View Full Version : Broadband speed test
neeeeeeeeeek 30-01-2006, 21:28 On the back of the Blueyonder speed increase thread I was wondering what speed my connection is. I was under the impression that Blueyonder had increased the speed all over so it should be a 4Mb connection. I have ran this speed test:-
http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/speedtest500.html
My connection came back with 122.6 K bytes/sec.
A better speed test is this one that you download.
http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/
Test 5 is the UK download speed and that came back as 960 Kb/s
It seems my connection is prety crap!
I thought the BY speed increase for Yorkshire had been put back again?
neeeeeeeeeek 30-01-2006, 21:42 That would explain why it's still crap!
According to the Evenfaster page, theyre currently working on Birmingham, Yorkshire still says 'To be announced', which explains why my upload still wont go above 14kB/s
Test 5 is the UK download speed and that came back as 960 Kb/s
If i remember rightly, my connection is about the same but i am only on a 1Mb connection :?
[EDIT] Just ran the first test and came in at 936Kbps
5119.2 Kbps ... 627.4 K bytes/sec
not bad :)
I can't get Dan's speedtest to work (requires mdac).
Zednet says:
Your line speed:
81600 Kbps
10000 K bytes/sec
Zinger549 31-01-2006, 08:27 381.7 Kbps
46.8 K bytes/sec
On the first test
Thanks for that, now thats why my games are lagging Grrrrr B/Yonder
Silly question - whats the difference between kbps & Kbytes / sec. ?
Ginger_Kitty 01-02-2006, 14:32 24kbps...
in't dialup great
From Znet
37431.2 Kbps
4587.2 K bytes/sec
Seems OK? :)
K.

bits and bytes.
kilo bits per sec / kilo bytes per sec
a byte consists of 8 bits. Or not, it all depends, it seems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte
K.
1.8 megs with Wanadoo using the ZDnet test. I'm paying for 2.0 megs.
1 meg = 1000 K.
1Meg = 1 million bits/sec.
1K (kilobytes) = 1000 bits/sec
(Someone on £10,000 per year is on 10K.)
Just remember you won't get the max all the time. I have a 2Mbps connection but sometimes it's as slow as a 1Mbps, though this was mainly due to the router.
Depends how crowded the network is.
The problem with most of the standard speed test sites is that the test file is too small so you dont get time to establish a proper connection with respect to speed.
Try http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/
Use either the 10 or 100 meg files and see what readings you get (just delete them afterwards)
Also remember that these things can influence your speeds:
Time of day
Distance from the exchange
Harware used (in some cases)
Ratio 20:1, 50:1 etc etc(how many people you share with at the ISP)
If you look at the small print from most, if not all the ISP's they always use the "Up To" line in the speed. This is their way of advertising the best possible speed but unless you live in the exchange you will not get it.

nope, that's different. you can have a slow connection (dial-up) with excellent latency (time taken for data to get here from there). you can have a fast connection - 2mbps, and still have terrible latency.
2mbps = 2,000,000 bits per second = 250,000 bytes per second (8 bits to the byte) = 244.1 kilobytes per second (1024 bytes to the kilobyte)
I get a speed of around the 250 kilobytes a second download at 18:30 on blueyonder 2mbps cable internet service, seems to be functioning as normal.
