 2009, aged 82.

Someone earlier mentioned Miss Cross. I didn't go to Ecclesfield myself, (I was at Abbeydale) but Mum asked her to help me with French lessons. I was very fond of her, as was Mum. We went to tea with her once and I remember her beautiful garden, full of lilies.

Ryehills .....Know it well .

when we were at school , sorry to say we made Miss Cross's life hell trying to teach us French .Fortunately we only had her for a few stand in lessons when our regular teacher was absent . She wore a hearing aid that used to howl and whistle and we all knew her as "Gimma " don't know where that came from , before our time in the early 60's ..our regular teacher in 1963 was "Hitler Ellis " and we didn't mess him arround or else ..

The Miss Cross I remember (1962-1966) when I went there didn't teach French - that was Mr Cochrane, Mr Birkby was head of lower school and taught geography, my form teacher Mrs Palmer taught English, science teacher was Miss Webster, Isaac Sant (art), Gabby Hayes (maths) and Head was Arnold Henry Jennings

I went to Burncoss cemetery last year to visit grave of my great grandad after my cousin started looking up family history and we were just walking back to car and I glanced down and saw Miss Cross' gravestone
