View Full Version : HaHa Bar
karl2784 30-01-2006, 10:08 PM Hi.
just thought i'd post a thread about the HaHa Bar. This is easily one of my fave bars in Sheffield. They do the most gorgeous 'tata wedges, is always lively or quieter in the weekday evenings. and some of the bar stuff are easy on the eye too!! ;)
Any thoughts?
Pipine 30-01-2006, 10:34 PM I really like HaHa's.
I like the decor and sofa's and the skinny chips & yummy sauces... the cookies & cream cocktails are gorgeous (but I can drink them far too quickly).. the staff are friendly. Its a very relaxing place to hang out.
I think its my fav bar in town... I work in the centre of town so its nearest pub for after work drinks... I like the fact that its far enough away from the carnage on west street... even on friday/sat nites its generally really nice and chilled in there, maybe cos its a bit more out of the way.
riot187tns 30-01-2006, 10:38 PM Where is this bar?
Pipine 30-01-2006, 10:41 PM Just off the peace gardens in the centre of town
hotphil 30-01-2006, 10:58 PM I'll have to disagree - on the four or five times I've been in there, the service has only been half-decent at best and the food vastly overpriced for what it is.
It's a pity because the building itself gives a nice atmosphere. I'd go there more often if they could just get the service and prices sorted.
cellarhigh 31-01-2006, 01:58 PM great in summer, one of the very few places you can actually enjoy sitting outside... but to be honest iv found the service a bit dire (especially cocktail making) slow, and the food a bit plain and overpriced. You pay for the atmosphere and decor though and like I say, definitely a summer haunt.
Tessika 01-02-2006, 07:52 PM I used to go in the haha bar every friday before we hit the clubs. loved it in there, the bar staff were absolutly lovely and always had a laugh with us! my favourite bar man left a while ago tho so i dont go as much nowadays... gutted :(
PatzB 01-02-2006, 08:49 PM I have spent many evening after work enjoying a drink in Haha as I always found it to have a great friendly atmosphere but the last couple of times going there for a drink and gossip with friends we have had to shout over the rather loud music.
Has anyone else had this problem or am i just getting to old??? :)

Swan_Vesta 01-02-2006, 08:59 PM HaHa's only really good inthe summer imo, the terrance area is quite good as long as you don't get hoards of plebs milling around spoiling the cafe atmosphere. The service is a bit hit and miss though and they have been known to forget more than one member of our parties food order on occassion.
Other than that none too shady :)
graffy 01-02-2006, 10:03 PM i have to disagree on that one. i don't think the food and service are really good and the choice of bitters is poor..i had the worst full English in there, but as u said, there are one or two cuties behind the bar..;)
nick2 03-02-2006, 10:32 AM All style and no substance.
fozzybronze 03-02-2006, 10:12 PM ..i had the worst full English in there,
Never been in A Little Chef then!
:D
Tartempion 03-02-2006, 10:43 PM I once got a salad there and it had a big piece of plastic in it!
I used to love their warm chocolate brownies with ice cream though. Dunno if they still do them - this was a few years ago.
karl2784 04-02-2006, 02:51 PM They do!! had them on tuesday - gorgeous!!! ;)

sugarnspice 04-02-2006, 02:53 PM I live for their Bailey's Coffee. Yum. *Drools*
thebadger 04-02-2006, 03:31 PM Went in there for the 1st time in a while the other Sat. It was cool apart from the music being too loud.
probedb 04-02-2006, 07:03 PM I quite like it, tho it is a tad expensive. Their egg and chips/fries is just amazing :) Good hot chocolate too.
nick2 05-02-2006, 04:26 PM Their egg and chips/fries is just amazing
How anyone could go out for a meal and pay (probably) £5 for egg and chips is beyond me (unless they are Jack & Vera Duckworth).
karl2784 05-02-2006, 05:54 PM its probably a posh and nicer version of egg and chips, rather than the two quid egg and chips from a greasy spoon cafe! :)

Had a meal there a couple of years back and it was horrible. Luckily it was all expenses paid, so I can't personally complain about the price.. But my (ex) employer did :)
karl2784 05-02-2006, 06:05 PM Its changed! as i remember not been too keen on it a coupla years back. but then again, each to their own! :)

I've not been back since so can't comment on it now, might have to give it a try :)

