susiepoosie 01-02-2006, 08:23 PM Hillsborough is fab apart from one weeny little thing, there are no lovely coffee shops to chill out in and enjoy the papers on a sunday (or any other day for that matter). Wouldn't it be great if we could have a Fob or Moco type coffee shop!! Any cafe owners out there listen up cos you'd make a bomb. :hihi: :hihi: What do other Hillsborough residents think?
SimonS 01-02-2006, 08:31 PM There is one. It's at the Hillsborough corner tram stop opposite the Deep End. I think it's called Juicy Lucy's.
Please don't let Starbucks read this and open one!!!..
susiepoosie 01-02-2006, 08:37 PM Have been in and although it's an improvement on the many others its quite characterless. Was thinking somewhere like Fob rather than Starbucks but fed up of having to treck into town when I want to meet friends for coffee and a muffin pig out!
hotphil 01-02-2006, 09:03 PM I thought one of the boraded-up premises on the actual corner was destined to be a coffee shop? Looks like it didn't happen. Perhaps someone will see the demand and buy it up....
Or shall we stick with the caff in the precinct?
What I want in Hillsborough is a cafe that doesn't mind if you just nip in for the loo without you feeling obliged to get a drink and consequently needing the loo again.
Since they closed the ones on the corner near the Deep End (where Mr Tse's is now) there's only the grotty loos in the Co Op now which is a bit crap, especially when you're bursting for a pee as I often am after a quick sojournt round Hillsborough.
hotphil 01-02-2006, 09:31 PM It's not the private businessman's role to provide public conveniences. However, I think the KFC, McDonald's, Morrisons and possibly even B+Q have loos you can get away with nipping in and out of. And there's the 10p "cabbies favourite" loo on Holme Lane.
susiepoosie 01-02-2006, 10:00 PM One of the boarded up premises would be great, can't believe such a prime spot hasn't been developed. As for the caf in the shopping centre......I'd rather chew me own legs off :o
fox20thc 01-02-2006, 10:05 PM The old pub on the corner that used to house Oxfam and the like has been bought by a company, they have had planning for ages (I think) but seem not to want to do anything with it. I asked the planning officer about it but she says they can't force them to do anything for ages.
hotphil 01-02-2006, 10:11 PM "acquired by hario's - opening summer 2005" proclaimed the poster if I recall correctly.
susiepoosie 01-02-2006, 10:14 PM Think that's such a shame as it's a real eyesore and it's one of the first things you see as you come into Hillsborough, not a great advertisment! If I had the cash I'd buy one of the vacant corner buildings and have a fab coffee cum book shop with huge comfy sofas but alas I am just a poor wee gal :(

We were poor when we opened our first catering business but if you have a vision you can do it. I think it is a good opportunity by the way.

But.. you do have ambition and a great idea ;)
Anything is possible you just have to find the solution

I suffer from mobility difficulties so that 10p cubicle on the end of Taplin Rd is no use to me, as I find the door too heavy to open to get in and out of it.
As for Morrisson's and B & Q, who in the hell wants to walk all the way up there for a wee?! And you have to go past the tills in McDonalds and KFC to get to the toilets, so you end up feeling obliged to buy something.

There are WCs inside the bus/tram interchange shop. Not sure about mobility access but I would guess pretty good.
Bilge 02-02-2006, 01:16 PM Yes, let's have a quality 'destination' coffee shop. Jalucy isn't quite right so people go elsewhere for that kind of thing. Hillsborough corner really needs something nice to kick it all off - coffee shop/bookshop would be great. I think we had a thread saying this about a year ago. But the city centre's only just getting this kind of thing now. So come on entrepreneurs - get cracking in S6.
senwar 02-02-2006, 04:16 PM I've been toying with the idea for a while of looking into opening a coffee/internet cafe in Hillsborough area.
Do people feel there is a niche for this market?
susiepoosie 02-02-2006, 04:50 PM Yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please open a lovely coffee shop and I'll buy my body weight in muffins

