jackthedog 22-03-2004, 11:25 Excuse the pedantry, but the thread seems to be about who you admire - not who you like the most.
A few people seem to just be listing their favourite stuff...
Woops posted a reply to another thread and somehow it got here. Tried to delete it, but it wouldn't let me. So I had to write something in this box to replace it.
Sorry!

Well said e-man. I can't ever recall being told that i must repress the fact that i'm bristish. I think people are going over the top a little here. the stories about people not being allowed to fly a st georges cross, if true, are rare cases not the norm. If you want to celebrate being british or english or whatever, feel free, i'm sure you'll be fine.
In reply to lazarus, I wouldn't worry too much about losing your english identity and becoming britsish, as i doubt that any of us can really prove that our family tree has always been rooted in english soil. This country has been very mixed up for a long time. I know for a fact that my family history comes from Ireland and New Zealand. I'm still classed as british though. So i wouldn't get too stressed about your english history while it may not truely be your history.
Erm... what's this got to do with Music?:loopy:
Er, don't ask how I managed to do that Da Bouncer, I haven't got a clue. Was replying to a completely different thread and it ended up here somehow.
noseyrosie 22-03-2004, 19:04 In no particular order:

All of REM, but Michael Stipe because he's so modest, shy and humble even with such phenomonal success.
Flook...Brian Finnegan's tutoring me for a week this summer!!!
Zero 7...missed them last week, but the new album is loooveeellyy, great brass and woodwind arrangements.

3 Robin Trower
4 Jonny Lang
5 Bruce Hornsby or John Cougar Mellencamp (can't make my mind up)
Phanerothyme 22-03-2004, 22:31 1. Frank Zappa - A great man in many senses, both musical, satirical and professional. And not least of all his talent for inspiring true greatness from other leading artists.
2 & 3 .Carl Stalling & Milt Franklyn - An amazing combination of Composer and Conductor of the most insane orchestra ever - the Warner Brothers Cartoon music orchestra.

Joe Satriani - the guy rocks, he takes double handed tapping to the extreme, look at Midnight or Bamboo... amazing! he's inspired me to learn how to tap properly, i WILL master the double handed tapping!
Red Hot Chili Peppers - the bands been through a lot of stuff, especially John Frusciante and Anthony Kiedis, but they keep going and they still are as amazing as their earlier stuff... John Frusciante is such an amazing song writer!
Kirk Hammett - any guy that does 12hrs practise a day with Satriani as his tutor deserves some merit, 12hrs practise a day is VERY intense.

hmm... a 5th person... hmm...
Tom Morello - he takes a guitar, and a limited number of effects pedals and makes some of the most amazingly unique sounding records ever... Tom Morello surely deserves some admiration on how he plays guitar!

StarSparkle 23-02-2005, 12:05 1. The Clash - for so many reasons, I have immense respect and admiration for them. Amongst many other reasons - Fantastic music, attitude, guts, honesty, integrity, total refusal to sell out again and again. The only major band who really 'meant it man' and never sold out. And never will - Joe RIP
2. The Manics - I think I've covered the Manics ad nauseam in threads elsewhere!
3. The Charlatans - admire them completely for keeping going and making great music despite great personal tragedy and setbacks that would have finished most bands.
4. The Smiths - for preventing the 80s being a total musical wasteland
5. New Order - for having the guts and the integrity to change their name after recognising they could no longer be regarded as Joy Division after the death of Ian Curtis. Respect
StarSparkle

Not even heard of Beethoven? Not even the dog in the films? There really should be more culture on American TV. :D
StarSparkle 23-02-2005, 19:15 You've never heard of the Rolling Stones??!!
How is that possible?:suspect:
StarSparkle - even my dear old conservative Dad recognised the Stones when he came across them in the street in Edinburgh 'sometime in the 1960s'!

1. Michael Jackson
2. Tupac Shakur

4. Snoop Dogg
5. Outkast
As for rock: Megadeth and Metallica.
John Coltrane- the greatest, most original Saxophonist of the 20th Century. His "sheets of sound", and modal, exploratory approach on Tenor and Soprano have never, in my view, been equalled.
Brian Eno- he has done more than any other individual to bring avant garde ideas from music and art into the mainstream. His Ambient music, influenced by Satie, La Monte Young etc, is beautiful and works on several levels. You can use it as a field for active listening, or as a sound environment backdrop. He is responsible for 'liberating' two generations of non-musicians.
John McLaughlin- simply the most inventive, technically brilliant guitarist in jazz/world music today. Robert Fripp comes close re rock/experimental material, but Mc Laughlin's solo work, material with Miles Davis, and later with Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti mark him out as the best. He is a rare thing- a 'techi' whose music contains [often astonishing levels of] emotion.
Anton Bruckner- influenced by Wagner, he made some of the biggest, most gorgeous symphonies ever. They are often compared to those of Mahler in terms of grandness. In my view, Bruckner's massive Eighth Symphony is the greatest symphony by any composer, including Bach, Beethoven , Brahms, Mozart and Haydn.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart- he wrote so much that is brilliant. However, the cream of the crop [and quite seriously, candidates for the finest music ever written] are the six String Quartets devoted to Haydn. They are beyond compare in their Chamber Music field, containing such dazzling beauty as to leave the listener staggered. I don't know how any human being can be so brilliant.
Actually, I listen to Basement Jaxx really....
see I can't have only 5!
1.) Tupac
2.) MJ
3.)Dr. Dre
4.)Snoop Dogg
5.) Notorious BIG
6.)Run DMC
7.)Eminem
8.)Metallica
9.)Korn
10.)Godsmack
11.)Aerosmith
12.)Linkin Park
and the list can go on!!
