View Full Version : Id like to discuss beauty
NatalieSheff 31-01-2006, 14:02 who decides who's pretty and who's not? We're told that britney and buffy etc are beautiful but are they really? who says? do pretty people get a rough deal growing up? Are they not taken seriously, or do they get ahead?
If you looked completely different but had the same personality, would you have the same life?

Alot of it is 'decided' by the media and such like.
There was an interesting documentary I saw awhile ago where a scientist had mathematically defined beauty as being a ratio (1.61 or something)
Basically its something to do with proportions of each part of the face and indeed the body.
Not sure if anyone else watched it.
Z
I saw that documentary too. Very interesting.
A lot of scientists argue that on a subconscious level we are all programmed to look for a suitable mate. So men look for women with rounded hips and breasts, full lips and big eyes, as these are signs of youth and fertility. Women look for men with broad shoulders and chiszelled jaws, because these are a sign of strength and dominance.
In reality though, I think attraction is one of the most complex things on earth, and the things that attract humans to one another vary widely.
Some people may fit all the stereotypes of 'good looking', but not have an ounce of sex appeal, while others may not be conventionally physically attractive, but have an x-factor that makes them incredibly sexy.
Go figure! Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.
slimsid2000 31-01-2006, 14:26 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say and I believe this to be true. What one person finds attractive is not the same as wehat another person does.
A symmetrical face (eyes in line with each other) is supposed to be good: a sign of good genes or something.
Analysis in one TV programme found that the single most important thing women look for is height and for men it is waist/hip ratio. ;)
...Are they not taken seriously, or do they get ahead?...
There's a psychological concept called the 'Halo Effect', where people who are perceived to be attractive are also thought to have other positive attributes. For example, they're perceived as being less clumsy, more intelligent etc. It can be a burden, but it's something I've learned to live with... ;) .
RoyalRegular 31-01-2006, 15:14 Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder!

this gets me thinking about leagues (weve discussed b4 on another thread) does one only find attractive someone of ur "league" or above?

True, I guess that explains the 'first impression' scenario, but alot of other factors also kick in (personality, overall appearance, mannerisms, accents etc etc)
stars_gazing 31-01-2006, 15:27 Hmmmm... I am sure that there are people who are universally beautiful. People whose beauty *no* one can deny... Or is that naive of me to say?
hotornot tends to be good at deciding unless people lie of course ;)

Got a pal who is a Woodwork Teacher, he shows the kids how to make a "very" small fire rubbing 2 sticks together. A 45 minute lesson is dragged out by showing them how to use a bucket of sand to put it out. :)
The Fire Brigade and Health and Safety also attend the classes. :)
How we managed in Chemistry classes in the 1950s handling Concentrated Sulphuric, Nitric and Hydrochloric Acid in stoppered bottles, I don't know.:) No goggles, protective coats, gloves supplied either.
I bet they daren't do that now :D
kirky_s2 31-01-2006, 20:53 I think media talk aload of rubbish no celeb is pretty/good looking cos most of it is air brush and all that rubbish but i think everyone is pretty even if there disgustingly ugly because putting people down or media making out anorexic celebs look fabulous just kills people ......point made
NatalieSheff 01-02-2006, 17:01 have to say i think bejounce or however u spell it, is beautiful, but without the makeup its scary.
Swan_Vesta 01-02-2006, 18:14 I think beauty, like many things, is subjective to the individual concerned. For instance, I this that the actress Emma Thompson is a grade A stunner in Much Ado About Nothing - Our lass thinks I'm a grade A mentalist.
Classical beauty is harder to pin down, I imagine that any point in history has had it's holy grail of women: Bottecelli's "fat bottomed girls" Da Vinci's Mona lisa, right up to the sixties where lasses like Marylin Monroe (who in fact was a larger lass compare to some of these stick thin girls of today) were considered to be the height of beauty. It all boils down to this: If she floats your boat then go for it :D
I think beauty can be seen in different ways...
Some people may see it in a face whereas others may see it in a personality...
A smile lights up a persons face this can show pure external beauty... whereas the friendliness kindness & understanding etc... of a personality can be seen as an inner Beauty...
Were all beautiful in are own right...
NatalieSheff 03-02-2006, 15:07 yes i agree, if you smile it makes u ten times prettier. some people r so miserable!:D
Like Bank Balance...for some people:)
ah the most important factor! :P
Being pretty does help, a lot!!!
I dont have to queue when I go to clubs in town, I can just walk upto the bouncers and get in and usually free :)
If im on a date then I like to pay my way.. But on nights out if drunken idiots want to buy me drinks then im not going to argue! It serves them right for thinking that a girl owes them something lol
xx
If you like the chisel-up-the-nose action watch Nip/Tuck, it's toe-curling (and a bit raunchy too)
OMG that is sooo the best thing on tv!!!
apart from lost obviously :D

Being pretty isn't enough, that's merely window-dressing... Being pretty and intelligent AND modest about both is far more attractive, in my estimation! ;)
