" Some amusement on the Sheffield Forum Website as a few of its more curious users have discovered its opposite number in Sheffield, Alabama.

And they've been sending greetings and comments across the water which must give the locals a rather curious impression of what we are like.

"Hey guys we in Sheffield, England would like our courtry back" is one.
A certain Liz and Phil comment: "I say, this is terribly good. One is very impressed to see so many Americans writing such terribly good english. Big up to George?"

What the good people of Sheffield, Alabama (population 9.,652) are making over the messages in Sheffield dialect is anyone's guess. Check it out yourself at www.topix.net/city/sheffield-al "

hey martin !!!!!!!! have you contacted them to ask for a reply ? cause we dont seem to get any :hihi: :hihi:

Journalism is about spotting stories wherever they are and if it's on the Sheffield Forum, why not? I have not been able to find anywhere on the Sheffield Alabama website to contact for a quote. Perhaps you tekkies out there can point me to it. What I suspect is that it is not as interractive as the Blighty version and is simpy one aspect of an America-wide site wqhich operates remotely. But I could be wrong.

And the reason you won't find The Diary on the website is that you have to spend money to read it. If everything in The Star was on the website there would be little point buying the paper, would there?

I just found this thread, and found it hilarious. Having worked for most of my life with Red-Necked Cajuns - Okie's from Musgogee - Coon-Asses and such, and having to listen to their tales of "Who won the War" - - (Have they ever won one on their own?)
I couldn't resist joining in.
I do have some good friends in the little old US of A - - but I have certainly met some of their worst exports.
A Surveyor, who thought 1.5, 1.50, and 1.500 Kilometers were different distances.
A Driller who asked for the location for his next hole, and when told to look at his map, and the location was 1 centimeter south of the line intersection, replied "Im using an 8 inch bit" (100,000 scale map)
And a North Dakota man, I brought to England on a visit, andf asked to be shown a bit of History. I lived in Hastings at the time, but he thought Hastings, Pevensey, Winchelsea, and Rye "Old Harbour" were a Disney film set.
Nothing was more than a thousand years old, according to him.
In the hotel (Queens) in hastings, he asked for a copy of every English language newspaper - - - was upset to recieve about 60.
Should these people be alowed to travel?
Cheers
Sheff

Ironically I think you'll find that main item in "Sheffield Chat" on the Forum today is "Mums Fury Over Garden" which was the headline story in todays Star.

A lot more stories from the Star and Sheffieldtoday make their way on to these boards that Forum stories finding their way into the Star. Most of the "news" on here is frankly, something that nobody would pay to read.

You started a top thread though!

Yes, but there is the instant recourse on the forum , whereas you have to write into the letters page and get past all the dog muck complaints ect. at least the forum means we can choose our news.

But isn't most of the "news" on here of the nature of dog muck complaints (or pot hole complaints).

I'll agree with that - when I want a laugh I'll come to the forum - if I want news I'll get it somewhere else.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion even it is vulgarly expressed and illiterate.
What the Star gives you for 35p (and I know I speak with a vested interest) is a pretty good flavour of what it is going on in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
What a pity some of that is not reflected on the Sheffield Forum. While I enjoy visiting the site the level of debate (with some honourable exceptions), conducted mostly by people who either do not, or cannot spell, is depressing.

You've probably just needlessly alienated a fair few potential readers of 'The Star' there...

You can say that again. BTW, do 'Star' proof readers sort out the writers' grammar too?

Funny, last time I read the star, the spelling and grammar was comparable to that on these pages - but they pay people to do that to their paper

I quite like The Sheffield Telegraph - IIRC, it's much larger, blue font and has more in-depth stories.

Prefer The Daily Telegraph, though - ;)

Well for someone who put's himself forward as a caring and humorous chap in his regular page in the Star. You really let everybody see your true colours.
A very disapointing response

Nope. Whoever did this probably just hates religion. Story here. What is it with some folks from Alabama and setting things on fire?

sierra, after reading your link it seems that who ever did it is not only anti religious but also anti american, what with the flag burning and all,but maybe this was intentional to throw the police of the scent

do you have many problems like this,? bieng anti against something is one thing, but burning down some ones church is quite another, hope they catch them soon, and by what ive read of your justice policies they may end up getting 99 years, with any luck

Not too many problems, depoix. The US federal government has alot of enemies. Not just other countries, there are a few home grown americans who don't like their policies, resent paying taxes etc. It's possible whoever did this was anti-american, but maybe the flag just happened to be where they started the fire, or the flag was used as fuel TO start the fire.

If I were an arsonist though, I'd surely bring my own gasoline and matches. ;)

There was a church that was burned in the town where I live, (the fire didn't get far and no one was injured thankfully) but because it was a Catholic church with a mostly hispanic congregation, people assumed the culprit hated Latinos.

When they caught the guy, after he attacked his father with a hunting knife, it turned out to be a young mexican american man who lived in the neighborhood and had actually been an altar boy in that very church. He was off his meds and according to his brother (his words, not mine) he'd been acting "loco en cabesa" and neighbors said he was 'batsh*t crazy'.

So? Who knows. Maybe more of the story will come out. The Klan has really been de-fanged and is all but dead. Nowadays it's a shell of it's former self, even in the South. The Feds used the court system against them, and just lined up lawsuits, one after the other. Of course, judges found in favor of the plaintiffs (person suing) and they were forced to pay millions in damage awards. Maybe even into the billions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kkk

That is how you destroy someone in America. You take their money away. Most people are powerless or nearly so without it. Money opens doors and greases palms. I'm not proud to admit it, but it's all too true. A smart person from a poor background gets ahead by maximizing their potential to make money. No such thing as noble poverty here.
