I am researching for a BBC radio programme on the Yemeni community and the Sheffield steel industry. Did you, or do you know someone who, came over from the Yemen to Sheffield in the 1950's and 60's to work in the steel industry? What was it like? What sorts of jobs did you do? How did you cope with the change in circumstances? What is it like being a Yemeni or of Yemeni descent in Sheffield today?
Many thanks!

I heard a program of this nature earlier this year on Radio 4.
Was it this one?
SteelyR4 is doing the researcher thing: join, ask a question, sod off again. :D
It'll have been one of those Radio Four programmes that only social workers listen to. A bit like Clare In The Community. :hihi:

While smoking their pipes (with fair trade hashish) donned in hush puppies & corduroy jackets. (With elbow patches).
Male social workers will be the same except with pony tails, goatees & vair vair bad teeth. :hihi:

Contact the W.E.A. in Sheffield & they may be able to help you because they have just published a book about the steel industry. The Kelham Island museum & the central library also have copies of this book,so have I.