There must be an awfuf lot of Jack & Vera Duckworth clones in Sheffield then.
Completely not greasy spoon, 3 eggs how you want and either big bowl of french fries or thick chips (I think?).
It's not somewhere I eat very often being on the expensive side.
sham71 06-02-2006, 12:31 AM do they still serve cold chips and then look at you as if you are mad when you ask if you could possibly have some that are hot?
Actually that also happened to me at the Forum the other week.
Is it difficult to serve chips hot?
Maybe it's the cold weather.......
Shiesh 02-09-2006, 07:31 PM We are going here for a meal in a couple of weeks and after reading the above posts am no longer looking forward to it!!!!
To be fair this is an old thread I have revived but.....
Has it improved any???
What dish would you recommend???
What dish would you recommend we avoid???
Thanks in anticipation!!
:)
luckycharm 03-09-2006, 09:34 AM its one of my favourites too, especially in the summer, there's plenty of tables and chairs outside
Colmanspig 04-09-2006, 05:15 PM Good mid week after work summer drink. hard to beat. No bitters or ale which is real let down. food over priced. their break fasts i though where okay , although i didn't go for the full english breakfast. went of scambled egg , with bacon and mushroom it was good.
But no Fcuking brown sauce , to busy peddling their own brown sludge type cuttneys. which are all well and good but not near my breakfast. This is sheffeild not frecking hamstead! Brown sauce not posh enough for you w@nkers!!!.
sorry got a bit carried away . so it alright good for somethings , flawed in many other ways. Also the Air con is like a bloomin wind tunnel at times.
penny_crayon 04-09-2006, 05:27 PM I've had good and bad experiences in HaHa - but at the one in Sheffield they have almost all been bad! The drinks are not cheap, and the bar area is way too small for the size of the place. It can take ages to get a drink even when it looks quite quiet!
The food is sometimes really nice, sometimes really bad, usually not especially warm and always takes AGES. Met my boyfriend there for lunch one day and it took them 50 minutes to bring us our food, despite us asking for it twice and being told it was on the way. I ended up eating alone as my boyfriend had to wolf his and go back to work.
We complained, and were given a voucher for a free meal, but when we went to use it exactly the same thing happened!!
It's a nice bar, but they need to sort out the service and waiting times.
Edit: I have to add i love their potato wedges and red onion chutney, and they serve root vegetable chips - mmmm!
lennyfalcon 04-09-2006, 08:06 PM left workin there after 3 years about a year ago and find the thread here very interesting. when i first started it was all about top service and fresh produce but increasingly became more about the mighty pound! turning over tables faster, taking out hand pulled beer cos it was too much trouble, reducing staff hours to cut costs at the detriment of good service and taking on too many part timers who saw it as an easy job when it needs dedicated and well trained staff. it has become a victim to its own success and a take over by laurel pub company has made it into yet another generic town centre bar with robotic staff who always have to "get a manager" when a little common sense would do. these arent the words of a bitter ex-member of staff by the way, i just think its a shame that a bar that has such a great position and potential does not listen to the people who could help it the most. does anyone know what happened to the guy who dj-ed on fridays by the way?? he played some top records and never failed to play requests (9-to 5 rules after a day at work!!!)
piccolinos thats owned by manchesters 'bar and grill' opens in november too just behind cafe rouge there so itll be interesting how all this competition affects the bar

Let's hope it's a damn sight better than Cafe Rouge - we went in for breakfast a couple of weeks ago - it was absolutely dire!
:gag:
swordfish1 05-09-2006, 08:44 PM I had cause to complain about haha last year. We'd had many good days in there and sat outside, but one day it was very poor. I complained on their website.
I got an email asking for my phone number and the day after got a phonecall from the managing director of the entire chain.
He sent me vouchers which more than covered the cost of that particular day, a money off discount card, entry to their reopening night and also phoned a couple of weeks later to see if I'd had a better experience since.
Couldn't have asked for a better response.
mystie 07-09-2006, 06:05 AM I think it's called Ha ha bar because that's what the owners are saying to each other when you've paid £3.50 a pint. I'll stick to me local ta:cool:
superted666 07-09-2006, 09:56 AM me and friends went there the other day.
It was sunny so we got a seat outside then went inside to order.
We were told to go outside and a waitress is serving that area so we waited.
time passed so we asked another person inside who said nobody is waiting on outside tables - cheers!
Went inside orderd food (pricey) took ages to come and was very poor.
I dont normally like putting down businesses but it was a sad affair!
Unisol 07-09-2006, 10:41 AM Maybe if more people complained (http://www.hahaonline.co.uk/news-intro.asp) things may improve!
carcrash 07-09-2006, 11:22 AM This thread is 18 months old and I'm sure that people have complained, I have and I know several other people who have over the last couple of years and the service and food is still as crap as it ever was.
Unisol 07-09-2006, 11:28 AM We had breakfast there the other week.
The food was good, the service was fantastic (well done, whatever her name was), but after she brought the bill she completely forgot about us so had to go to the bar to pay in the end.
I hate that. When i get the bill, i just wanna pay and GO!!
I wonder why bar/cafe/restaurant staff find it so difficult to provide good service. It's hardly rocket science is it?

Er, wasn't it started in Jan 2006?
Either way, it's still crap, and you are right it hasn't improved in the least in the last couple of years. Maybe they make enough money serving expensive food slowly, and with as few staff as they can get away with that they don't really think they need to improve?
carcrash 07-09-2006, 01:24 PM I've confused this thread with another thread about bad service in bars. Its saying something when you get better service and foodin a wetherspoons pub.

It certainly is, when I was in Wetherspoons swim inn on West street last there was a homeless drunk in there walking around asking people for money. He walked right by the bar and the staff said nothing to him! the one thing about Ha Ha is that at least when you pay through the nose for a pint you won't have to put up with beggars, at least I would hope...

it has gone down hill in the service department over the last few years, the staff there are ****ing rubbish too, they look at you and say nothing sometimes its like hello, get me a beer you dumbass then please charge me the earth for it.
For the record the DJ is now at the roebuck which is getting itself a good little vibe on saturdays now, anyone who moaned about the loud music should go there to complain, thats if you can get out of your comfy chairs and get yer teeth in before it closes:banana:
