Hi,
I'm doing a project at college about the Great Sheffield Flood and Hillsborough Barracks and wondered if anyone could help me out with some information?

Thanks

Theres loads of stuff in the local history section of the library including genuine documents from the time such as coroners reports and parliamentary questions and answers.

There is also an annual Flood walk but I'm not sure who runs it. In the past the Council Ranger service did one.

I did an essay on the flooding a while back for a Uni course and included a number of photos taken at the dam as it looks today

March 1st 1864. If you look around the entrance to the Morrisons at Hillsborough Barracks you can see a level line of where the flood reached up to, there may be one on the Wicker Arches but I am not sure about that.

The Sheffield Flood Claims Archive http://extra.shu.ac.uk/sfca/ is an amazing resource.

two examples
1) a firm lists its lost or damaged stock http://www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/claimDetails.cfm?claim=1-146

2) a householder lists his lost or damaged property http://www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/claimDetails.cfm?claim=1-676

There were 7294 claims

An ancestor of mine was one of them, - living on Green Lane at the time of the flood.

For anyone with SKY tv, just spotted this in this weeks Sheffield Telegraph.

Propellor TV (channel 195 SKY)

"The Forgotten Flood, about the great Sheffield Flood of 1864, gets its first UK tv transmission this weekend".

"Directed by Phil Parkin for Sharrow based VeryMuchSo productions, the 30 minute documentary is being shown on Sunday".

stangely there is no time given for the broadcast.

I believe you can find a carved stone round the corner from the bottom of Spout Lane at Loxley marking the height of the flood there.

Some of my family were killed in the Flood too. Have you been in touch with Karen Lightowler?
