View Full Version : Another poorly child question..
Just had to pick up my pickle early from nursery, Hes running a temp of 39 deg, hes dithery and shakey but his hands are freezing cold.
Hes pottering around the house quite happily, chatting to me ect, but you can tell hes really putting in an effort to do it .
The doctors cant see him untill six tonight, what I would like to know is at what point fever wise should I be running off to A+E as I know 39 is quite high.
I have checked him for rash and there is none, and I have given him some calpol to help the fever.

Just keep him comfortable. The calpol should bring his temperature down, don't wrap him up and let him rest. Chances are its a bug, give him plenty of fluids. If he does get overly warm, put him in a tepid bath to bring down his temperature. Hope he feels better soon, theres nothing worse than a poorly kid.
Honeyplanet,
Try ringing NHS direct, they'll tell you what to do. They may suggest asking your GP to see him immediately, which will give you a bit of leverage with the receptionist to get pickle seen a bit sooner.
Meanwhile, keep it up with the calpol etc.
Get well soon little pickle!
While he's pottering around the house and chatting, he should be fine. The advice above is excellent. Here's (http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/SelfHelpGuide/DisplayGuide.aspx?nodes=6jFTMlC%2bRrA%3d) a link to the NHS Direct section about fever and children. I suspect that the person on the other end of the line on NHS Direct will go through pretty much the same questions. Have a go at this first, then ring NHS Direct if you're still worried or want any other advice before you see the GP this evening. Keep an eye on him for rashes in the mean time. Hope he's better soon.
Thankyou all for the good advise  In the end I took him back to the doctors early as his temp rocketed back up to 40 deg.. apparently theres a lot of parvo(slapped cheek) virus going round at the moment, she has seen several cases over the last week or so.. Although she also said it could be an ear infection as his left ears very inflamed.
Any way have managed to stablise his temp for now.. Poor pickle it's horrid when they are so ill and you feel so helpless.. :(

There is another bug going around at the moment too and is quite virilent. It starts with a temperature and then tiredness, loss of appetite, after that follows stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhea. It tends to linger over a number of days coming and going. I'm quite resilient to bugs but this one got me as well as my husband and two children. My 6 year old suffered the most as he vomited quite violently for two days (only the third time he has been sick since born) and didn't eat for 4 days.
Hope your little pickle perks up! Watch his ear though, if you find brown liquid or similar on his pillow go back to the doctors as it may be perforated. You could try Belladonna for his ear, but seek advice first.
Yes! there are so many different nasty bugs going round at the moment, It's just been one thing after another with the kids, Mr.H.P had the tierd, sicky, runny one a few weeks ago but kept it to himself. And little pickles has only just got over a dose of croup, apparently also viral.. Hoping it's just the time of year, and not a comming trend of crappy bugs that never seem to go away.
cgksheff 30-01-2006, 20:21 We went through it a couple of weeks ago (4 year old).
No vomiting or pooing but high temperatures (39 to 41), loss of appetite, "tummy ache".
At the beginning, tonsils inflamed. GP & Childrens Hospital. Paracetemol(Calpol) and Ibuprofen to keep the temperature under control.
Looked like getting better and we just gave the medicine when the temperature rose, but after 4 days the doc said keep giving it every 4 hours regardless.
By then it had turned into a chest infection needing antibiotics and I got it as well. (brown phlegm and fever needing "horse tablets").
4 days off and then the weekend. She was back to school on the Monday, a little tired but has been OK since.
Don_Kiddick 30-01-2006, 20:23 Brufen syrup is good for reducing temperatures & aches and pains and can be given with calpol - or alternately between calpol doses if preferred.
Hope he gets better soon :)