Yes, I'd use it. There is so much potential in Hillsborough - money being spent on houses in the area, so obviously money about, but apart from a couple of ok shops - people tram in to town to spend! Nice home made cakes and muffins too please, and some decent papers to browse through!
susiepoosie 02-02-2006, 11:58 PM I second Macbeth ;)
feargal 04-02-2006, 10:38 AM Oooh yes! Maybe some nice little soups and sarnies for lunch as well. And cakes - of course.
SimonS 04-02-2006, 12:45 PM Whatever happened to going down the pub? :(
Greybeard 04-02-2006, 09:35 PM Whatever happened to going down the pub? :(
You mean the Blue Ball where all the sophisticates go ? Don't think they sell muffins :hihi:

This was an interesting thread about the plans for it - maybe a little outdated but I'm not so sure any plans have changed since then...

Carmine 20-02-2006, 02:57 PM Jalucy's better than most, but does anybody else think that the service is a bit poor for the price you're paying in there?
feargal 20-02-2006, 03:11 PM Never been in Carmine - it always looks too empty (not just empty of customers). Could do with some artwork, nice big bookcases, etc!

There's usually a little in the way of artwork on the walls, the usual kind of viciously expensive stuff by a local artist that looks a bit naff.
They need more sofas and a bit of atmosphere in there...and bookcases wouldn't go amiss either, the place is so spartan.
Bilge 20-11-2007, 08:29 PM What do people think about Jalucy now it's bedded in then?
I think it's pretty good. Still nowhere else to get a proper coffee in Hillsbro. People keep moaning about the area but this is a good addition that seems to be doing OK. Well done them.
What time's it open in the mornings - does it get the commuters getting the tram into town and Meadowhall?
jomarch 21-11-2007, 07:04 PM Jalucy's- there's no ambience and the service is slow- seemed more like a place for a quick coffee while you wait for a bus than somewhere to meet friends and relax.
I've always dreamed of owning a coffee/book shop down Hillsborough- so who's up for pooling resources?
fox20thc 21-11-2007, 09:31 PM the business is now up for sale
discodown 21-11-2007, 09:34 PM Wouldn't it be phenomenol to go somewhere for a coffee that baked their own muffins and stuff on site, fresh, daily? We're considering this very thing...
fox20thc 21-11-2007, 09:38 PM buy jalucys!
jomarch 21-11-2007, 09:42 PM How much is it?
fox20thc 21-11-2007, 09:45 PM linky (http://www.businessesforsale.com/telegraphbusinessclub/Coffee-Shop-with-30-Covers-For-Sale.aspx)
Asking price:£85,000
Sales revenue:£2,000
Lease terms:TENURE: Leasehold ORIGINAL LENGTH: 25 years. REMAINING: 23 years REVIEW EVERY: 5 years RENT: £833 per calendar month RATES: £3,783.90 per annum
feargal 22-11-2007, 10:47 AM £2k seems very low! I'd definitely go in more if it had a bit more "oomph". Fresh muffins and stuff would be excellent too... along with stuff to take away. Mmmm.
MuddyFox 18-03-2008, 11:49 AM Asking price now £78k for quick sale (personal not business reasons) - come on someone, this has so much potential! Who suggested pooling resources? A community-run coffee shop? Excellent idea.
BIG ERN 18-03-2008, 11:19 PM Was just gonna say thet Leases in the hilsborough corner area are a premium i'm afraid you'd have to sell a lot of coffee and muffins to make any kind of profit.
Carborundum 18-03-2008, 11:53 PM Hillsborough having a coffee shop? ? <Muffled giggles and rolls about on the floor roaring with laughter>
Rainbelle 21-03-2008, 01:42 AM sounds great to me. Cosy quality coffee-bookshop would be fab. Could even do bistro evenings, bit of jazz, that kind of thing
pattricia 21-03-2008, 01:51 AM sounds great to me. Cosy quality coffee-bookshop would be fab. Could even do bistro evenings, bit of jazz, that kind of thing
I doubt if they would get the custom. Would be nice though.:)

Sounds good, but its just a bit too far to walk from Hillsborough!
jomarch 14-04-2008, 07:56 AM Yes, Walkley and Hillsborough are not the same- has an opportunity been missed here, or is Walkley cheaper than Hillsborough for businesses?
